Page 2 3rd Sunday of Advent Dear Friends in Christ,

As we approach Gaudete (Joy) Sunday, the third in Advent, I write to thank all of you, especially those who participated with our Confirmandi in the just concluded God Is! retreat. The parents, chil-dren, volunteers and I, came out renewed from that spiritual experience. Special kudos to the PRFF Ministry (Parents Raising Families in Faith - of RE, Montini and homeschooled children) and our par-ish staff who worked tirelessly for a successful event. Find pictures to the right.

For the third time in 3 months, we had a great turn out at our First Sunday free pancake breakfast. You may see a few photos to the right and many more on our parish website. We are very grateful to the Knights of Columbus who hosted this month (Bravo – The Knights’ Rock! :-) and to the 5th grade

PRFF families who hosted the fun rosary-making activity for all parish children during breakfast.

On the Third Sunday of Advent known as Gaudete - that is, Joy, the Church asks us to rejoice in anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Emmanuel – that is God dwelling with us. The joy He brings is communal. He invites us to reach out to our brothers and sisters so that through our love and sharing they may also experience that God is with us.

Please think about someone that you could invite to the church, share a smile, love, food, clothing or other temporal blessings. Invite them to share in the Joy of Jesus Christ, the Emmanuel, about to be born for us this Christmas. Happy Gaudete Sunday and Gaudete week.

In Christ,

Fr. Godwin

The parish staff would like to recognize and thank, Greg Freund for his service here at St. Patrick Church in the Mainte-nance role. Greg’s last day with us was December 2nd. We wish him the best of luck. Greg - We will miss you!!!

Please join me in welcoming Kenne Ludwig, Bookkeeper, and John Pitzen, Maintenance, to our parish staff. Both Kenne and John are longtime parishioners of St. Patrick and we are very happy to have them on board. Congratulations to both of you. Welcome!

If you are new to the area or visiting from another parish, welcome to our faith community! Please visit our website www.stpatrickmchenry.org to find out more about St. Patrick parish. Godwin has added a 6:00PM Mass on December 18th the remaining Sunday of Advent. Please take advantage of this additional Mass in order to fulfill your Sunday Mass obligation.

24 Hour Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

time of the year? Please consider committing to spending an hour (same time) with Jesus each week of Advent. Exposition begins at 8:30AM on Tuesday morning and ends at 7:30AM On Wednesday morning. If you can’t commit to every week, perhaps you would consider being a substitute? Dates: 12/13-14 and 12/20-21.

Let us pray for those who have recently died

Rev. Gerard Christianson, Laura Lower (Daughter of Carolyn Her-riges)

As temperatures get cold, a warm place to come home to after work is a blessing, a blessing that some in our community do not have. A young working family of six has been living in their car while struggling to find a low

cost apartment. Being placed on a waiting list for shelter is no consolation when your children are cold. Vincentians helped this young family find additional options in the area as well as provided them with food, gas for their car and vouchers at Salvation Army for clothing. John 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

Word of Life

“A child is loved because he is one’s child: not because he is beautiful, or because he is like this or like that… Not because he thinks as I do, or embodies my dreams. A child is a child: a life generated by us but intended for him, for his good, for the good of the family, of society, of man-kind as a whole.” ~Pope Francis, General Audience, February 11, 2015 ©2015 Libreria Editrice Vaticana. St. Patrick Respect Life Ministry

Stand Up And Be Counted As One Who Defends Life!

After all the Masses next weekend, Decem-ber 17th and 18th members of St. Patrick’s Respect Life Ministry will be collecting signa-

tures for the Annual Right to Life McHenry County Ad in the Northwest Herald. The ad will run in January near the date of the March for Life to bring attention to the 1973 Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal through all nine months of pregnancy! Since that time 58,586,256million* children have lost their lives to abortion.

Please join the hundreds of other participants from all over the county by taking the time to add your name!

*Based on numbers reported by the Guttmacher Institute 1973-2008, application of CDC decline % for 2009, 2010 to last Guttmacher number with projections of 1,120,775 for 2011-13. GI estimates a possible 3 percent under re-porting rate, which is factored in.

St. Patrick Music Ministry

Did you know that our St. Patrick Music Ministry Team is mostly made up of peo-

ple just like you who may not be musically trained but who simply just love to sing? We are in need of parishioners like you who have a heart for singing our Lord’s praises.

Over these last few weeks of Advent we have “Open-Hymn Hour” where you can come to a rehearsal and sing with us to see if you might be interested in joining.

REHEARSALS Adults: Tuesday evenings at 7pm.

Children: Thursday evenings at 6pm. Place: Music Room - lower level of parish center

Beginning in February, we will have “Open-Choir Hour” where you can come join us upstairs in the choir loft when you attend one of the Masses at which the choir is singing (usually the 4pm or the 9am Masses). We will have extra music books available for you, so just walk up to the choir loft when you enter church.

If you play piano or another instrument, consider learning/rehearsing one or two songs to join in along with the choirs. We can provide the music and instruction.

St. Patrick Church Music Ministers make a joyful noise unto the Lord, enhancing our liturgical services. We are, however, in need of new members in order to continue!! Come, we have a place saved for you. Please contact Cecilia Adams, Music Director at [email protected] for more in-formation.

Vocation Corner: People or Things?

As Christmas ap-proaches I tend to get caught up in thinking of people in light of what gifts I’m going to get them. Once I have the perfect gift picked out, bought, and wrapped, when I think about that particular individual that gift will come to mind. This is an unfortunate thing however, because when it’s all said and done, what matters more and what I should be focused on isn’t the gift itself but the relationship that I have with this person that impels me to desire to get them a gift in the first place!

All of us are called each day to imitate Christ as closely as possible. So why shouldn’t we try to emulate how He gave gifts at Christmas? He gave one thing, and it wasn’t anything material at all. He of course gave Him-self, coming down and entering our world for the sake of establishing loving relationships. Each of us when we entered into this world were given a calling and a mission from God. Sometimes we can miss the im-portance of this or even misinterpret what we are called to do because when we look at others we think of them in terms of how they impact us materialistical-ly, what they bring to the table and what we’re ex-pected to bring to the table for them. But what will en-able us to give them what they need most is if we fol-low Christ’s example of being who we are called to be for them. So focus on love, focus on your mission and your vocation, and be grateful for the relationships that you have as you do your shopping this year.

Sacraments

Baptism of Infants or children under 7 years of age:

You must be a registered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism. To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please consider scheduling your child’s Baptism be-fore your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is re-quired for the parents. This class is offered on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.

A Prayer for Advent

Let us open our hearts to receive the grace of this Advent season,

which is Christ himself, whom God our Father has revealed

to the entire world. Where God is born, hope is born. Where God is born, peace is born.

And where peace is born, there is no longer room for hatred and war.

God alone can save us and free us from the many forms of evil and selfishness in our midst.

Let us welcome into our lives God’s mercy, which Jesus Christ has bestowed on us,

so that we in turn can show mercy to our brothers and sisters.

In this way, we will make peace grow! ~Pope Francis
