The Catholic Church and Immigration

The topic of immigration has been in the news as of late and promises to be in the news for the foresee-able future. Many people, including Cardinal George, are speaking out in support of comprehensive im-migration reform. Some have asked if the Catholic Church has the right to speak out on immigration re-form, which is largely a political issue. All public policy issues — abortion, euthanasia, poverty reduction, the death penalty, and immigration reform—have political and moral aspects to them. The Church is well within her rights to speak out on public policy issues of moral consequence and often does. In fact, the Church has a moral obligation to speak out on issues which impact human dignity and human life. In the area of immigration, the Church brings special expertise to the discussion, because we are an immigrant church, we have assisted immi-grants in assimilating into our country for years. Also, immigration reform that could lead to a legaliza-tion program would have a positive impact on many immigrant families who attend Catholic parishes. Catholic concern for migrants and refugees has a strong foundation in Scripture. We read in both the Old and New Testament depictions of Moses and the Jewish people in exile and of the Holy Family as an ex-ample of a refugee family. The parables of Jesus spoke to the obstacle of a hearty welcome (fear of the stranger, prejudice, competition, sense of loss) and also to Jesus’ desire to break through the taboos and restrictions the religious establishment placed on people like tax collectors, sinners, Samaritans and Gen-tiles. Our Scripture teachings call us to deeper compassion for the migrant. Inspired by this call, the Church has developed rich teachings and a custom of concern for immigrants, migrants and refugees. Our Biblical tradition reminds us that when we welcome the stranger, we welcome Christ. We are called to work for the conversations of hearts and minds and in doing so, create a culture and practice of hospital-ity in communities receiving newly arriving migrants. We Catholics in the United States, who live in a land so blessed and have a long tradition steeped in the migrant experience, have a special responsibility to be a welcoming people. In their pastoral letter, “Strangers No Longer: A Journey of Hope,” the Catholic Bishops remind us that the Church must meet the religious and spiritual needs of newly arriving immigrants and refugees and ensure that the sacra-ments and the full life of the Church be made available to all people, regardless of their legal status. Also the Church must help to provide for the material needs of immigrants and their communities. This is why the Bishops call on parishes and other Catholic institutions to develop a network of social services to as-sist them in the immigrant process as they transition to new life in America. Later this month printed and electronic postcards will be made available so that we can let our Senators and Representatives know that we support comprehensive and compassionate immigration reform. On Thursday, May 30th, there will be a pilgrimage from three churches, Old St. Patrick’s, Notre Dame de Chicago, and St. Adalbert’s. People from all over the Archdiocese will walk from these churches to Holy Family Church on Roosevelt Road for a prayer vigil with Cardinal George. Please learn more about how the Church has and is contributing to the public debate on immigration re-form by visiting the Archdiocese of Chicago web site at www.archchicago.org where you can link to www.justiceforimmigrants.org. Peace Father Pat

PRINCIPAL POINTS

2013 Parochial Grade School Band Festival and Clinic On Saturday, April 20th, the St. Mary of the Woods Jr. & Sr. Bands participated in the 2013 Parochial Grade School Band Festival and Clinic held here at St. Mary’s. Unlike traditional band contests where bands warm up, play, get judged, and receive written comments and a trophy – this was in Festival/Clinic format. Our band ar-rived, did a comprehensive warm up, and performed be-fore a clinician. They were recorded and taped, and then received judges’ comments/explanations. They received an ‘excellent’ rating and a beautiful trophy. Then, each band received a 30-minute clinic session where they worked directly with the clinician and received sugges-tions for improving their performance and tips on musi-cal growth and playing skills. Students and parents alike enjoyed this meaningful experience. Our congratulations go to all of our young musicians who proudly repre-sented themselves and our school. Our next event is the annual Spring Concert on May 15th - all are welcome to attend. Mr. Larry Dybis, band director.

Wayne Messmer, known to Chicago Wolves and Cubs fans as Mr. National Anthem, portrays his hero in the one-man play Damien by Aldyth Morris. The play tells the story of Father Damien, whom Pope Benedict XVI canonized on October 11, 2009, who devoted his life and ministry to more than 8,000 lepers on the island of Molokai (1873-1889). Messmer says that the world needs to hear the message of Saint Damien’s life and mission now more than ever.

BRICKED GARDENS OF GRATITUDE REMEMBERING OUR MOTHERS

Candy? Perfume? Flowers? While these are all lovely ways to express your love for your mother on her special day, consider something completely unexpected this year. An engraved brick in her honor for placement in one of our Gardens of Gratitude. Her name, along with a remembrance by her children, will serve as a lasting legacy of her love and devotion for years to come. We are now accepting reservations for the brick gardens that can be found on both the Hiawatha and Sioux sides of our building. Two different sizes of engraved paver bricks are being offered for perma-nent recognition. Due to space limitations, fewer bricks are available on the Hiawatha side so the pricing for that area has been adjusted accordingly. Details are included on the reverse side of this form. This is a wonderful way to honor or memorialize your mother and take part in this historical moment for our Parish community.

Please complete the reverse side and return this form and your payment as soon as possible as the brick garden appeal is being handled

on a first-come, first reserved basis. Yes! I want to buy a Garden of Gratitude brick… Name ______________________________________________________________________________

Congratulations to our First Communicants

On May 4th, 86 wonderful children from our Faith Community received Holy Communion for the very first time. It was impressive to see them prepare themselves for this very special day by doing service for others. I wanted to share some of the wonderful things they did.

Toothbrushes. Father Pat said he needed toothbrushes for the people in Piura, Peru. Well the children set to work having collections. They collected toothbrushes in the Narthex. They collected toothbrushes form Dentists and dental companies. They collected from their various schools. Now we have an abundance of toothbrushes ready to go to Peru.

Food. We told them about New Hope Food Pantry and their need for peanut butter for hungry people. They set to work and collected more than 200 jars of peanut butter and delivered them personally.

Bears. We told them that there were some children at Beacon Therapeutic Day School that didn’t have much and could use a friend. They traveled to Build-A-Bear in Schaumburg and built 16 bears to those less fortu-nate than themselves.

Misericordia. We told them that the leaders of the Misericordia Candy Days collection would need help this past weekend. Hopefully you saw them for yourself in front of Jewel doing something for others.

Easter. We told them that their help would be appreciated in cleaning up after the Easter egg hunt in the Choo-Choo park. They turned up.

We are certainly delighted to see how you stepped forward and made a difference.

God’s blessing on all of you! Mrs. Mahoney and The First Communion Team
