Dear Parishioners, My, my, where has the Easter season gone? Yes, its still with us, but not for very much longer. In a very few days, it will blend in to what is known as Ascensiontide. This mini-season reflects two distinct liturgical things. First, as Ive mentioned many time, the Church used to have quite a few Octaves, i.e., an eight day period where the particular feast would be extended, due to its importance and solemnity. Well, the Ascension would certainly qualify in that regard. This coming Thursday is Ascension Thursday. To be sure, in most churches, the feast will be celebrated liturgically next Sunday. But theres still no getting around it, this Thursday is Ascension Thursday and no power can change that. Anyway, the time after Ascension Thursday up until First Vespers of the Friday of the following week is actually what used to be known as the Octave of the Ascension. But what we also have which extends from the First Vespers of the Ascension up through First Vespers of the Vigil of Pentecost is the first ever Novena, coming from the Latin novem for nine. And finally, though we dont hear much about it these days, there is still time to make ones Easter Duty, which is to go to confession and receive Holy Communion (the Church commands this once a year). Though in the old days, Easter Time extended to Trinity Sunday inclusive, it is now concluded with Pentecost Sunday. Gradually the liturgical intensity of the Easter season is winding down as well. It is the custom here that the Vigil of Pentecost is not solemnly celebrated, though it certainly could be. It s considered as a kind of little brotherto the Easter Vigil. As I mentioned, Pentecost will be coming up soon and the last liturgical highlightof the liturgical year, pretty much up until the first Sunday of Advent, will be the solemn celebration of Corpus Christi, replete with First Holy Communions and a grand procession through the village. As we did last year, well process along Moen Street. I wonder how many patrons of the numerous bars along the route will emerge from the darkness to see whats going on. I’m happy to report that St. Joseph is receiving a number of filled out census forms. Were growing, my children and my friends. Dear Parishioners,

My, my, where has the Easter season gone? Yes, it’s

still with us, but not for very much longer. In a very

few days, it will blend in to what is known as “Ascensiontide.” This

mini-season reflects two distinct liturgical things. First, as I’ve

mentioned many time, the Church used to have quite a few Octaves,

i.e., an eight day period where the particular feast would be

extended, due to its importance and solemnity. Well, the Ascension

would certainly qualify in that regard. This coming Thursday is

Ascension Thursday. To be sure, in most churches, the feast will be

celebrated liturgically next Sunday. But there’s still no getting

around it, this Thursday is Ascension Thursday and no power can

change that. Anyway, the time after Ascension Thursday up until

First Vespers of the Friday of the following week is actually what

used to be known as the Octave of the Ascension. But what we also

have which extends from the First Vespers of the Ascension up

through First Vespers of the Vigil of Pentecost is the first ever

Novena, coming from the Latin novem for nine. And finally, though

we don’t hear much about it these days, there is still time to make

one’s “Easter Duty,” which is to go to confession and receive Holy

Communion (the Church commands this once a year). Though in the

old days, Easter Time extended to Trinity Sunday inclusive, it is now

concluded with Pentecost Sunday.

Gradually the liturgical intensity of the Easter season is winding

down as well. It is the custom here that the Vigil of Pentecost is not

solemnly celebrated, though it certainly could be. It’s considered as a

kind of “little brother” to the Easter Vigil. As I mentioned, Pentecost

will be coming up soon and the last liturgical “highlight” of the

liturgical year, pretty much up until the first Sunday of Advent, will

be the solemn celebration of Corpus Christi, replete with First Holy

Communions and a grand procession through the village. As we did

last year, we’ll process along Moen Street. I wonder how many

patrons of the numerous bars along the route will emerge from the

darkness to see what’s going on.

I’m happy to report that St. Joseph is receiving a number of filled out

census forms. We’re growing, my children and my friends.

CMAA Status: Parish goal: $18,800

Amount pledged to date: $18,662; Pledge balance: $138; Pledges

paid: $14,525; Pledge paid balance: $4,137; Total amount needed to

reach goal, i.e., paid: $4,275 ($4,137 + $138). Remember, if we

exceed our goal, a full 70% of that excess comes back to the parish
