2014-15 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD MEDIA GUIDE 2

The Saint Joseph’s women’s track and field squad returns29 letterwinners – including 12 career Atlantic 10 point scorers,11 career ECAC participants, and five school recordholders –and welcomes 14 newcomers in 2014-15. Entering his 30th sea-son with the women’s squad and 49th overall with the SJUtrack and field programs, head coach Kevin Quinn holds thehighest of expectations of both his veterans and rookies alike asthe Hawks begin this year’s journey toward success at the high-est levels.

Quinn has selected a strong and capable quintet to lead theHawks this year, and Saint Joseph’s 2014-15 captains are seniorhurdler and short sprinter Georgia Mason, senior jumper KatiPolaski, senior long-sprinter Marina Rufo, and junior middle-distance runners Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka.

“Each event group has a captain, and they have exhibitedreal leadership within the team, not just at practice, but in plan-ning team activities,” said Quinn of his core five. “We wentdown to Ramblewood this October, and they ran the wholeoperation. I gave two talks, and they ran the rest of it. That’sthe way it should be, and it was very profitable from that stand-point. I’m counting on them to keep me informed.”

The seniors – Mason, Polaski, and Rufo – have demonstrat-ed excellent work ethic and commitment to the track and fieldprogram over their careers while Hehir and Radzwilka, fresh offof the 2014 cross country season, did a phenomenal job in lead-ing the young distance group this fall. To top it all, all five haveraced at one of the highest levels – the Atlantic 10Championships.

SPRINTSQuinn will look to utilize both veteran experience and

younger talent in the sprint events this season with junior CarlyMcGowan and sophomore Carly Montgomery.

Entering her third set of indoor and outdoor seasons onHawk Hill, McGowan is the expected definitive leader of theshort sprints. McGowan competed in three different shortsprint events at the A-10 level last season and owns sprint PRsin the indoor 60m (8.08), 200m (26.75), and 300m (44.38) andoutdoor 100m (12.64) and 200m (26.11).

“Carly [McGowan] is the top returner,” said Quinn. “Shecame back in very good shape after a really good summer. Justwatching practice, there are certain things that you see, andshe should have a very good season.”

Quinn holds additional expectations for Montgomery, whotransferred in after spending the fall semester of her freshmanyear at Salve Regina University. Montgomery posted outdoorPRs in the 100m (13.14) and 200m (27.34) and ran legs on three4x100m relays that all placed in the top five of their respectivemeets.

“Carly [Montgomery] has made the adjustment,” saidQuinn. “She is now a full-fledged member of the team.”

LONG SPRINTSThe talent and potential is limitless with this year’s group of

long sprinters, and Quinn expects a specific quartet to make adifference.

“In the long sprints, the four that deserve mention areMarina Rufo, who is a captain, and three sophomores –Courtney Foster, Ashley Gerald, and Katie Koss,” said Quinn.“Those sophomores are going to be very significant this year. They’ve gotten past the freshman business and, this is just fromwatching practices, they are far ahead of where they were atthis point last year.”

An accomplished long-sprinter for the Crimson and Gray,Rufo finished 22nd in the 500m (1:21.39) at the Atlantic 10Indoor Championships last season and 23rd in the outdoor400m on the conference level and owns a sub-minute outdoor400m PR (59.93). Last season, short sprinter Mercedes Yanoraled the rookie trio of Foster, Gerald, and Koss throughout theyear. This year, Rufo will own that leadership role.

Coming off of a spectacular rookie season in which sheearned the title of the team’s “Best Freshman,” Foster ownedSJU’s top times in nearly every sprint event last year en route toowning collegiate PRs in the indoor 200m (26.13), 300m(42.37), and 400m (58.11), and outdoor 100m (12.42), 200m(25.13), and 400m (57.12). Foster finished 13th in the 200m atthe A-10 Outdoor Championships. Koss competed in eight dif-ferent sprint events between the indoor and outdoor seasons

while Gerald took on five, and both placed in the top-20 twiceon the A-10 Championships level. If these sophomores canimprove upon what they accomplished as rookies, there is noceiling to their potential success this year.

