St. Joseph’s Outreach Ministry to the Homeless is a mem-ber of the Association of Faith Communities (AFC) and has served men, women, and families at the winter shelter and at the AFC shelter for three years. More than 50 members of our St. Joseph’s parish have participated in this ministry.

The AFC shelter is a group of 12 churches providing over-night shelter to homeless men, women and families in their church halls. This helpful and worthwhile service to our homeless community has been very rewarding to all who have participated.

This year the AFC has doubled the number of churches pro-viding shelter and therefore serves meals to twice as many people. St. Joseph’s Outreach Ministry to the Homeless has teamed up with St. John’s Episcopal Church in Aptos and will provide dinner and breakfast on the second Tuesday of every month for their shelter guests.

Many volunteers make comments such as: “It warms my heart to see how grateful our shelter guests are”; “I just love to share what I have”; and, “It’s important for me to remem-ber ‘There but for the grace of God!”

If you want to do something special for “the least of our Brothers and Sisters,” please join our Ministry. Call the St Joseph’s offi ce and leave your contact information. We look forward to having new members join us with another year of successful outreach service.

A Message From Father Wayne:

Our Magnifi cat Gift to YouMy Dear Friends,

A beautiful and faith-building magazine that some of you may already enjoy is the “Mag-nifi cat.” There’s a lot to this little publication. Besides being a guide to daily Liturgy and Prayer, it is fi lled with articles and essays on spiritual life, Christian Art, personal prayer, and the Saints. Please accept my gift to you of the Magnifi cat’s October issue – dedicated to Extraordinary Missionary Month – that it may inform and inspire you to advance the Church’s saving mission. Copies will be handed out in the Vestibule after each Mass next weekend.

EL BIEN PASTOR - MEDITEMOS, ORA CONMIGO, PROPOSITO

It is with a sense of great loss and sorrow that St. Joseph’s Parish acknowledges the passing of members of our family:

( silencio interior ).Jesús, Tú me conoces bien.

Congratulations to our students who have completed two years of English lessons at St. Josephs.

Our English Language Ministry is affi liated with the Litera-cy Program of Santa Cruz and Pro Literacy an Internation-al nonprofi t organization. The Literacy Program provides training for our tutors and materials for our students.

In addition to our two teachers, we are pleased to an-nounce that one more of our parishioners will participate in Literacy training this fall and will be tutoring two more students bringing our total number of students to 12.

In our classes, we teach Speaking, Reading and Writing as well as the State Of California Life Survival Skills. Our students have completed their fi rst text book, Side by Side, Level 1 and are now on their way in Level 2.

The fi rst year, we completed the Life Survival Skill, Emer-gencies, which requires students to identify emergencies, call 911 in English and understand safety signs. This past year we completed the Life Survival Skill, Accessing Health Care, which requires students to make doctor ap-pointments and speak in English to a doctor about health issues. In the upcoming months, we will work on Nutrition,

learning about healthy eating and a healthy life style espe-cially to prevent Diabetes.

Our students attend class weekly, do their homework and try to practice English in their daily lives. We are very proud of their progress watching our students gain confi -dence in speaking and writing English. Our students and teachers wish to thank Father Wayne Dawson and the St. Joseph’s community for their support throughout the year.

If you have interest in tutoring or assisting in this wonder-ful, rewarding ministry, please contact the St. Joseph’s offi ce and leave your contact information.

Dear Friends,

The 2nd Annual Fiesta Mexicana last Saturday was a wonderful experience. Together, we celebrated the rich di-versity of St. Joseph’s Parish in great dance, terrifi c music, and wonderful food. I want to express a huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make it a joyous experi-ence for our Parish. Special recognition goes to Juan and Anna Enriquez, who not only took the lead in making Fiesta Mexicana a reality, but also in making the Hispanic Ministry thrive and grow. If Saturday’s celebration is any indication, St. Joseph’s Parish can look forward to the Ministry’s con-tinued growth and success, and many more Fiesta Mexi-canas in the years to come.

Blessings, Father Wayne

Bendiciones, Padre Wayne
