THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday, the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, the Scriptural readings begin with a passage from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah where the prophet looks forward to the light that will appear bringing the glory of the Lord. In the second reading, from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians, we are told of the plan of God made known in Christ. In the Gospel, we are told that God’s plan for salvation includes all the nations of the earth as represented by the wise men from the East. EPIPHANY HOME BLESSING: An ancient Catholic custom is the blessing of homes on or near the feast of the Epiphany. Those wishing to do so are welcome to obtain a prayer card for this purpose as you leave Mass. There is also blessed chalk to mark the doorways of your home. CARING QUILT MINISTRY: The Caring Quilt Ministry sends a huge “thank you” to all who have supported this ministry over the years. As we get ready to kick off 2017, we invite you to stop by and check out our operation. It’s a wonderful group of eager, hardworking women willing to send messages of love and support through the quilts to our parish and beyond. There is something for everyone to do. No talent needed. We will be meeting the 2nd and 4th Saturday’s in January, February and March, weather permitting. Any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact Betsy Pfendler at [email protected] or 724-766-7435. Quilts are always available at the Parish Center.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: Our parish has Eucharistic Adoration on the second Monday of the month from the end of the 10:00 a.m. Mass until 6:30 p.m. The next opportunity will be on Monday, January 9th. Please come and spend some quiet time with the Lord on these days. Please sign up for a time on the board that is provided in the vestibule.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY: Today we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, where the Magi find the newborn king and offer him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. In the spirit of the Magi, please put your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box so that comfort and peace can once again be given to a newborn child. If you know of a family in need, please contact the Society by calling the parish office @ 724-625-1665 x2108. God Bless you for your continued support.
THANKS TO THE MCGINNIS SISTERS: It has been announced the McGinnis Sisters will be closing their store in Adams Township. Over the years they have been extremely generous in supplying deserts for our weekly fellowship dinners (which are now serving over 65 people each week). We are very grateful to them for their kindness. We are also actively looking for ways to fill in the “desert gap” left by McGinnis Sisters departure. SYMPATHY: The sympathy of the parish is extended to parishioner, Michele Goodworth and her family, at the death her grandmother, and parishioner Roseanne Simmons. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

MUSIC MINISTRY
On this feast of Epiphany we begin with the traditional song, We Three Kings. I have often wondered why the Magi brought those specific gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Since the early days of Christianity, biblical scholars have offered varying interpretations of the meaning and significance of these gifts. These valuable items were standard gifts to offer a King or deity in the ancient world: gold as a precious metal, frankincense as a perfume or incense, and myrrh as an anointing oil. In fact, these same three items were apparently among the gifts, recorded in ancient inscriptions, that King Seleucus II Callinicus offered to the god Apollo at the temple of Miletus in 243 B.C.E. The Book of Isaiah, when describing Jerusalem’s glorious restoration, tells of nations and kings who will come and “bring gold and frankincense and proclaim the praise of the Lord” (Isaiah 60:6) Scholars think that these three gifts were chosen for their special spiritual symbolism about Jesus himself: gold represents his kingship, frankincense a symbol of his priestly role, and myrrh a prefiguring of his death and embalming. So, the next time you sing this popular hymn, remember the vast history behind the texts! (Research from the Bible History Daily website, written by the Biblical Archeological Society staff.) Our choirs will be ministering at the following mass:
Children’s Choir January 8th @ 10:00 am January 29th @ 12:00 pm Devoto Bells January 22nd @ 10:00 am

In Social Studies, students just finished a unit on the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Students partic-ipated in two simulations to better understand how the United States government works. First, students each repre-sented a state under the Articles of Confederation, and experienced first-hand, the challenges of that system. Next, the students were broken up into groups to represent the branches of government and had to check and balance each other while discussing real-life political issues. In Algebra Readiness, students are working on a unit on ratios, rates and proportions. To apply their knowledge, they planned a “road trip.” Students had to calculate gas mileage, the costs of a rental car, meals, and hotels, and the created proportions to figure out the map scale to calculate their distance traveled. In Art class, seventh grade is working on “Monochromatic Winter Silhouettes” in acrylic paint. In Media, students are working on a "Christmas Around the World project. Students chose a country and are researching customs, tradi-tions, languages, weather, foods, decorations, and gifts representative of these countries. After researching, stu-dents are preparing a presentation in either Keynote or PowerPoint that summarizes their research and will orally present this project to their peers. In Science, the students in 7th grade are presenting their science fair projects to their classmates. They are seeing how each student applied the scientific process to their own individual projects. Students are also learning about the differences between viruses and bacteria and learning how to stay healthy during cold and flu season! In ELA, students just finished reading The Giver, by Lois Lowry. This is a wonderful book that opened the classroom up for some fabulous discussion. Students also worked really hard on their critical thinking skills. While at times this proved to be a daunting task, by the last chapter of the book, students were really thorough with their answers and expanding/supporting their thinking with the text. Students have spent the last three weeks reading A Christmas Carol. It has given everyone a new perspective on the lessons and themes that Charles Dickens embedded in this story. To accompany the Christmas Carol unit, the students also were asked to perform Random Acts of Kindness, or RAK’s. When they first started out, the majority of the students thought, “ugh another ELA project!” But, as time pressed on and they began to perform their RAK’s, their opinions quickly changed! Here are a couple of students’ thoughts.
“The best gifts come from the heart, and not your wallet.” ~ Gianna Tabbachi “Kindness is such a simple thing, but it is extremely powerful. We all have that power, and we need to use it to the best of our ability.” ~ Luke Phillips
Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year from Seventh Grade!
