Joy Filled Expectation

The other year I ordered a nice set of noise-cancelling headphones for an upcoming trip. As the order was confirmed online, I was given the option to have the delivery shipped to a locker in downtown Austin where I could then retrieve the headphones. I had a relatively small window of time before leaving on my trip and anxiously read the delivery updates each day. Something unexpected happened: the promised delivery date came and went; the tracking system indicated the headphones were still en route, but no further progress could be noted.

I called the company. They admitted that it looked like the package had gotten lost. Although frustrated, I resigned myself to going on vacation without the new headphones. I would just have to listen to the snoring of my cabin mate on the cruise with ordinary earplugs! I had a nice surprise (and this is where it pays to be kind to the Customer Service rep on the phone): they would overnight a new set of headphones to me at no charge. And, yes, the package arrived before I had to leave on my trip! Same day or next day delivery creates an expectation of quick fulfillment. Our gratitude is often as quickly lived as the delivery time frame.

Nature reminds us of cycles that are somewhat predictable but always variable. One season I still miss from growing up in Pennsylvania is fall. Up north one catches a whiff of coolness in the air (usually at some point in September) and begins wondering when the leaves will change. Mid to late October you begin to notice glimpses of color on certain trees, which often progresses into an explosion of color! Some years it truly amazes; other years the effect is muted. The general trend here, after 29 years in Central Texas, is for a tree or shrub to exhibit brilliant color one day and to be bereft of leaves the next. Better advised to snap that photo on the spot than to return the next day with camera in hand! This year has been different. For three weeks now I have gazed with wonder on the trees lining Brazos after our daily Masses and wondered when the yellow will disappear. It's still there!

In Advent we prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ. Yes, we prepare our welcome for the Christ Child at Christmas. Why shouldn’t this also be a time of preparation for our death? For the Christian, this can create a joy-filled longing to live each day to the fullness of the Father's will, trusting it to be a good and perfect will, and trusting that His Spirit can animate and direct our thoughts, feelings and actions to our final end and perfect good. Look no further than this weekend's readings to confirm that Advent is a both/and experience: joy-filled longing for the Christ Child at Christmas AND a longing for the beatific vision of heaven. In the meantime, we choose how to experience the short-lived longings of same or next day delivery; the achievement of a certain sense of control or otherwise in the day, or better yet, the wonder of a tree in Central Texas that simply will not yet let go of fall color. Best to be amazed at the interruptions of grace that draw us back to our true calling: to live as children of the King in a fallen world that yet awaits its redemption. Let us journey together with thoughtfulness, care, and charity this Advent. Take the time to be interrupted by grace; to wonder, and to listen to the heart of God. Fr. Tim

Dear Parishioners, Advent is a time of anticipation and waiting, and with it, a time of meaningful reflection, accompanied with gratitude for all we have received this year. Through your prayerful support, the school continues to receive many blessings. I am excited to share some recent accomplishments and an opportunity to visit the school. Enrollment has reached 191 students. Our school has welcomed 23 new students this school year. Thanks to your attendance at the annual Fall Festival, we were able to raise over $29,000. Not only was it a financial success, but the fellowship strengthened our communal bond as one Body of Christ. We invite those of you who are considering a Catholic education for your children to the CSSM Open House Sunday, Feb. 3, at 11:30am, in the school library. Join us as we share more about our transition to classical education and provide an opportunity for you to meet our wonderful faculty, as well as our current students and parents. We are grateful for the blessings of your continued support to the school. Blessings, Robert LeGros, M.S.A., Principal

Padre Tim