Rufo will also look to lead the Hawks in the 400m-800mrange. And, for the second preseason in a row, Quinn has onceagain been impressed by the offseason work of one of hisstrongest long-sprinters.

“Jenna DeAngelo again put in a terrific summer and hascome back way ahead of where she was last year,” said Quinnof the junior.

There is quite the excitement surrounding the return ofredshirt junior long sprinter Dannah Hayward, SJU’s onlyreturning ECAC point scorer and three-time school recordhold-er. An injury plagued Hayward’s sophomore season, but if ableto return to and maintain full strength and health throughoutthis set of indoor and outdoor seasons, the outcome can bephenomenal.

In one of the most successful rookie campaigns in SaintJoseph’s women’s track and field program history, Haywardbroke three school records and scored at both the A-10 andECAC levels. Hayward owns the school record in the indoor500m (1:13.96), which she set at the ECAC Championships enroute to an eighth-place finish. Her school-record performanceranked her fifth overall and claimed the top freshman spot inthe A-10 rankings; she also placed fifth in the event at A-10s.Also a star in the hurdles, Hayward spent the outdoor seasonrefining the 400H.

“Dannah is coming back from injuries and a sophomoreyear that really didn’t exist, and she is not where she was but ismaking real strides and is progressing,” said Quin. “I told herthat her goal is not December and her goal is not January. Hergoal is February. We probably wont see anything that youwould expect from Dannah until later in the indoor season.”

Sophomore Angelena Minniti raced the 500m and 800mlast year and will round out the returning long sprinters.

DISTANCEJunior captains Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka will lead

the young distance group. This particular event group took a hitwith the graduation of a large core of experienced and talent-ed seniors, but Hehir and Radzwilka did a phenomenal job inboth leading the group and maintaining a strong work ethic andcommitment to team goals on the cross country course this fall.

“In the middle distance and distance group, the top onesthere are Lauren and Sara,” said Quinn of his captains. “Laurenhad a solid cross country season and should be ready to stepforward and become one of the top kids in the conference inthe mile and 3000m. Sara should be a very strong performer inthe 800m, 1000m, and mile.”

Quinn also expects juniors Emily Chaundy, Kathryn Cols, and Tess Doggett and sophomore Sydney Coughlin to remainthe backbone of the team as the distance group continues todevelop throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. Theserunners competed hard and at a high level during the crosscountry season, and Quinn expects these Hawks to continuethat momentum.

“They will be counted on to keep progressing off of thebackground of the cross country season,” said Quinn.

Junior Melissa Donnelly and sophomores Alexandra Fiesel,Meghan O’Keefe, Jacqueline Pignataro, and Sarah Regnaultwill add depth to the distance events.

RELAYSAlthough the relays did take a hit with the graduation of

accomplished sprint and distance legs due to graduation, thereare returners that are mentally and physically prepared to takethe Hawks to the next level on the relay scene. The depth andtalent in the long sprints will impact the relays in the best ofways, and SJU returns four long sprinters who own legs of a pairof school record-holding relays in senior captain Marina Rufoand redshirt junior Dannah Hayward (indoor 4x400m, 3:49.60)and sophomores Courtney Foster and Katie Koss (SMR,4:04.54). Additionally, the outdoor 4x400m of returners Fosterand sophomore Ashley Gerald ran the second-fastest 4x400min SJU history (3:48.34) at the William and Mary Colonial Relays.

“The best relay will be the 4x4,” revealed Quinn. “It will bereally good. All of our relays should qualify for ECACs, but the4x4 will be a factor in most of the meets we go to. One of thegood things is that there are probably six or seven athletes incontention for that – Marina, Courtney, Ashley, Katie . . . One ofthe freshmen could be a person in contention for that and, there could be Georgia Mason. I’ve used her in relays and everytime I have, she has run very well, because she’s an athlete anda competitor . . . But that’s going to be my biggest headacheand joy this year, trying to keep seven people happy with fourspots. We typically don’t have that as an issue.”

