STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’” JOHN 20: 19 Are you good at making people feel welcome? When you meet someone new, a new neighbor, a new work colleague, a new parishioner, do you make them feel at home? Many of us can probably do a much better job at this. When we make people feel welcome, we make them feel like they are included instead of being excluded. A simple “hello” and a smile go a long way.

YOUR EASTER OFFERING IT’S NOT TOO LATE!

Thank you to all those who have already given. If you were unable to make your donation last Sunday, you can still make your Easter donation to Saint Joseph Church. The parish greatly depends on this collection to meet our larger operating expenses. Simply memo your check “Easter Offering” and drop it in the collection basket or mail directly to the parish office at 105 Harrison St., New Milford, NJ 07646. Your generosity and involvement help to make Saint Joseph the wonderful parish it is. Thank you!

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Because the biblical writers lived in a semi-arid land where water was scarce and draught was always a danger, it is not surprising that there

are about six hundred scriptural references to water. God was seen as controlling it from storage places he had built both in the dome of the sky, from which the rain fell, and under the earth, from which water emerged as springs, wells, streams, rivers and seas. Although some rain came in the fall and the spring, most of it arrived from December through February, and it was so precious that people built cleverly designed cisterns to conserve as much of it as they could. Water became a powerful image of what we ultimately long for, as in Psalm 42, 2-3:

As the deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O Lord. My being thirsts for God, the living God. When can I go and see the face of God?

Water also represented how God cared for his people, as when Moses, at God’s direction, struck the rock of Horeb to release streams of it when the Israelites were terrified that they would perish from thirst during their desert wanderings (Exodus 17, 6). And Ezekiel’s mystical vision near the

end of his book of prophecy sees waters that flow from Jerusalem’s temple transforming the brackish waters of the Dead Sea, a promise of God’s far-reaching grace:

Wherever the river flows, every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live, and there shall be abundant fish, for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh (Ezek 47, 9).

Jesus saw water as evidence of his Father’s goodness to all people, even sinners, since God permits his rain to fall on the just and the unjust alike (Mt 5, 45). And he told us that if we truly thirst, he is the one who provides

(continued above)

us with the water that will quench it and that rivers of living water would flow from the hearts of those who believe in him, this water being the gift of the Holy Spirit he pledged to send us (Jn 7, 37-39). And in the New Testament, Baptism’s water is both a cleansing of sin and a conferral of new life from God, as St. Paul says:

You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. And even when you were dead (in) transgressions …, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions … (Col 2, 12-13).

The sacrament of Baptism is the dazzling fulfillment of the promise Isaiah longed to see kept when he envisioned a time when

… the Lord will guide you always and give you plenty even on the parched land. He will renew your strength, and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring whose water never fails (Is 58, 11).

The great Church Father St. Ambrose, in eloquent and prayerful words, aptly summarized the meaning of Easter, in its baptismal emphasis, when he wrote:

Therefore, Lord Jesus, let this water come into my soul, into my flesh, that by the moisture of this rain the valleys of our minds and the fields of our inmost hearts may grow green. Let your drops come upon me, besprinkling grace and immortality. Wash the steps of my mind, that I may not sin again.
