FOOD PANTRY The Food Pantry, located in the old church in Mars at the corner of Clark and Cherry Streets, is open every Wednesday from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm.
The Food Pantry is always appreciative of your dona-tions (please do check to make sure donated items have not expired). This week we are most in need of the following items: Chicken Broth Toaster Pastries Pasta Sauce Juice Boxes Beef Ramen Noodles FELLOWSHIP DINNERS These Wednesday evening meals are of great help to our neighbors and provide food and fellowship for those in any need. Dinner is served at 5:00 p.m. every Wednesday in the Parish Hall (next to the church in Mars on the corner of Clark and Cherry Streets). The July 24th dinner will be hosted by the Ladies of Charity.
THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: The Scriptural readings for this Sunday, the Sixteenth in Ordinary Time, begin with a passage from the Book of Genesis where God enters into the life of Abraham and Sarah in a very real way. In the second reading, from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians, Saint Paul speaks of his own suf-ferings as benefiting the Church. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of both hospitality and attentiveness to His words. ALTAR SERVER TRAINING: Young people (entering Fourth Grade or older) are welcome as Altar Servers at Saint Kilian Parish. Training sessions for this ministry are scheduled for either Tuesday, August 6th from 9 am to 10 am or Tuesday, August 13th from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Church. You only need to attend one of these ses-sions which will last about one hour. Sign up is required prior to attending the training. Please contact Deacon Ralph at [email protected] or 724.625.1665 x2103 for more information or to register. CARING QUILT MINISTRY: The Caring Quilt Ministry invites anyone who loves to draw, sew, color and have fun to join us on Saturday, July 27 to see what we’re all about. We meet at the Fellowship Hall in Mars from 9am to 3pm and there is always a nice lunch and great break-fast goodies. We are always in need of anyone who will sew. And you don’t even have to come to the work days. Several work from home. The ministry keeps growing. In addition to quilts for anyone in our parish, we are now sending them to a prolife group to give to clients when they have their baby, cancer patients at Allegheny Health Networks and a Veterans group in Cranberry. Any questions, please contact Betsy Pfendler at 724-766-7435 or [email protected].
After attending Mass, the visiting youth from St. Kilian Parish of Hartford, Wisconsin
enjoyed a healthy breakfast provided by the KOC before heading to
Frederick, Maryland for their mission trip.
Thank You ...

SOLEMNITY OF THE DEDICATION OF THE CHURCH Next weekend, July 27 and 28, Holy Sepulcher Parish will celebrate the anniversary of the dedication of the new church. The church was dedicated on July 31, 2005. Within the Church’s liturgical directives, the anniversary of the dedication of a church is celebrated each year as a solemnity. In order to celebrate the anniversary appropri-ately, the actual celebration may be transferred to the nearest weekend. The Scriptural readings will be of the usual Sunday, but the prayers will be those for the anni-versary of the dedication of a church. A unique part of this celebration is the lighting of the dedication candles. There are candle holders at the places where the bishop anointed the walls of the church with sacred chrism. Those candles are lit only at the annual celebration of the church’s dedication.

MUSIC MINISTRY Our worship at our liturgies involves prayer in both spoken and musical forms. Our prayer is authentic and real when we pray (speak/sing) from our hearts, giving praise to God, asking for forgiveness, and rec-ognizing the Christ that is each of us. Our prayer (spoken/sung) has evolved over the two thousand years since Christ began His church. In the early cen-turies of the church there was a profound theological argument around the concepts of the sacred vs. pro-fane (in other words, the soul vs. the body). Is seems like that argument still has not be decisively conclud-ed. We are constantly struggling with the concept that things of this world should not mix with things that are sacred or of the soul. Liturgical music has evolved over these 2 millenniums as well. And the arguments of the sacred vs. the profane (now called “secular”) have spilled over into the realm of music. There has been much written as to the type and style of music that should be used in liturgy. We must remember, however, that the Universal Church is not a Euro-centric entity; it is a global entity. When one studies church history we see that, to survive and become part of the cultures of all mankind, it has had to assim-ilate the very fabric and traditions of the native culture of each region. One cannot arbitrarily take a fixed point in time (for example: the Renaissance period) and call that “ground zero” as a reference point for judging the validity of authentic liturgical music. The very definition of Liturgical Music is “that music which is composed and performed for sacred ritual”. Each culture and each time period in history has its own reference point for appropriate liturgical music. That is the beauty of the wisdom of Vatical Council II. Having the mass said and sung in the vernacular (language of the people) brought the prayer experience to a more meaningful and intimate level. Liturgical music had to change to meet the needs of the assembly. A well-balanced liturgical music program will reflect the rich heritage of the various styles of music in the Church and allow the assembly to enter a deeper prayer life through the music prayed at liturgy. If you would like more information regarding the Bell Choir, Children’s Choir or Adult Choir, or Cantoring please contact David Dreher 724-625-1665 x2113 or email [email protected].

