Many words and phrases have been used to describe 2020: unprecedented, uncertain, unsettled, even volatile. Even today, we continue to witness the impact the COVID-19 pandemic, social and physical distancing, societal unrest, natural disasters, and the economic downturn has had our nation and community, as well as on the students attending the College of Southern Idaho.

The motto for this year is, “Together we soar…” It is hard to think about soaring, when you are simply trying to survive and regain a sense of normalcy. In times of uncertainty and unrest, it can be hard to find the positives. That is, unless, you take a moment to pause and reflect . . .

We have soared with leadership. Earlier this year, we celebrated the many contributions, great careers and leadership legacies of former College of Southern Idaho President Dr. Jeff Fox and Foundation Director Deb Wilson. Both worked to secure the College of Southern Idaho’s reputation of being a world class institution and a place that truly cared about the students.

And just as one administration retired, another was introduced. After an extensive, competitive national search, Dr. Dean Fisher was selected to serve as the fifth president of the College of Southern Idaho and Ms. Brandi Turnipseed was tapped to fill the role of executive director for our Foundation.

We have soared with growth. Enrollment continues to remain strong as the College of Southern Idaho as CSI remains the higher education institution of choice for 7,583 students. Over the last year, the Foundation has been able to provide a total of $2.38 million scholarships and to assist students in their time of need.

While our local economy remains strong and continues to recover, the stock market remains volatile. Through careful and prudent management, the Foundation has able to grow its overall fund balance, which now sits over $41 million. However, the need for scholarships continues to grow. With the rise of enrollment and growing economic challenges, now more than ever, increased scholarship funding is needed to support current and future students at the College of Southern Idaho.

We soar with optimism as we look towards the future knowing that your generosity has made a life-long difference in lives of many. 36 years ago, our Foundation was formed on the pretense that we would help make college an affordable opportunity for those choosing to attend CSI. Our assets exceed $41 million, without your continued and generous support, the extraordinary opportunities student have today would not exist. You are truly making a difference!

On behalf of the College of Southern Idaho Foundation Board of Directors, I say “thank you.” Your confidence and faith in our mission and in the mission of the College of Southern Idaho has helped more than 1,500 students over the past 12-months. Our plan for the future is to continue to protect the assets for which we are trusted and provide opportunities and dreams for those who seek an education at the best junior college in the country.

Thank you for generous support and your desire to help the students of the College of Southern Idaho.

Travis Rothweiler, CSI Foundation President

Travis RothweilerCSI Foundation President

All too often this year, we have heard a single word – unprecedented – used to describe our collective experience. While humans have endured struggles since the beginning of time, the current global pandemic has certainly presented us with a range of challenges that are, indeed, unprecedented in our lifetimes. Our nation, our state, our communities, and our own College of Southern Idaho have been through a lot this year. And, as I write this, we continue to grapple with the challenges of the pandemic in the midst of another spike in infections. Like each of you, I look forward to new therapeutics, a vaccine, and a return to normalcy in the near future.

Despite these challenges, I am so very pleased to report to you that the College of Southern Idaho is doing well. In fact, it might even be said that “together, we are soaring above our challenges.” Contrary to national trends, Fall 2020 enrollment at CSI has increased several percentage points compared to a year ago. Thanks to the collaborative work of our faculty and staff, CSI students are being served in the classroom (where adequate safety precautions can be put in place), in online environments, and in high schools throughout the Magic Valley.

Eagles can only soar when they are buoyed by supporting winds, and what we are able to do as a learning institution is propelled by the support we receive from the College of Southern Idaho Foundation, and from you, the donors who make it happen. Your ongoing support for the Foundation provides the lift and inspiration that our students need to reach the heights to which they aspire. Please know that your support for our students is one of the most powerful ways to create an impact on their lives. Together, the College and Foundation can truly help students soar. During these unprecedented times, I want to genuinely say Thank You! Thank you for your ongoing support of this College, its students, our employees, and for supporting the future of communities we serve.

Best,

Your donations make a significant difference to a CSI Student. When you give the gift of a scholarship, you are not only supporting our students financially but also changing the future for the students and their entire families. The generous donations acknowledged in this report were made between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020. Thank you for making the choice to help our CSI Eagles in the past.