But it’s a “good” issue to have. Especially when they havealready proven that they can take down parts of the recordbooks and do it on the big stage: the A-10 Championships.Foster, Gerald, and Koss combined for 21 points – seven apiece– by running on both 4x400m relays that scored at the indoorand outdoor conference meets. Additionally, Hayward andRufo have scored in the 4x400m on the A-10 level.

The other main relays will be in good hands. Junior distancesensation Lauren Hehir joined Foster on the indoor DMR thatearned bronze at 2014 A-10s and also owns six career points inthe 4x800m. Hayward and Hehir have also represented theHawks at ECACs in the 4x400m and DMR, respectively.

HURDLESFor the second consecutive year, Kayla Charles and

Georgia Mason will lead SJU in the hurdles. The senior duo hasalready rewritten SJU’s recordbooks: Charles in the outdoor100H (14.47) and indoor pentathlon (3,724 points) and Masonin the indoor 60H (8.82).

In the first meet of last year’s indoor season, Mason brokethrough barriers to break her own school record in the 60H,clocking in an 8.82, to earn silver at the meet. That perform-ance would go on to top all SJU 60H performances on the sea-son and rank sixth in the Atlantic 10. Mason also won the eventat the Princeton Tri-Meet and owned the squad’s top-fivetimes, including the only three SJU sub-9.00 performances.

Mason also went on to take home SJU’s top-five perform-ances in the outdoor 100H last season, including a top-time andPR 14.67 at the 2014 A-10 Outdoor Championships. Coming offof an injury that hampered her sophomore season, Masonbroke both of her indoor and outdoor hurdle times last yearand, if healthy and having already scored in the 60H at the con-ference level, could return to that form.

“We need Georgia to be healthy,” said Quinn of his seniorhurdles captain. “She has looked terrific at practice, better thanlast year.”

Charles’ experience ranges from the indoor 55H and 60H tothe outdoor 100H and 400H. She set the school record in the100H (14.47) in the preliminaries of the 2013 A-10 OutdoorChampionships and took third in the 60H in back-to-back meetsearly in the indoor season at the Jack Pyrah Invitational andPrinceton Tri-Meet. Charles will look to utilize her experience inthe hurdles as the school recordholder and A-10 scorer in theindoor pentathlon will strive to make a return to the event.

“Kayla has looked exceptional,” said Quinn. “And, she’s allon fire for the pentathlon. She is relentless.”

The anticipated return of redshirt junior Dannah Haywardto the hurdles will add an extreme amount of depth and talentto the group. After being extremely limited all of last year dueto injury and earning a redshirt year, Hayward will look to con-tinue the momentum of her phenomenal rookie campaign, where the she set three school records, including the outdoor400H (1:00.11) at ECACs. During that outdoor season, Haywardled all freshman in the A-10 and ranked sixth overall in the400H and went on to place 23rd at the USA JuniorChampionships. Hayward is a point scorer in the 400H on boththe A-10 and ECAC levels.

A pleasant surprise from last season came in the form ofthen-rookie and current sophomore Emely Ramirez. Ramirezmade eight 60H appearances during the indoor season, includ-ing a PR performance of 9.46 at the Geigengack Invitational anda showing at the A-10 conference meet. Ramirez went on tocompete in the outdoor 100H and improved upon her 100Htime all three meets to post personal-record 15.56 for ninth atthe Lehigh Games.

3,000M STEEPLECHASEThe vacated spots in the 3000S due to the graduation of

school record holder Maureen O’Donnell and two-time A-10point scorer Erin James will warrant strong performances, anda pair of junior distance competitors in Lauren Hehir and TessDoggett could step up for the Crimson and Gray. Hehir is theonly returning Hawk who competed in the event last season, recording a PR (11:04.49) for 11th overall at the A-10 OutdoorChampionships while Doggett also has experience in the eventand posted a PR performance (11:40.43) at the 2013 A-10Outdoor Championships.

JUMPSSJU’s standout senior trio of triple jumper Gabriella

Becattini, high jumper Brianna Hunt, and long jumper KatiPolaski has been a core component of the jumps section overthe last three years and will now lead the Hawks’ jumps unit in2014-15.

