Complete Trust in God’s Will, Abandonment to Divine Providence

Those who are familiar with the “Big Book” of AA and the Twelve Steps recognize Step 11: “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.” What has always stood out for me is the last part of the phrase — praying only for knowledge of God’s will. My visceral response is usually, “that is so narrow!” What about my will? My hopes, my dreams? What if God is not attentive to the things I perceive are so important??

The Second Reading of last Wednesday (from the 23rd Week of Ordinary Time) by St. Bernard of Clairvaux addresses this: “The first stage of contemplation, my dear brothers, is constantly to consider what God wants, what is pleasing to him, and what is acceptable in his eyes. . . Once the eye of the soul has been purified by such considerations, we no longer abide within our own spirit in a sense of sorrow, but abide rather in the Spirit of God with great delight. No longer do we consider what is the will of God for us, but rather what it is in itself. For our life is in his will.”

To elaborate on the theme of last week’s Rector’s Corner, “Christ is the Answer,” I continue with the words of St. Bernard: “When we think of ourselves, we are perturbed and filled with a salutary sadness. And when we think of the Lord, we are revived to find consolation in the joy of the Holy Spirit. From the first we derive fear and humility, from the second hope and love.” Backtracking further in time, to the earliest of the Gospel writers, St. Paul, we can rest with confidence in the words of Romans 8:37-39: “No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor power, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

The Lord has not abandoned His Church as we face gut wrenching challenges. This is the time to press deeply in Christ, to be willing to touch His wounds, and to abide. From there we discern right action. Pessimism is neither a Gift nor a Fruit of the Holy Spirit. The Lord calls forth great saints in time of great need. Let us continue to seek only knowledge of God’s will and the power to carry that out. Fr. Tim ___________________________________________________________

Regular offering (First Collection) provides for the daily operations and keeps the Cathedral functioning as your parish. Our weekly budget of $21,500 is the minimum amount needed to meet those expenses and

necessary on a weekly basis.

Restore Renew Rejoice Capital Campaign has been removed, and Donahue Center Improvements added to help provide funds for temporary and long-term improvements. Temporary—to help meet our commitment to the upcoming Fullness of Truth Conference, and long-term—to allow use of this space for future events and parish activities.

Cathedral Improvements will be changed to Cathedral Maintenance in Oct. 2018, to provide a more accurate description for the use of these funds, which is to help pay for the regular upkeep and repairs to the Cathedral.

Future changes will be explained as they occur. If you have questions, contact the Director of Advancement, Louis Barron, at 512-476-6182 ext. 172, or email [email protected].

The Basic Teachings of the Catholic Faith program offers a general introduction to the theological principles found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While some of the courses are primarily for catechists, they are general enough to offer content useful to any Catholic adults who wish to deepen their understanding of the Church’s teachings and in so doing, become better equipped for Christian discipleship and evangelization. Each of the five segments offers 6 Diocesan clock hours of instruction. $50 for all five classes. FREE for Saint Mary Cathedral parishioners who serve, or seek to serve, in Faith Formation ministry. Call the CFF office at 512-476-6182 for more information.

Dear Parishioners,

It is great seeing the many smiling faces during the first weeks of school as our students and families have returned for the 2018-19 school year. This year we welcomed six new staff members: parishioner Teresa Pione, Ana Mooney, Marina Mejia, Mary Ziolkowski, Mary Bowen, and Camille Weishuhn. Please continue to pray for all of our faculty, staff, students, and families.

As you heard last week from Fr. Tim, we are really excited to begin our transition to a classical model. A classical model to education focuses on the true purpose of Catholic education, which is the pursuit of wisdom and virtue, centered on Christ. For centuries, this “classical” purpose and method of education produced the greatest minds, hearts, and saints of our civilization by focusing on analytical thinking, being well-rounded, and developing a moral character based on divine law. Our purpose and mission as a Catholic school is to further God’s kingdom through faith, academics, and service. We are confident that a classical model of education is the best approach to our mission.

If you would like to learn more about, or be part of the vision of Cathedral School, please contact our school office at 512-476-1480. I ask you to pray for the school as we follow God’s call to the true, good and beautiful mission of Catholic education.

Padre Tim

Child Care—Tuesday evenings through June 9,

6:00pm-8:30pm, we will provide childcare for families participating in RCIA each week, in the Pre-K 3 & 4 classrooms (in the Donahue gym, near the cafeteria). Adults (ages 18 and above) with EIM certification are invited to help serve these families. We ask for a commitment of one Tuesday per month, and it’s not neces-sary to commit to the entire time; the more volunteers, the more we can share the ministry.