2020 has been a year of change. Our beloved, Deb Wilson retired after 30 dedicated years to the College of Southern Idaho. We are so thankful for her work in growing the CSI Foundation. We are proud to announce Brandi Turnipseed as the new Executive Director. Brandi’s love for the College of Southern Idaho comes unmatched. Brandi is a proud CSI alumna and served as a CSI grant writer before going to Chobani as Of-fice Corporate Communications and Executive Project Manager in 2011. In 2014, Brandi returned to CSI as Executive Director of Workforce Development and Training.

Our new Assistant Director, Reylene Abbott is also a proud CSI alumna. Reylene started out her career as a Communications Specialist at Whit-worth University before working as an international law research assistant for the United Nations. Reylene has spent the last three years as the CSI Foundation Alumni Relations Coordinator. Please join us in congratulat-ing the CSI Foundation new staff members and Deb Wilson on a fantastic career.

Our Bridge to Success Program typically begins each academic year with a summer cohort. This past summer, the program offered its first online cohort, and fourteen of the fifteen students completed the summer semester and are enrolled in fall semester courses. This fall, the Bridge Program offered its first fall semester cohort. Through the efforts of program coor-dinator Rosey Alberdi, we have a cohort of 65 students this fall. Since the program’s launch in the summer of 2016, we have had 75 “Bridgers” graduate from the College.

Student testimonies:

S. Perez says:

The Bridge to Success has become my second family and Rosey has become a sister when you are backed into a corner, she champions for your success! The bridge to success has empowered and guided my success not only financially but by helping build a supportive family in which we grow and enter our majors with confidence.

C. Moon says:

I want to thank you for all you have done for me the last two years. Allow-ing me to be a part of the Bridge program has been fantastic. The finan-cial relief you have provided me has been life changing. It has been great to meet other students in the program that I wouldn’t have had the chance to otherwise.

Helen Jean Bordewick was born in Buhl, Idaho, in 1932 to Emil and Hazel Kruse Bor-dewick. Her parents were former owners of the local newspaper, The Times-News. Helen graduated from Buhl High School as a valedictorian of her class. Her love of education continued throughout her life.

Helen received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in 1954 and her master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1955.

Because of her career, she lived in several major cities. She lived in San Francisco as person-nel director of I. Magnin and Company; in Tampa, Florida, as manager of Mass Brothers; in New York as buyer for Lord & Taylor and Mark Cross and was a personnel director for J.W. Mayes. At one time, she owned her own boutique in Rhineback, New York.

In Buhl, she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority. In addition, she was the librarian of the Buhl Mentor Club, of which her mother had been a founder.

Helen established a scholarship endowment in memory of her mother Hazel Kruse Bor-dewick before her passing. Initially, Helen made provisions in her will to fund the endow-ment with $50,000 and upon probate of her will, half of the residual. She wanted to honor her mother’s love of education and her kindness to those who were less fortunate. Those qualities were also noticeably clear in Helen. This endowment supports our students in the honors program.

Hello my name is Naile Ramirez and my major is criminal justice. My favorite thing about the honors program is that it is not truly based on class, but on ourselves. It helps us become stronger students and gives us many opportunities to expand our knowledge. I hope to gain as many new things as possible so I can keep growing as an individual and I hope to gain new opportunities as I further my education. My future plans after CSI are to transfer to U of I to keep studying and to attend law school. I want to work towards becoming an immigration and criminal defense lawyer. My scholarship means a lot to me. I work hard to receive as many scholarships as I can and I am grateful for all the help I receive.

Joining honors has been the most pivotal decision I’ve made at CSI. Joining the program helped me raise myself to an academic standard that I wouldn’t have reached otherwise. It has helped me feel more accountable and responsible for my education. I love the sense of community that’s found between the students in the program as well as all the doors and opportunities it has opened for me. The additional scholarship money is such a helpful bonus as well. The additional time it takes to be an honors student can take away from time at work, so the extra money makes being in the program more realistic and at-tainable. Being an honors student has also guided me to my next steps in my education. After Fall 2020 I will be transferring to Utah State University to continue my studies in fisheries.

For most of the 20th Century, the only known non-cometary Solar System bodies beyond Neptune were Pluto and its moon Charon (discovered in 1930 and 1978, respectively). The discovery of asteroid (15760) Albion in 1992 spurred searches of the Solar System’s outer reaches, with nearly 3,000 of these distant “Trans-Neptunian Objects” now catalogued.

Their extreme remoteness makes most TNOs appear as tiny specks, even in the largest telescopes. Measuring them requires indirect methods, typically by timing how long a passing TNO blocks out the light of a distant star, a “stellar occultation.”