Becattini returns for her final collegiate campaign in thetriple jump after a standout junior season in which she tooksixth to score at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships, broke her indoor PR (11.75m) to win the event at theGiegengack Invitational, and demolished her outdoor PR(11.73m) at the 2014 Penn Relays.

After a junior season that was quite limited due to injury,Hunt will look to return to her sophomore-year form, a formthat saw her qualify for the 2013 ECAC Indoor Championshipsand place seventh at the 2013 A-10 Outdoor Championships.Hunt reached an indoor PR of 1.70m and an outdoor PR of1.65m back in 2012-13 and, in just one opportunity to competein the high jump last indoor season before sustaining that sea-son-ending injury, posted a high jump mark of 1.55m – a markthat stood as tied for the team-best mark of the season.

The key component to this duo’s success will depend great-ly on their health throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons.

“Gabby and Brianna could be significant factors, but weneed to get them healthy,” said Quinn of his senior triplejumper and high jumper. “They will not appear with significantresults until well into January, maybe even February.”

After breaking her outdoor PR in the long jump (5.40m) lastseason, Polaski will look to build off of a solid junior campaignheading into her final year. Polaski took 11th in the long jumpat the 2014 A-10 Outdoor Championships and won the title atthe Giegengack Invitational. Quinn believes that with Polaski, the best may be yet to come.

“Bold prediction: she is going to have a very, very strongyear,” said Quinn of his senior jumps captain. Junior Tess Doggett

Senior Brianna Hunt

Quinn also expects his pair of high-jumping sophomores -Rachel Kline and Emely Ramirez - to put forth solid efforts intheir second years. As rookies, both Kline and Ramirez repre-sented SJU in the high jump 13 times apiece, tied for the team-best mark in the event for both the indoor (1.55m) and outdoor(1.55m) seasons, and competed at both the indoor and outdoorA-10 Championships.

“Now sophomores, Rachel and Emely have become signifi-cant performers within the conference.”

Sophomore long and triple jumper Kiersten Moylan andhigh jumper Katie Gross will also return to the jumps group.

NEWCOMERSThe Hawks welcome five distance runners, four sprinters,

three hurdlers, and two jumpers as 14 new faces will competefor the Crimson and Gray this year.

“The freshmen are good and are going to make a contribu-tion,” said Quinn.

The distance newcomers include Goucher College sopho-more transfer and four-time 4x8 district champion JuneChiango (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area), sophomore JuliaJenkins (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy), six-time state3200m state qualifier Alicia Ezekiel-Pipkin (Haddonfield,N.J./Haddon Township), two-time All-District First Team selec-

tion Megan O’Dowd (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck), and three-time All-Monmouth County selection Cassidy Weimer(Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South). All five Hawks raced withthe cross country squad in the fall and could make a significantimpact on the young distance group this year.

The sprints will see the addition of four freshmen in All-State selection Nia Dupiche (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway),four-year Penn Relays 4x400m leg Alex Edger (Philadelphia,Pa./Nazareth Academy), Avon Grove’s school recordholder inthe indoor and outdoor 800m Caroline Keegan (West Grove,Pa./Avon Grove), and Andrea Warren (West Chester, Pa./VillaMaria Academy).

A trio of freshmen hurdlers in three-time All-CentralConnecticut Conference selection Rose O’Brien (WestHartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic), two-time PIAA OutdoorPennsylvania State Championship qualifier Steph Toland(Havertown, PA./Haverford), and Central Group III New JerseyState Champion Ariana Wilson (Tinton Falls, N.J.//Neptune) willalso look to make an impact in their first collegiate seasons.

The freshman duo of five-time Pennsylvania state medalistClaudine Andre (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) and All-Olympic Conference selection Aarynn Crawley (Sicklerville,N.J./Timber Creek) will round out an experienced jumps group.

Kevin Quinn enters his 49th year at Saint Joseph’s University and will begin his30th season with the women’s track and field program in 2014-15. Quinn served as thedirector of the track and cross country programs for 47 years between 1996 and 2013.

