I look forward to seeing you soon.
Over the past year I have wanted to
provide a newsletter which will focus
on the work which we are doing in
Saint Joseph’s Centre and the work
that is going on in Down and Connor.
Our aim is to keep you up-to-date
with the happenings within our deaf
community and the Diocese in which
we work.
Who is Who? I am Father Devlin, I was appointed in
August 2013 as the Full-time Chap-
lain to the Deaf in the Diocese of
Down and Connor. I have been work-
ing with Father Paul for many years
and I am sure you will recognise me.
My sole purpose is to help support
you with all your Spiritual and Pasto-
ral needs and where I can with any
educational needs, UNLESS you ask to
me to complete any homework's,
then I can’t!
I am sure you are aware that I work
with a team to help complete this
work. We have Father Darach Mac
Giolla Catháin who is Parish Priest in
Corpus Christi and works Part-Time
with our Deaf Community. There is
also Denise Flack - Coordinator of
Northern Chaplaincy to the Deaf and
Sister Maeliosa Byrne O.P. who all
support this work.
What’s On We have a great range of different
events planned for this forth coming
year, and many events that happened
last year. I intend to give you a snap
shot of the upcoming events later in this
newsletter. However some important
Pastoral and Spiritual information
which you may need:
Masses There is Mass each Sunday at 11am in
Saint Vincent de Paul Parish, this is fully
signed and with visual support also. The
Address is: 169 Ligoniel road, Belfast,
BT14 8DP.
Were you aware that we have a Cen-
tre for the deaf? We have a Centre in
which we as a community can gather
and plan some activities. At the mo-
ment our initial plans are to have
Sunday Mass and at different times
throughout the year followed by a
light lunch. You can find out more
about those dates in the Calendar. We
have some very exciting plans for our
Centre for the Deaf and you can find
out more about these inside the
newsletter.
For those who don’t know about the
Centre it is on the Grosvenor Road in
Belfast, near the Royal Hospital . The
Centre has a fully working kitchen
with a large gathering Hall down-
stairs and two big rooms upstairs.
There is also secured parking at the
back of the Centre in its own car park.
The Centre can be opened up to other
groups and if you would like to use
the Centre or more information then
please feel free to contact Father
Devlin.

Let’s remember our community is
only as good as each of us put into
it, so to make it lively pass on the
word about our centre to other
people who may not use it at the
moment.

happy to help.

Deaf Chaplaincy Monthly Day Trips
P a g e 3 I s s u e 1
As you will see from the “Significant
Events” Calendar we will be having
monthly day trips.
This will give us a day to go somewhere
and see new sites. It may be that you
would like to take a trip to Banbridge
and visit the “Outlet” Centre there and
get some Christmas shopping in or we
go away to Downpatrick and see the
trail of Saint Patrick.
The key to this is for us to go together
and have some fun, and it will be on the
1st Monday of each month so make sure
you let Father Devlin know that you
wish to join in on the trip as it will be
first come first served with limited
seating on the bus.
For more information please text or
email Father Devlin.

As you know Father Devlin is
Chaplain to all the deaf for
the Diocese of Down and
Connor, which includes Jor-
danstown School. In this role
Father Devlin works closely
with other Chaplains who
work within the school. Fa-
ther Devlin helps provide the
Sacamently preparation for
all Catholic children within
the school ensuring that they
receive their Sacaments
After meeting with many of you over the past year,
we are in agreement that our deaf centre needs some
life brought into it.
Our New Plans for our centre is going to include :
•A refurbishment of the existing Deaf Centre to pro-
vide a purpose built shared community resource
which will have dedicated training, recreational and
educational programmes for the deaf, hard of hear-
ing, blind, visual impaired and the extended commu-
nities. This will include other organisations to en-
hanced Local and Regional links and also cross bor-
der links which are already in place. Allowing us to
maximize the usage of our Centre and provide much
need help and support for other groups and organi-
sations to give them assistance in the local area as
well.
•The works are required in order to bring the exist-
ing building up to current building control standards,
including new replacement heating system and new
internal lighting, with provision of a dedicated inter-
nal fit out of existing ground floor spaces to provide
a purpose built community learning and outreach
facilities and an upper floor IT area and Prayer
Space.
Left of page is a plan of what the ground floor would look
like after the works are completed. Below is a plan of what
the first floor and prayer room area would look like after
the work is completed.
There are also initial plans for the one apartment to be
reassign into a 4x individual apartment complex. It is also
hoped that the income raised from this would support the
rest of the centre.
Hopes, Dreams and
Expectations for our Centre

We
are in the process of updating our Deaf Register and as a
result we would like to make sure we have your contact details
up to date.
So we would be grateful if you could complete the box below and return it to Father
Devlin as soon as possible. If easier you can email the details to [email protected] and just put “Deaf
Register” in the subject box. Also if there is anyone in the family who is deaf and housebound and would like
to be added to Father Devlin’s First Friday’s Sick List then please let him know either by Text or Email.
If there is more than one person at home who is deaf please add their details into a separate page. Our aim is
to move a lot of our communication over to email if this is possible. Please do not forget to put your email
address onto the sheet.

We would like to extend our congratulations to Bernadette
McCaffrey and Éamon McCaffrey on celebrating their 25th
Anniversary and the Renewal of their Wedding Vows on the
25th August 2014. I think you will all agree it was a beautiful
day and a lovely meal. Thanks to all who attended. Berna-
dette’s Mother and Father (pictured in the photo) Celebrated
their 50th Wedding Anniversary and renewed their wedding
vows a few weeks prior to Bernadette.
ALSO
Someone TURNED the big 50. We will not say who it was as
Father Devlin wouldn’t want everyone to know he is 50
NOW!!!! The turn out in Saint Joseph’s Centre and the Cake
was a lovely touch, and also proof that Father Devlin did have
hair.
ALSO
The Down and Connor Pilgrimage to Lourdes this year had
the theme of "Joy of Conversion " It was great to see the com-
munity from Saint Joseph’s Centre with Father Devlin in
Lourdes sharing, as you can see, a little ice cream! Remember
to keep the date free next year as it would be great to see an
ever greater number of us out there next year.