Since October, 2014, CSI’s Centennial Observatory has observed a total of forty asteroid occultations, mostly by denizens of the Main Belt between Mars’ and Jupiter’s orbits. TNOs are more challenging, because their orbits are less precisely determined, making it difficult to predict exactly where on Earth their fleeting star-shadows will be cast.

On September 9, 2018, Observatory Coordinator Chris Anderson, along with Ken Thomason and Ryan Showers of the Magic Valley Astronomical Society, participated in an international collaboration to measure the size and shape of the TNO (174567) Varda, discovered in 2003. For 62 seconds that night, it blocked the faint light of a star in the constellation of Ophiuchus, despite only a 5.9% chance that the shadow would pass over Twin Falls. Furthermore, smoke from area range fires threatened to dim the target star to invisibility. Four other observers, all in Arizona, also recorded the star’s disappearance, allowing a profile of Varda to be calculated.

This first-ever measurement of Varda’s profile revealed it to be a slightly-flattened (“oblate”) sphere 473±4 miles (746±6 km) across (Fig. 1), and will help refine its orbit for future observations. The principal investigators in this scientific collaboration, Drs. Damya Souami, Felix Braga-Ribas, Bruno Sicardy, and Bruno Morgado, of the Paris Observatory, published the results in the August 12th, 2020 issue of Astronomy & Astrophysics (http://arxiv.org/abs/2008.04818).

Kenda Van HornClass of 2019 • Veterinary TechnicianPresident of the Vet Tech Club • Alumni Student Ambassador

Ever since I was little I knew I wanted to work with animals. With the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) being the closest college that has a Veterinary Technology program, I knew it was the school for me. I packed up and moved to Twin Falls the Fall Semester after I graduated from high school. While at CSI I was given many opportunities to be a leader and to be challenged. The last three semesters of my time at CSI; I was an Alumni Student Ambassador. In my second and final year of college I was the President of the Vet Tech Club. The support I received while at CSI was amazing. My experiences truly helped shape me in ways I couldn’t imagine possible, and I am grateful for the time I had there to grow as a person. CSI has helped me achieve my goals and prepare me for my job. With all the leadership positions I held, I am better able to work with a diverse group of people and figure out the best way to accomplish our goals.

I passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) since graduating from CSI and am now a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT). I mainly work on the Surgery Team at Alpine Animal Hospital. It is so fun helping prep all the patients for surgeries and being able to apply the knowledge I learned while at CSI. Some of the surgeries are Dentals, Orthopedics, Spays/Neuters, C-sections, and Exploratories. I currently have one dog; her name is Delilah. Delilah was rescued from the Vet Tech program while I was in college. She is now a blood donor for my work when she is needed. It brings me joy to know that she can also be a part of my work. I am so lucky to have a job that I love and have a deep rooted passion for in my heart. Thanks to CSI and all the people who supported me through it all!

In 2017, the rodeo community lost a young man that exemplified the cowboy way. The Cole A Hatcher Memorial Fund was set up to honor a rodeo athlete and student at CSI that touched so many lives during his time here. He had earned two degrees at CSI, one in Welding and one in Equine Science all while competing on the CSI rodeo team. While Cole’s awards at the collegiate and

PRCA level were impressive, what was most inspiring about this young man was his ability to encourage his friends. Cole contin-ues to inspire our students at CSI through his memorial fund by providing other rodeo athletes the financial support to live out their dreams unapologetically the way he did.

I have been a student at College of Southern Idaho for three years. When I started college in 2017, I had an uphill battle ahead. I had past mistakes that reflected into my GPA, I was starting college as a serious adult student with a clear academic plan and career goal, and I started with a 0.00 GPA. It was exceptionally daunting. Over the last three years, I implemented a plan and got to work. As a mother and full-time worker, I had my work cut out for me. However, I was not going to let that stop me. I was able to raise my GPA up to a 3.88 & made the President’s list last semester. I had never given much thought to scholarships because, frankly, I never thought I deserved one. I decided that after years of hard work, I might as well try. This summer, I was notified of receiving a College of Southern Idaho Foundation Scholarship from the Johnson fund. I was elated, as a working mom, trying to figure out how to pay for school out of pocket has been a little more than stressful. However, the foundation saw something deserving in rewarding me a scholarship, and it has changed my life. I can attend a full-time schedule without straining myself to pay for it all on my own. Reflecting back, it was the small choices made daily and the sacrifices that were necessary to exceed academically and get me here to this place, where the foundation found me deserving of a scholarship, and I cannot truly express my immense gratitude for this opportunity and chance. I am forever grateful. I work so hard for the grades I have earned; despite the challenges I face. I just want to say, thank you to the Foundation donors at College of Southern Idaho for recognizing and rewarding the years of hard work I have put in. Thank you, just isn’t enough.