A 1962 graduate of Saint Joseph's, Quinn joined the Hawks athletic staff as thehead coach of the men's cross country and track squads in the fall of 1966, a positionhe held for 23 years until 1988. In July of 1989, Quinn was appointed to the positionof assistant athletic director for facilities and was promoted to associate athletic direc-tor for facilities, a position from which he retired, in 2001.

SWEENEY FIELDTHE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has beenflapping its wings for 58 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughoutevery basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will NeverDie."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks”since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the stu-dent body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” win-ning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typ-ified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aeri-al attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontin-ued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It hasbeen selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, SportsIllustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball maga-zine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

THE HAWK

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years ofuse. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field hasundergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over1,200 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The pitch is the cur-rent home of the varsity men’s and women’s track and field, soccer andlacrosse teams.

The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 upon completionof an extensive expansion project. The venue has significantly increasedthe seating capacity for SJU’s varsity lacrosse and soccer programs. Thenew name recognizes the contributions of Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA), amember of the University’s Board of Trustees and the lead benefactor tothe renovation project. Sweeney Field was blessed in conjunction withHawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 while a formal dedication was heldon April 5, 2014.

The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 permanentseats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconic Barbelin Hall as wellas the addition of 1,100 portable seats on the opposite side of the field, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. In addition, the facility willincludes a new state of the art press box and enhanced sound system.

Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a 70,000-seatfootball stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate the field’s original grand-stand and hillside seating in 1960 due to the construction of Villiger (nowPost) Hall/Bluett Theater. Since 1990, the field has undergone a numberof upgrades and enhancements designed to expand usage and function-ality, including installation of AstroTurf artificial surface prior to the cur-rently TigerTurf surface, lights, and bleachers. Additionally, the trackreceived a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athleteswho use it for all seasons.

Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soccer andlacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the home venue forHawk baseball, field hockey, football and softball, in addition to periph-eral usage by the men’s and women’s track teams, along with countlessclub, intramural and recreational activities. Legend has it that a 1777Revolutionary War skirmish took place on the site.

Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T. Finnesey. Anative of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesu and president of a localauto manufacturer, he was a member of SJU’s Foundation Committee, which was established in 1922 to raise support for the College’s reloca-tion to Philadelphia’s Wynnefield neighborhood. Finnesey was a leaddonor to the stadium project in 1927.

The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was started in 1958 andplayed every season but one (1960) at Sweeney. The squad has compiledan overall mark of 168-194-34 in 54 seasons at Hawk Hill, the most victo-ries of any program on Sweeney Field. SJU opened its playing groundswith a 6-0 victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a trulymulti-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the useof the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to MandevilleHall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium.

Baseball called Sweeney home from 1947 to 1959. The field hockeyteam played on Sweeney Field until 2007 and now practices and hostsgames on Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. The location has alsobeen home to women’s soccer since 1996 and the field hockey teamwrapped up its last season on Sweeney in 2007. The women’s lacrossesquad is 74-104 in 21 seasons on Hawk Hill while the men’s lacrosse teamhas compiled an overall 66-88 mark in 21 seasons on Sweeney Field.

Overall, the site has seen 1,259 games entering the 2014-15 academ-ic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 570-633-56.

The Mackal Fieldhouse at the University of Rhode Island will once againserve as host to the 2015 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and FieldChampionships from February 21-22.

George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va. will be the site of the 2015 Atlantic10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships from May 2-3.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is nowthe Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. Whatstarted as an eight-school, men’s basketball-onlyaffiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one ofthe best conferences in the country.

That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10 – DavidsonCollege, The University of Dayton, DuquesneUniversity, Fordham University, George MasonUniversity, The George Washington University, LaSalle University, University of Massachusetts,University of Rhode Island, University ofRichmond, St. Bonaventure University, SaintJoseph's University, Saint Louis University andVirginia Commonwealth University.

