¿Qué es lo que más importa en la vida?
La oración de los humildes atraviesa las nubes; no descansa hasta que llega a su meta, ni se retirará hasta que el Altísimo responda, juzgue con justicia y afirme el derecho.... Eclesiástico 35:21-22
La oración es el alma de la vida cristiana. Es la llave que abre todas las puertas espirituales. La oración abre la puerta de nuestros corazones para que Jesús pueda entrar. Escucha, dice Jesús, estoy a la puerta, llamando; si oyes mi voz y abres la puerta, entraré a ti y comeré contigo, y tú conmigo (Apc 3, 20). Por eso, orar siempre sin cansarnos (Lc 18, 1-8), es mantener constantemente las puertas de nuestros corazones abiertas a Dios. Es estar continuamente dispuestos a la gracia de Dios, que a su vez ordena correctamente nuestras actividades diarias, enriquece nuestra vida espiritual y nos ayuda a participar más eficazmente en las liturgias. Si la oración abre nuestros corazones a Dios, entonces, la frecuencia con que oramos determina cuán importante es Dios para nosotros. Nuestra mejor atención y tiempo lo dedicamos a lo que más nos importa. Todos los días hacemos una lista de prioridades. Entonces, ¿dónde están la oración y Dios en tu lista diaria de cosas por hacer? ¿Qué clase de tiempo le das? ¿Dan un tiempo amplio y de calidad a la oración? Si no lo haces, ¿por qué? Sus respuestas a estas preguntas le dirán cuán importante es Dios para usted. Jesús enseña que la oración persistente mueve a Dios porque revela cuánto lo amamos y anhelamos verdaderamente. Este amor genuino y este anhelo interior es a lo que Dios responde rápidamente. En la parábola del juez injusto, Jesús argumenta que si un hombre tan malvado pudiera ser movido por la persistencia de una viuda, ¿no aseguraría Dios los derechos de sus elegidos que le llaman día y noche? (Lc 18,6-7). Invocar a Dios "día y noche" es orar a tiempo y fuera de tiempo, es decir, durante la Cuaresma, el Adviento, la Pascua, la Navidad, las Misas dominicales y los días de obligación, y después en privado. Oren siempre, dice Jesús. Nuestro nuevo santo, San Juan Enrique Newman, describe cómo es la vida diaria de oración: No te acuestes en la cama más allá de la hora debida para levantarte; da tus primeros pensamientos a Dios; haz una buena visita al Santísimo Sacramento; reza el Ángelus con devoción; come y bebe para la gloria de Dios; reza bien el Rosario; recógete; mantén los malos pensamientos; haz bien tu meditación vespertina; examínate a ti mismo todos los días; vete a la cama a tiempo, y ya eres perfecto. Recuerde, un cristiano que ora es un cristiano victorioso. Que Dios los bendiga a todos!

What Matters Most in Life?
The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds, judges justly and affirms the right... Sirach 35:21-22
Prayer is the lifeblood of Christian life. It is the key that opens all spiritual doors. Prayer opens the door of our hearts so that Jesus may enter. Listen!, says Jesus, I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me (Rev 3:20). Therefore, to pray always without becoming weary (Lk 18:1-8), is to constantly keep the doors of our hearts open to God. It is to continually be disposed to the grace of God, which in turn orders our daily activities aright, enriches our spiritual life and helps us participate more effectively at liturgies. If prayer opens our hearts to God, then, how often we pray determines how important God is to us. Our best attention and time go to what matters most to us. Everyday we make a list of priorities. So, where is prayer and God in your daily to-do list? What kind of time do you give to it? Do you give ample quality time to prayer? If you don’t, then why? Your answers to these questions will tell you how important God is to you. Jesus teaches that persistent prayer moves God because it reveals how much we truly love him and yearn for him. This genuine love and inner yearning is what God quickly responds to. In the parable of the unjust judge, Jesus argues that if such an evil man could be moved by a widow’s persistence, Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? (Lk 18:6-7). To call on God “day and night” is to pray in season and out of season – i.e., during Lent, Advent, Easter, Christmas, Sunday Masses, and days of obligation, and afterwards in private. Pray always, Jesus says. Our newest saint, St. John Henry Newman, describes what a daily prayer life looks like: Do not lie in bed beyond the due time of rising; give your first thoughts to God; make a good visit to the Blessed Sacrament; say the Angelus devoutly; eat and drink to God’s glory; say the Rosary well; be recollected; keep out bad thoughts; make your evening meditation well; examine yourself daily; go to bed in good time, and you are already perfect. Remember, a praying Christian is a victorious Christian. God bless you all!