In 2004, Orville Johnosn, a local farmer from Hagerman, set up an endowment to honor his late wife Doris. The endowment was created to support health science students at CSI who demonstrate their ability to succeed in their course of study. Over $85,0000 has been disbursed to students since its inception. The Health Science Program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a variety of health care professions. By working toward this degree, students will gain the foundation necessary to transfer and continue their education in such fields as

health promotion, health administration, exercise science, athletic training, dietetics, and public health. Additionally, this program allows students to prepare for study in a multitude of CTE health care programs such as dental assisting, dental hygiene, physical therapy assisting, EMT, registered and practical nursing, paramedic, radiological technology, and surgical technology. Our health science students are so thankful for the opportunity our donors have given them throughout the years and look forward to continuing a tradition of success.

Idaho Power has been a loyal donor and friend since 1986. In 2010, the Idaho Power Environmental Technology Scholarship fund was created to help students majoring in Energy Technology programs.

“We are passionate about powering lives with clean, reliable, affordable energy, while helping others in the communities where we live and work. Idaho Power and our employees are proud to support organizations likes the College of Southern Idaho that are making a difference. Together, we’re working to grow strong communities and prepare our future workforce.”

Lisa Grow

President and Chief Executive Officer, IDACORP, Inc. and Idaho Power

Just a few years after the College of Southern Idaho was established in 1965, the residents in Minidoka and Cassia counties felt the influence of the community college (ideal). By 1978, CSI had an operational presence in Burley. In 1996, the Mini-Cassia Center was expanded due to a Title III Grant as outlined in the Higher Education Act of 1965. That same year, Cassia School District passed a construction bond that directed the district to build a new high school in Burley. Those two factors created the opportunity for CSI to reach an agreement with the school district to purchase most of the buildings of the “Old Burley High School.” By Fall of 1999, CSI was open in the remodeled space and ready to respond to the growing academic and workforce needs of Mini-Cassia.

The Mini-Cassia Center provides access to a wide range of postsecondary learning opportunities. Students can participate in academic, workforce, community enrichment, and early college experiences. The staff and instructors also provide support for Active Aging programs, and College and Career Readiness and English Language learning classes. Through partnerships with a variety of CSI departments, students can earn degrees, complete

apprenticeships, and build critical skills in a range of programs.

The CSI Foundation continues to be a strong source of support for local students in a variety of ways. Through scholarships and Mini-Grants, students and faculty in the Mini-Cassia community benefit from generous donations and endowments. The Foundation team is dedicated to elevating students and their families by responding to the complex needs of the modern college student.

In May 2020, 185 CSI students from Minidoka and Cassia counties applied for graduation. We honor their efforts and examples of resilience. We enjoyed celebrating them as we delivered commencement boxes to their homes and workplaces, and many of the students were excited to stop by the Mini-Cassia Center so we could honor them with mini-commencement ceremonies.

Over the years, we have watched family units prioritize education and reach their goals. We have seen our students engaged in the community, employed in great local jobs, and leaving their own powerful legacy for their posterity.

Hi, my name is Elisa Rodriguez, I am a mother of two beautiful daughters, a wife to a risk taker and a sister to 5 siblings.

My experience at the CSI Mini Cassia Center has been life-changing. I can truly say I have met some incredible people and one professor in particular, Dr. Parker, that I won’t forget! So many have had a big influence in my life, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

If there’s one thing I could share with you, it would be to “Talk.” Get to know your teachers and classmates. You succeed with the more you know!

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” If my contribution to the CSI Foundation can help change the world by helping students reach their educational and professional goals, then I am making a difference to our community and students.

College of Southern Idaho is an integral part of the Magic Valley. CSI provides our community with education, athletics, performing and fine Arts, community outreach, short-term workforce training, and a place for each of us to belong. With the help of the CSI Foundation, students have more opportunities to be successful in their educational pathways.

