THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday, the thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Scriptural readings begin with a passage from the Book of the prophet Malachi where we are reminded of our ultimate accountability. In the second reading, from the Second Letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians, we are advised that while we wait for the Lord’s return we are to be careful of our conduct. In the Gospel, Jesus addresses questions about the end time.

SYMPATHY: The sympathy of the parish is extended to parishioners, Carolyn Bowers and her family, at the death of her father, Donald “Ed” Knoll and Rick Clemente and his family, at the death of his mother, Mary Clemente. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

CARING QUILT MINISTRY: The Caring Quilt Ministry will meet Saturday, November 19. Our usual day is the 4th Saturday of every month but due to Thanksgiving we’re moving it up a week. We are canceling our work day for December. We will resume in January, and weather per-mitting we will meet twice a month in January, February and March. If you have any questions, contact Betsy Pfendler at [email protected] or 724-766-7435. Quilts are always available at the Parish Center. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: Saint Kilian Parish holds

Eucharistic adoration on the second Monday of each month (beginning after morning Mass until 8:00 p.m.) in the church. The next opportunity will be on Monday, November 14th. The directives of the Church are that someone should be present before the Eucharist at all times. Parishioners are asked to spend some time before the Blessed Sac-

rament during the day. Please sign up for a time on the board that is provided on the tables outside of the auditori-

THE PASTOR:

ON THE ON MISSION INITIATIVE: This weekly column will deal with ques-tions and answers on the Diocesan

initiative entitled On Mission for the Church Alive.

Parishes throughout the Diocese continue to learn of the draft models for their parishes. This will continue until very early December. Parishes are now studying the draft models and obtaining detailed information of the implications of these models.

WEDDING COORDINATORS: Here at Saint Kilian, one of our ministries is that of Wedding Coordinator. These parishioners assist the wedding celebrant and the bride and groom at the rehearsal and wedding. Their role is chiefly coordination and support. This is especially important in that we are now in a new church (a much larger space). There are several people who perform this ministry so the work likely involves a hand-ful of weddings each year. There are usually two or three coordinators at each wedding. If you are interest-ed in finding out more about this ministry, there is a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 16th from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. in the lower level of the new church. This meeting is for veteran coordinators as well as those who would like to begin this ministry.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

MUSIC MINISTRY

Our hymn during the Presentation of the Gifts is a mantra. It is meant to be sung over and over again while contemplating the words. Nada Te Turbe is a poem written by St. Theresa de Avila in the 16th century. The poem is lengthy but powerful. This is just a brief excerpt translated from the Spanish: “Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, every-thing passes, but God stays. Patience reaches it all; he who has God nothing lacks: God alone suffices.” The Taize community in France uses this poem and others like it in their ritual prayer. Their music is meant to be in a mantra form, however, this poem has been set to music by other composers as well. We pray it today in Spanish and English and as the music unfolds, let the message wash over you and give you peace. Our various choirs will help us with musical prayer at the following Masses:

Children’s Choir November 20th @ 10:00 am Devoto Bell Choir November 13th @ 10:00 am

Adult Choir November 13th @ 12:00 pm November 20th @ 12:00 pm

For more information regarding the Adult Bell Choir, Children’s Choir or Adult Choir, please contact David Dreher at [email protected] or 724-625-1665 x2113.

OUR PARISH FAMILY

PITTSBURGH CATHOLIC NEWSPAPER: The Pittsburgh Catholic newspapers are on the counters outside of the worship space where our bulletins and other aide are displayed. Please help yourself to them. They are mailed to your homes twice a year, at Fall and at Lent. If you have not received them at your home, please call the parish center and we will add you on the mailing list. INTERPRETED MASS FOR THE DEAF: Interpreted Mass for the deaf is every Sunday here at Saint Kilian Parish at the 10:00 a.m. Mass.

FINANCIAL REPORT: Due to early submission of this week’s bulletin (in observance of Veteran’s Day) the statistics for last week will be reported in next week's bulletin. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY: The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now?

Ask yourself “What would Jesus Christ do?” and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to cele-brate Thanksgiving. If you know of a family in need, please contact the Society by calling the parish office @ 724-625-1665 X2108.

The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy is a powerful Bible study that will draw you closer to Christ. The prophets afflict the comfortable and com-fort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness.

Join the Women’s Bible Study group as they discuss this exciting Bible study during the Advent Season starting November 30th-December 14th (the group will return to the study during Lent) . The Bible Study Group meets Wednesday’s from 9:30-11:30 am in Meeting Room C (lower level of the Church). All are welcome! Books may be purchased at the Parish Office for $20. For more information, contact Chris Hespenheide at 724-316-1309 or Jean Mentzer at [email protected].

A Youth Group for 5th-8th Grade

Fifth Grade News  The fifth grade year has been off to a fantastic start! The religious theme of our fifth grade year is Sacraments. Stu-dents have been learning about the three categories of Sacraments: Initiation, Healing, and Service of Commun-ion. Currently we are learning about heroes. These heroes are not heroes like Spiderman and Superman, but the heroes of our faith, the Saints. In the month of November, we will be researching the life of a Saint.

In science, we have been learning about what makes up everything around us, matter! Students got to experiment with different tools to measure matter such as spring scales and balances. Students even designed their own boat and tested its buoyancy! From this experiment we discovered that building materials that are less dense are more buoyant. Another fun topic we enjoyed was the periodic table of elements and learning about how when elements combine, new matter is formed, such as water (H20) and table salt (NaCl). We look forward to discovering more in science this year as we discuss electricity, forces, and astronomy.

The students have been exploring the origins of our country in Social Studies. We have been learning about ancient cultures, like the Aztecs and Incas, along with the Native American tribes of the Eastern Woodlands, the Great Plains, the Northwest Coast, and the Southwest Desert. We will be creating totem poles at the end of the chapter. In Language Arts, we are reading Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare. During our novel study we will be discussing what life was like living in Colonial times and the Penobscot Native Americans. Along with our novel, we will be using iPads to engage in web quests about what it was like to live during these times. In English class, we are working on pronouns.

Fifth graders are busy learners, and we are so thankful to be here at Saint Kilian Parish School!