I love being able to dive into scripture especially in books and passages that we don’t normally hear or know from church. The Bible is full of so many amazing stories and has such a rich history of our faith that sometimes it can be hard to put it down. We tend to get into a habit of being too familiar with scripture that we hear at mass that we can tend to tune it out but if we truly dove into scripture we would never be bored of the word of God! This week we are talking about scripture with our year 1 teens and helping them break open the word in new ways so that they can enter more fully into the word of God. For a lot of people their bibles are sitting at home gathering dust rather than being used daily like they should be. So let’s dust off our bibles and dive into the word of God! Me encanta poder sumergirme en las Escrituras, especialmente en libros y pasajes que normalmente no oímos ni conocemos en la iglesia. La Biblia está llena de tantas historias asombrosas y tiene una historia tan rica de nuestra fe que a veces puede ser difícil dejarla. Tendemos a adquirir el hábito de estar demasiado familiarizados con las Escrituras que escuchamos en la misa que podemos tender a ignorarlas, pero si realmente nos sumergimos en las Escrituras, nunca nos aburriríamos de la Palabra de Dios. Esta semana estamos hablando de las Escrituras con nuestros adolescentes de primer año y ayudándoles a abrir la Palabra de Dios de nuevas maneras para que puedan entrar más plenamente en la Palabra de Dios. Para muchas personas sus biblias están sentadas en casa acumulando polvo en vez de ser usadas diariamente como deberían. Así que desempolvemos nuestras biblias y sumerjámonos en la palabra de Dios! Memorial Mass
During the month of November, it is customary to honor our deceased relatives and friends. On Sunday November 3, 2019 at the 10:30 mass, we will be honoring our loved ones who have died during the year (after November 2018) in a special way. Their names will be read aloud and family members will receive a candle in their memory. Their names will also be displayed during the month of November. You may bring a framed picture of your loved one to be displayed on the altar during mass. Please be sure to put your name on the back of the frame and remember to pick up the picture before you leave to go to the RECEPTION following mass in the Frances Cabrini Room.

Family to Family As Thanksgiving approaches we stop and reflect on all of our blessings. There are many in our city who don’t have a lot to be thankful for. On Wednesday,
Nov. 20, we will be serving a hot turkey lunch at Catholic Charities, 303 N. Ventura Ave. We are in need of volunteers to help prepare the food. If you would like to help or to donate, we need funds to buy the turkeys and all the trimmings, please contact Nita at (805) 650-8557. The Respect Life Ministry
The Respect Life ministry will be selling beautiful poinsettia plants after all of the Masses on the weekend of
Nov. 3rd and Nov. 10th on the east wing at Sacred Heart Church. By purchasing a poinsettia for $10.00, you can show your support for the Life Centers of Ventura County which provides free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, a helpline, baby and maternity needs, referrals and educational materials. Pick up of poinsettias is scheduled tentatively for Sunday Dec. 8th. Please call Wilhelmina Stoll at 805-647-7306 with any questions.

As members of the Catholic community, each of us can contribute to the healing of those harmed by abuse, especially
by remembering victim-survivors in our prayers. We pray for those harmed by someone, whether in church, family, school or community, confident that healing is possible, and mindful that we can all work to prevent further abuse. Inspired by the vision of a victim-survivor, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has created a prayer and information card as a tangible symbol of outreach and support to those in need. Please join in this effort and our shared hope that the resources and prayer on the card will reach those in need to bring the healing light of Christ to the darkest places of pain. The bilingual prayer card and posters, including information on how to report abuse, have been distributed to all parishes and are available for download at archla.org/support.