I am extremely thankful to donate to many causes within the CSI Foundation, but the one which is near and dear to my heart is The Ott Family Scholarship. This scholarship was established to assist two types of educational routes—Business and Nursing. Both professional pathways have been the cornerstone of multiple generations within the Ott Family and it is an honor for me to pave this pathway for students at CSI.

As a CSI employee, I am grateful to see the good the CSI Foundation provides to many of our students. A small contribution to the CSI Foundation can make a difference in a student’s life. I encourage each of you to look at the opportunities available within the CSI Foundation to empower the lives of our students. Which in turn, creates a positive change in the world.

Crystal Ayers, Department Chair,

Business and Economics

In 2004, the CSI Art Department Endowment was created to help students pursue their passion of art. The endowment was originally created by Herman and Jean King. Herman graduated from Stanford with a master’s in business but always had a love for art. In 1915 you could find Herman playing around his father’s well-known variety store,

Kings. The endowment now has over 50 contributors who collectively have given 245 gifts to equal $78.4k. Since its inception, the art department endowment has awarded $86,483.23 in scholarships. The endowment currently rests at $141,710.82.

When I was a young girl, I absolutely loved Art. I loved the variety of forms that it came in. I loved the creativity that was behind it. I especially loved how fun it was to make something beautiful. I was so in love with Art that I was sure I would grow up to become a famous artist. As I got older, I had to deal with many difficult things such as bullying, death, and Depression. Those events made it hard for me to continue with my Art, and I ended up giving up on that dream for many years. However, since attending CSI, I have been given the chance to fall in love with Art all over again. I have had a chance to take a wide range of classes from some of the most passionate teachers I have ever met. I’ve had the chance to meet such a diverse group of students, many of which have been just as passionate about the Visual Arts as me. I have even been able to experience these life-changing moments that have helped me grow, both an artist and a person. Choosing to go to school at CSI has done so much for me, and the people here at CSI have helped me to succeed on this journey. They have believed in me, even when I doubted myself. And they have continued to support me, even when it seems like the world has been falling apart.

I was lucky enough to be a recipient of an art scholarship this year. This honor has really given me the motivation I need to finish my last year at CSI strong. I can focus more on my schoolwork since I don’t have to worry about how I am going to pay for my last few classes. And I have been able to find this new confidence in myself since I know that other people believe that I can do something great. As I finish up my time at CSI, I’m not worried about whether I will be able to make it in the real world, or not. I know that CSI has given me just as good of a chance as any other school. And I couldn’t possibly be any more thankful for all they have done.

Stephanie HudsonExecutive DirectorTwin Falls School District Education FoundationHOPE Women’s Giving Circle member I am Stephanie Hudson, the Executive Director of the Twin Falls School District Education Foundation. I hold a strong passion for education, specifically fostering inclusive opportunities for all young people to receive a quality education. As a leader in this field, I believe that my role is to mitigate and remove barriers that inhibit access to education.

The HOPE Giving Circle struck a chord with me. As a woman who has had a career both the corporate world and in philanthropy, I see the benefit in supporting fellow women to advance their education, I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for my educational opportunities. In addition, as the mother of a pre-teen daughter, I want to show her we can support each other, that education is key to a bright future, and that everyone should have the opportunity to chase their dreams.

Our men’s basketball program has long been renowned as one of the top Junior College Basketball programs in the country. From the late Eddie Sutton and Boyd Grant to Fred Trenkle and the long list of coaches that preceded, there has always been an impressive level of sustained success here at CSI. While the wins and championships are recognized and respected nationally, the members of our Magic Valley community understand the impact that this program has made on countless former and current players lives. Many of these student-athletes were given the golden ticket of a full scholarship to pursue their athletic dreams, and more importantly, build their foundation for life with a college education. These young men have embraced the town of Twin Falls through their hard work on the court, in the classroom and out in the community!

We feel very fortunate to be here at the College of Southern Idaho and competing on the basketball court and in the weight room. There are many colleges around the country that are not

as fortunate to be competing athletically or in the classroom. A huge reason for this luxury is the organized and safe approach that our administration has taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through recommendations from the CDC, Central District Health and Idaho government officials, we have successfully managed to put our kids in a safe position to compete and attend face-to-face classes. A lot of credit must also be given to our student-athletes. As coaches, we have asked them to create a “social bubble” with their peers. We have also stressed to them the importance of staying within this bubble, taking proper sanitization, and distancing measures. If it weren’t for the compliance and awareness of our student-athletes, we would not be in the position we are in!
