From the Pastor’s Desk

Take Courage; Get up, He is Calling You (Mk 10:46-52)

The story of Bartimaeus takes place at Jericho a city of trade and of Palm trees. Let me first paraphrase the story of Bartimaeus who was a blind beggar sitting at the roadside. He heard that Jesus was passing by. He uttered a prayer for help, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” He was rebuked by many but he persisted in prayer. Jesus stopped and said, “Call him”. He threw his cloak, re-ceived the gift of sight and followed Jesus on the way.

Bartimaeus “son of honor” had lost his dignity Bartimaeus means a son of Timaeus. The word Timaeus comes from the Greek word tima, which means ‘honor, reverence’. Thus his name means ‘one who is honored, revered.’ Now this “son of honor" is immediately connected with his present miserable condition, for he was sitting in the dust by the roadside, beg-ging. He is aware of the fact that he was not what he supposed to be and for that reason he is struggling to move from the darkness of his life to the bright light of Christ.

The day of his greatest opportunity When he heard that “it was Jesus of Nazareth passing by”, he decided to do something. It was the shortest sermon of seven words that prompted him to ask for His help. This was the day of his greatest opportunity of which he had waited for years. He was determined not to miss this golden opportunity.

The cry of faith for deliverance On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, the blind man began to cry out, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me” (Mk 10:47). The crowds didn’t have any compassion for him, they tried to shut him up, but he was not hindered or both-ered by the opinions of others. He needed something from Jesus and he was determined to get it. When Jesus heard the cry of this beggar, He stopped in the middle of the road and called for Bartimaeus to come to Him. What a glorious moment that must have been for this blind beggar! His faith was honored and he received an audience with the Lord Jesus. The Lord is never too busy to hear your voice We are at different stages of our spiritual journey. Some are still sitting by the roadside, not able to see where they are going. Some are being discouraged by their own culture not to call Jesus for help, other are being encouraged by their friend and the Church community to meet Jesus. Bartimaeus, teaches us to be persistence in prayer, have a strong faith in the healing power of Jesus. He also encourages us to “throw our cloaks behind” and follow him who is the living light. Jesus is passing by! The Lord is never too busy to hear your cry. He is calling YOU Don’t let this opportunity pass by you without meeting your Savior. God bless you,

Fr. John Francis