The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigatingsweeping conference realignment, addingGeorge Mason University for 2013 and DavidsonCollege in 2014. The additions follow a very suc-cessful first year by Virginia CommonwealthUniversity, which began full membership on July1, 2012. The league continues to draw nationalpraise for its decisions during conference realign-ment in selecting institutions driven by academicsand basketball. The league was deemed the “win-ner” of conference realignment in 2011-12. Thethree additions were guided by the five-yearStrategic Initiative Plan that was adopted duringthe 2010-11 academic year.

The 14 member institutions of the A-10 areunited and strengthened by their diversity. Eachis extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university ora land grant institution. The varied pursuits ofeach member prove that there are many threadsthat weave the fabric for a great conference.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total pop-ulation of over 76.5 million people within its geo-graphic footprint of eight states and the Districtof Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sportsthis year: baseball, men's and women's basket-

ball, men's and women's cross country, fieldhockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's andwomen's indoor and outdoor track & field,women's rowing, men's and women's soccer,softball, men's and women's swimming & diving,men's and women's tennis, and women's volley-ball.

The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, havemade a strong commitment to making the aca-demic and athletics equation a successful one.Over the years, the league membership hasstrived to better recognize the academic accom-plishments of its student-athletes. TheCommissioner's Honor Roll, which cites everyAtlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade pointaverage or better, recognized 2,653 student-ath-letes in 2013-14.

The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honorstwo student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10provides 10 postgraduate scholarships with$7,000 grants to selected student-athletes. In2013-14, nearly 200 student-athletes earnedAcademic All-Conference recognition.

The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earnshigh marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. Thisincludes ranking fifth among all 32 Division IConferences in the Academic Progress Rate (APR)and in the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in thepast year’s announcements.

Success on the playing field has mirrored theA-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earn-ing NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and a record 13men’s and women’s basketball bids. Men’s bas-ketball in the Atlantic 10 saw a record six teamsearn NCAA Tournament berths and for the sev-enth straight year an A-10 team advanced to thesecond weekend of play when Dayton made a runto the Elite Eight.

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is anindependent, Catholic, Jesuit universityteaching disciplined reasoning, effectivecommunication and a love of learning. FromWillings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to StilesStreet in North Philadelphia to its currentlocation on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s hascontinued to grow and change with thetimes. The University combines the Jesuit tra-dition of academic excellence, a history ofservice and an ideal campus location to pro-duce successful students who strive to makea good world even better.

Full-time, undergraduate day enrollmentcomprises approximately 4,670 students.Graduate, evening and executive programspush total enrollment to more than 8,000 stu-dents.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCESaint Joseph’s nationally-recognized aca-

demic reputation is confirmed by ongoingacknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News &World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tra-dition of intellectual inquiry and personalconcern manifests itself in small, challengingclasses taught by a caring faculty. Graduateassistants do not teach, so undergraduatescan be sure they are receiving the very besteducational experience from trained experts.One-on-one interaction between studentsand faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s.

A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-the-board learning for every student.Supporting that curriculum are comprehen-sive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that preparesstudents not only for employment and grad-uate school, but for life itself.

In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which hous-es the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, theCenter for Food Marketing and the region'sfirst "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms."An 87,000-square-foot international academ-ic center featuring state-of-the-art distancelearning technology, it is located near thecorner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICEThe students of Saint Joseph’s University

are dedicated to making today’s world evenbetter. A natural spirit of volunteerism hasenabled the University’s community serviceprograms to become the most popularextracurricular activities on campus. In addi-tion, a Service Learning program allows stu-dents to receive academic credit for theirwork outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and internation-al opportunities for student service. FromNorth Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from

New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains,Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuitmission of serving those in need. TheThanksgiving Dinner Dance for area seniorcitizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival forthe handicapped are two annual student-runevents that draw thousands of special visitorsto campus for fun and friendship.

best of dynamic Philadelphia with the subur-ban, residential setting of the elegant MainLine. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two coun-ties, allowing students to literally enjoy thebest of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cul-tural, social and athletic attractions, is easilyaccessible, while the safety, serenity andgreenery of a suburban campus are right athand.

PHILADELPHIASJU’s Philadelphia location gives students

access to two worlds.
