MAY 22, 2016 - THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

INVITATIONS:

Tomorrow evening, Monday, May 23 at 6:30PM and again on Tuesday, June 7 at 1PM after the noon Mass, the Building Committee invites your input on plans they have been working on for renovations of the downtown church and gathering space. Hearing from you will be important, so please join us for refreshments after the presentation on Monday, May 23 and before the presentation on June 7.

The Pastoral Council has been working diligently with parish leadership under the guidance of Vicki and Doug Micheau on our new Strategic Plan for 2026. We received your input of over 3,000+ responses and we would like to present to you the fruits of our labors. Doug and Vicki will lead us through the process used to get us to the present plan and gather feedback from Councils and Commission and parishioners at two presentations. These will be the same presentation on di¦erent days at di¦erent times in order to accommodate people’s busy schedules:

• Wednesday, June 8 at 7-9PM and again on

• Saturday, June 11 at 10AM-12pm

Please plan on joining your fellow parishioners as we seek to respond to the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the future of St. Michael Parish.

UPDATE: ST. MIKE’S TIKESBob Colella of the Pastoral Council, Patrick Gillespie of the Finance Council and I have met with parent representatives of St. Mike’s Tikes families and with sta¦ from Catholic Community Services on the issues facing the future of Tikes. At a recent meeting, it became evident that there is misunderstanding on the part of many as to the relationship between Tikes and the parish. I want to clarify. Please share this information with anyone who might ask you.

• Since 1987, St. Mike’s Tikes has been a program of Catholic Community Services (CCS). Here are a few pertinent facts:

• Tikes is NOT a ministry of the parish.

• The parish has NO say in its governance or programs.

• As pastor, I have NO authority with the Tikes other than the Use Agreement for the space they occupy in the Pastoral Center.

• Though a program of CCS, it is NOT a Catholic early learning child care center. Because of federal and state funding, it has to be non-religious.

• Funding for Tikes comes from fees charged to parents and from subsidies given to Tikes by CCS. The operating deficit for this year alone is expected to be around $50,000.

• Tikes occupies over 7,000 sq. ft. of space; it shares the kitchen facilities and parking lots as an indirect subsidy.

• All custodial and maintenance of the Tikes space is paid for by the parish as an indirect subsidy.

• Maintenance of the Tikes bus is supplied by the parish as an indirect subsidy.

• These indirect subsidies (meaning they are not included in the CCS Tikes’ budget) amount to almost $200,000 per year, paid for by our parish.

I hope this assists in understanding a bit of the picture around the issues we are dealing with concerning St. Mike’s Tikes. I will have more information as we continue our discussion. If you have any questions, please ask Bob, Patrick or myself.

In Christ, I love you,

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. In the Catholic Church a solemnity is the highest ranking holy day possible (followed by a feast and a memorial). The Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of our Catholic faith.

As Catholics we acknowledge the Holy Trinity when we arrive in a church, and several times during our liturgies as well as other times. Every time we make the sign of the cross we are expressing our faith in the Trinity and our faith that the Trinity was revealed by Jesus on the Cross. One part of stewardship is knowing our traditions and the meanings behind them.

Making the sign of the Cross should never be an empty gesture. Jesus told us that if we love Him, God will come and dwell within us. More than once St. Paul reminds us that we are “temples of the living God.” God is within each and every one of us. Do we realize that? Do we live out that truth? Today’s feast confronts us to examine ourselves and our lives. As good stewards we need to live with the certainty that the Blessed Trinity is present in us. Then we need to reflect that presence in love for others.

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTHObservable signs that may raise concern about a mental illness include:

Cognition—A person may seem confused or disoriented to person, place or time. A person may have a di°cult time concentrating.

Aect/Mood—A person may appear sad, depressed or overly high-spirited.

Speech—A person may speak too quickly, stutter or experience a sudden onset of slurring (may also be related to a stroke).

Thought—A person may hallucinate (hear voices or see things that others don’t hear or see) or experience delusions (e.g., paranoia).

Appearance—A person may appear disheveled or have poor hygiene.

If these signs are evident and are especially out of the ordinary, it may indicate the onset of symptoms of a mental illness. For more information contact Deacon Ronnie San Nicolas at (360) 250-6626) or the 24-hour Washington Recovery Helpline at (866) 789-1511 for substance related use, mental health and problem gambling issues.

NEXT WEEKEND — CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSIONWe will celebrate the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ this coming Sunday, May 29. It is considered a solemnity — a feast with the highest rank in our liturgical calendar. Proces-sions with the Blessed Sacrament will follow the 10:30 and 11:30AM Masses. Incense will be used.

Join us in a Catholic tradition begun in the 1800’s which expresses our belief in the real presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed in a monstrance (the Lord’s glory is visible to all) and taken outside the church. The liturgy goes out into the streets. A notable Eucharistic procession is that presided over by the Pope each year in Rome, where it begins at the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran and makes its way to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where it concludes with Benediction.

At the Westside, the procession follows the path into the woods and returns in front of the church, where we celebrate Benediction. Downtown, the route will be along Boundary and half way down 10th street into the church garden for benediction, a much shorter walk than in the past.

Pray for good weather that we might walk in the afterglow of Easter Time in the company of the Risen Lord.

DID YOU KNOW?Capital Medical Center Hospital is not a°liated with any religious group. They do, however, provide non-denomi-national Spiritual care. Upon every hospitalization at Capital, Catholic patients should specifically indicate their religious preference, and call the parish o°ce to let us know their needs (Holy Communion, Reconciliation, Anointing of the sick). If unable to call, patients should ask a nurse to make the call for them.

FPU UPDATEOne of the things our students in Financial Peace University learn is how to do a budget and why to do a budget. The word budget conjures up feelings of dread and deprivation in most people, but a budget is really just a spending plan. You decide ahead of time how to direct your money. It is telling your money where to go, instead of wondering where it went. If you want to learn more about living debt free and planning for the future, stay tuned!

We plan on o¦ering the FPU sessions again in the fall. In the meantime, check out Dave Ramsey’s budgeting website. It’s free and easy to set up.

For our students:

That our seniors will be well-prepared for their upcoming finals and the new experiences in their lives.

That our students will have discernment as they consider seeking ASB election.

For our sta:

That Mr Edwards’ recovery will be quick and complete and that sta¦ will continue to be able to carry on his responsibilities during his recovery.

For our benefactors:

In thanksgiving for our benefactors who

have continued their gracious gener-osity in providing scholarships for our students.

For our community:

That voters will vote prayerfully.

For the hearts and integrity of our elected o°cials, as well as those about to be elected; that they may be mindful of their example to our youth.

For our school:

For the timely completion of upcoming renovations, and for the safety of the builders performing the work.