Grant Charles Davidson son of Robert and Eileen Davidson
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY: In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus affirms that to be a disciple we must also sit at his feet and lis-ten to him. St. Vincent de Paul taught that it is only in prayer that we can give selfless loving service to those who are poor. This
week, please say a special prayer each day for the poor and forgotten in our parish. If you know of a "neighbor in need," please contact the Society by calling the parish office at 724-625-1665 x2109. God Bless and many thanks for your continued support and generosity!
SAFE ENVIRONMENT CLEARANCES: All ministry in the parish, even if it does not involve children, requires clearances to be completed before volunteering or partic-ipating in ministry. Items can usually be completed in one afternoon. We can help! These can be completed in per-son, at home and/or over the phone. Contact Jo Scheller at [email protected] for help and/or to set up an appointment.

Parents: Do you have a child with special needs that would benefit from the adaptation of faith formation materials or one-on-one catechesis? Now is the time to reach out and meet with us so that we can begin preparing for the fall. Meeting us now gives us time to tailor the programming to the needs of your child and ensure that we have volunteer(s) to work with your fami-ly. The more information you are willing to share with us, the better we can assist. That being said, if you or your family mem-bers have experience working with special needs children and you might consider volunteering with us, we’d love to welcome
you on board! Please contact Mary French in order to being the ’intake’ process for your child as soon as possible. 724.625.1665 x 2122. TEEN and ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! If you have experience working with special needs students or simply have a heart that is being called by this type of ministry, the Special Needs Ministry, which will kick-off this fall and offer program adaptation to students in need, desperately needs volunteers willing to assist as one-on-one catechists, special aides assigned to students in the regular classroom, or as teachers willing to lead small groups. This ministry is open to adults AND to teens! Teens age 14 and up who have been con-firmed are welcome to join this ministry, and in fact we are hopeful that they will become the backbone of this programming! This is a GREAT way for your confirmed teen to find his or her place in our Catholic Community and to serve others. We need many teens to take the lead in this ministry and commit to helping those in need. This is an EXCELLENT way to earn volunteer hours throughout the school year and to make a loving and merciful difference that matters. If you are interested, we need to know who you are now so that you can be trained for this ministry. Contact Mary French for more information 724.625.1665 x 2122 | [email protected] or go here to volunteer - https://saintkilian.formstack.com/forms/saint_kilian_parish_special_needs_ministry_volunteer_form.
Our Faith on Fire! School Year Programming, which includes Traditional (Sunday mornings for K-6), Family (somewhat home-school based for K-6), Confirmation Years 1 & 2 (2 year programming for students approaching Confirmation age), and Special Needs, will open registration August 1st! Please check the bulletin, website, and your inboxes over the next few weeks for more information. The parish website has information that you can read on the different options available so that you are prepared once registration opens. Visit this link and explore which option might work best for your family. https://
www.saintkilian.org/ministries_faithformation.html - click on Our Faith on Fire! Faith Formation Programming. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for our school year Faith Formation programming. URGENT! We are in need of catechists and aides for our Sunday Traditional program that runs 10:20-11:40 AM for grades K-6. Due to the numerous changes in our program-ming for this faith formation year, we anticipate a need for more classes at this time and this means more volunteers! Currently we are far short of the bare minimum number of volunteers needed. Please, if you are able to volunteer for this important and rewarding ministry, step forward now so that you have more time to prepare, to update clearances if necessary, and to help us
plan for how many students we can accommodate in our programming. Teens who will be juniors and seniors during the 2019-2020 school year may volunteer as classroom aides provided that they have good availability on Sunday mornings. Contact Mary French for more infor-mation 724.625.1665 x 2122 | [email protected] or volunteer directly by filling out our online volunteer form here - https://saintkilian.formstack.com/forms/new_ofof_volunteers .
