Sunday Reading Reflection

Jesus makes all things new! New is great! I remember when I was a kid I got it in my head that I had to have a new bike. It needed to be “brand new” not just new to me. Being immature at the time I didn’t get the point that the reason it was

better to get a used bike from the guy down the street is because they were really great bikes and the money spent on a brand new bike, while more, would not buy a better bike. But it didn’t matter. For some reason I wanted it to be brand new! Why do we want “new” so much I don’t know, but we do like things that are new. In the Pope’s Encyclical Letter on the Environment the second reading is mentioned. The Pope reminds us that while we should protect this world we have been given, while we want to and should keep it clean, it is nevertheless growing old and will eventually wear out. It is like our bodies. Our hope cannot be, at the end of the day, to try to preserve the newness of this world. He tells us that God’s promise and therefore our hope needs to be in the “new heaven and the new earth” to come. I remember when my “brand new” bike started to have little spots of rust on the rims and spokes. There was some stuff I got to make it all shiny again but it was just weird to keep putting all that time and energy into making it shiny. It was good to keep my bike new for a while and in the same way we should take care of the world and try to keep it clean and bright. However we should not be disappointed when it does not work out. Our real hope is in the new heaven and the new earth. Many say this is a “pie in the sky” kind of thinking. Maybe it is, but I like pie and why not have it in the sky. Is a “pie on the earth” attitude a better one? Is it the “pie” that people object to? Should it be rice in the sky? Whatever it is and where ever it is, the point is - this world is passing away and we as people of faith do really believe that there is something above and beyond all that is here, and it is our hope that not only helps us endure this world but also helps us be the best undaunted and undiscouraged shiners of the rims. WYD World Youth Day is coming. We are looking forward to having our car wash/yardsale rescheduled. We were able to go to one of our member’s father’s funeral together, a man who is a veritable Father of our whole town, Mr. Terry McNabb. Please remember to consider sponsoring one of our pilgrims. We have a group who is made up of youth from all socioeconomic backgrounds, which is beautiful especially in this the Year of Mercy. Most of the time only youth of means are able to enjoy such wonderful educational and generally enriching opportunities.

4 Fifth Sunday of Easter

SAINT JOHN’S TOWNSEND

90 Week Challenge – Week 58

by Sarah Christmyer and recommended to me by Karen Cormier a parishioner here at St. John’s. 90 Week Challenge – Week 58 by Sarah Christmyer Bible Time Period: Royal Kingdom You established a kingdom on your servant David and promised him an eternal throne: Establish your kingdom in our midst. Reflection The building of the Temple is a significant milestone in the history of Israel. This is a permanent place for the Lord’s presence in the midst of His people and the primary place of worship (the only place of true sacrifice). That presence will be evident to all on the day the Ark of the Covenant is brought into the sanctuary: “when the priests came out of the holy place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord” (8:10-11). This week’s Reading 1 Kings 5-8 This week’s Question What is at the heart of Solomon’s prayer in chapter 8? Taken from The Great Adventure Bible Study 90-Day Reading Challenge. MONTACHUSETTE CHORALE CONCERT

Sunday, May 1, 2016 2:00 p.m. $12.00 in advance $15.00 at the door Leominster City Hall 25 West Street, Leominster An amazing concert for a great cause with contemporary, classical, patriotic and jazz music, staring none other than our own Claire Neas from the 5:00 p.m. Mass, Sue Roy and Ellen Duval from our 10:30 a.m. Folk Group, along with many other talented singers. The concert is approximately 1 - 1 1/2 hours long and all the proceeds go to the needy, especially children. There will be yummy homemade baked goods made by the members themselves. This year's spring concert benefits "Cara's Backpacks for Kids," a small group of anonymous folks who purchase and fill backpacks with school supplies and a new outfit (even jackets and shoes) for elementary kids in need each year. As you can imagine, the number of backpacks called for grows in number every fall. Please come out and sponsor this great cause. Shirley & Mary Fran & Jack update - Here we are finishing our 2nd week (April 15th) of daily Proton Beam Radiation! We truly know what “Bone-tired”) means! Thankfully things are going pretty well. We pray for energy to see us thru this exhausting daily routine. Week #3 begins April 18th. We meet with oncologists after treatment today to evaluate progress. Again- - - - many thanks, much gratitude for all the prayers.

6 Fifth Sunday of Easter

SAINT JOHN’S TOWNSEND

All parents are reminded that educating your children in the Catholic faith is very important and something that you promised at your child’s Baptism. They will learn how to practice their faith by going to Mass with you. Live your faith so that they will

learn to live theirs! Teach them to pray with you at Mass. It is the greatest gift you can give to your children. Class Schedule for the month April 24 – Week B (Grades 1, 3 and 4 are already done for the year) May 8 – May Procession at 10:30 Mass All children are invited to join in the May Procession and the Crowning of Mary. First Communion children are invited to wear their First Communion clothes and others are invited to wear their ‘Sunday Best’. Sacramental Dates for this year: First Communion retreat – April 30, 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon First Communion rehearsal – Thursday, May 5 at 6:00 p.m. Sacrament of First Communion – Saturday, May 7 at 11:00 a.m. The Sacrament of Confirmation was held at the 6:00 PM Mass on Sunday, April 10, 2016. Bishop Robert Hennessey confirmed our 36 candidates at a beautiful Mass and celebration. Please keep them in your prayers. Congratulations!

This past weekend's offertory collection was: $4,588.00 Our 2nd collection for utilities was: $2062.00 Our 2nd collection this weekend is for: Home Missions/Black & Native Americans

and the Archdiocese for Military Services. Did you know...... St. John's is fortunate enough to have 2 ways to assist families in paying for school: First, we have scholarships for our graduating high school seniors. Those seniors who are active, registered members of St. John's parish are encouraged to apply for these scholarships to help them pay for college. For those of us that have college age children, you know the incredible financial burden you take on when you have to make that first payment.... in full, to your child's dream school. Or perhaps you send your child to their 3rd or 4th choice college, solely based on the fact that that's all you can afford. While these scholarships are not enough to pay for a semester of college, they are enough to help pay for books and other associated costs. What a blessing to have at least the books, or laptop computer paid for, prior to you sending in the money for that first tuition bill. Second, we are able to assist families who have children going to St. Bernard's Catholic High School in Fitchburg, MA with a small tuition subsidy. The money is given directly to St. Bernard's, from the Archdiocese of Boston, who then gives out the subsidies based on the applications that St. John's sends to them. So, if you have a child who is planning on attending St. Bernard's (high school only) next year, please grab an application for that as well. We love being able to support out parishioners in sending their children to a Catholic high school. The applications for both of these are available in the beige box directly in front of the Rectory. Please come grab one! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at: [email protected] Thank you for your continued generosity. ~ Susan Tocci, Business Manager
