Dear Friends in Christ,
Thank you for your prayers and good wishes during my vacation and ImaBridge Africa mission trip in Nigeria. I had a good time with my family and relatives. I am grateful to Fr. Lipinski, Father George, Fr. McKitrick, Fr. Wirth, Deacon Dennis, the Parish Staff and all of you our parishioners who supplied help during my absence. Thank You.
In memory of St. Blaise whose memorial is this Sunday, February 3rd, we will give the blessing of throats at the end of each Mass this weekend. Two unlit candles are blessed, held slightly open, and pressed against the throat as the blessing is said with these words: “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may
God deliver you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil. In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
St. Blaise is the patron saint of throat ailments. From Saint Anthony Messenger Press on Saint of the Day we learn that that Bishop Blaise was born in and lived in Armenia as a hermit in solitude and prayer. Legend holds that one day a group of hunt-ers seeking wild animals for the amphitheater stumbled upon Blaise’s cave. They were first surprised and then frightened see-ing that the bishop was kneeling in prayer. As they took him to prison, a mother came with her young son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At Blaise’s command the child was able to cough up the bone. He was martyred in his episcopal city of Sebastea, Armenia, in 316. The church declared him saint for ailment of the throats. We ask for his intercession for all who are sick.
On Monday to Wednesday of this week, all the priests of the Rockford Diocese will be in Fontana for the winter Clergy Confer-ence. After morning Mass on Monday, Deacon Dennis will help with communion services on Tuesday and Wednesday morn-ing
I hope you are enjoying the bulletin articles on our beautiful stained glass windows. This week’s article is on the next page.

Fr. Godwin

St. Patrick’s Stained Glass Windows
The fourth window on the east side of the church (The Windows of Promise) presents to us King David and the priest of Salem who was the king of peace in Jerusalem. His name was Melkezadek. He is a very interesting per-son in the Old Testament as there is very little known about him, but he offers in response to the kings plead for food, bread and wine to the men. It is a sacrifice that is unique as the Jews in their worship always sacrificed ani-mals and this is the only reference in the Old Testament about anyone offering to God gifts of bread and wine. This becomes a sign and symbol of our own Eucharist. One can see the altar stones, the basket of bread and King Melkezadek holding the cup of wine. The men in the back and on the side are attendants of King David.
The fifth window on the west side of the church (The Windows of Fulfillment) is a portrayal of the Last Supper that took place on the Passover before Jesus died. You can see the upper room where the meal was cele-brated along with (at the bottom of the win-dow) a basin along with a pitcher of water. This is a reminder of the great sign of service that Jesus performed during the ritual meal—the washing of the feet of His disciples. Jesus assumed the role of a servant to remind His followers and all of us that we are called to
service and not to prestige. One can also see on the table, similar gifts of sacrifice as used by Melkezadek—a dish of bread and Jesus is holding the chalice of wine. These are the signs and symbols of our Eucharist that was foretold by Melchezadek and fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus at the Last Supper promised to leave to His followers and Church the Sacra-ment of the Eucharist as the bond of the community and our spiritual nourishment.
In Hebrews 6:4 there is reference to those who have “tasted the heavenly gift,” which is most likely a reference to the Eucharist. Moreover, in Hebrews the priestly “Order of Melchizedek” is mentioned five times in reference to Christ’s Eternal Priesthood. And what did the priest-king Melchizedek offer to God in sacrifice: bread and wine (see Genesis 14:18) and in the same way Jesus, the true High Priest, offered His Body and Blood, under the signs of bread and wine to God the Father. The Eucharist is the fulfilment which is greatly prefigured by the sacrificial offering (promise) of Melchizedek.

On Saturday, January 19th, some of Montini’s middle school students braved the weather and competed in the National Engineers’ Week Future City Competition in Chicago. The competition requires the students to create a project plan, a virtual city, write a research essay, make a scaled model of their city, and give a presentation. It is quite an extensive project which the students worked on for four months including after school sessions once a week.

Vocation Corner
"In our first reading this weekend, God says to the prophet Jeremiah, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…" Immediately upon hearing these words, we realize how special they are to our lives. We understand that God does not just make us ran-domly and hope we can figure out how to be happy on our own. Rather, God makes us all with a plan in mind. He knows us even better than we know ourselves. He under-stands our strengths, our interests, our personalities, and even our weaknesses. It is with all of these things in mind that He created each and every one of us for a specific path in life. When we are discerning our vocations and trying to figure out exactly what that path is for each of us, it is important that we first try to understand ourselves. In other words, we need to try to see ourselves as God sees us so that we can understand the vision that He has for us. It is sometimes easy to believe different lies about our-selves and our vocations: I'm too sinful, I'm not good enough, God doesn't love me, I won't be happy, etc.. All of these are lies that are meant to keep us from the true holiness that God desires for our lives. We must always try to remember that we are all beloved sons and daugh-ters of God the Father and that He loves us infinitely. I encourage you all to courageously open your life to Jesus Christ and ask Him what he has made you for. By doing this we remember that God has known us and loved us always, and that He wants us to be happy even more than we want it ourselves. Before He formed you in the womb He knew you. Open your heart to Him so that He can make you the saint He desires you to be. "

Would you like to make a difference in our community but aren’t sure where to give? Every penny of your donations to St. Vin-cent de Paul through GiveCentral or your
parish Poor Box assists families in need. Your gifts of treasure to SVdP are used to pur-
chase food at a significant discount, which is then given to our needy neighbors. Some funds might be sent directly to a utility company to avoid shut-off of services for someone in need while other funds may pay for gas or a needed car repair to allow one of our neighbors to get to work. Your donations allow our neighbors to feed their families, to live in dignity and to continue to be a productive member of our community. Won’t you consider a donation today? Monetary donations as well as donations of shampoo and conditioner are greatly appreciated. Proverbs 22: “Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.”
Another Thank You Received Thank you for your continued sup-port of our Corporal Works of Mercy Collection that allows us to respond to requests such as these to benefit our brothers and sisters in the McHenry community.
