Ordinary Time-Not So Ordinary

Because the term ordinary in English most often means something that's not special or distinctive, many people think that Ordinary Time refers to parts of the calendar of the Catholic Church that are unimportant. Even though the season of Ordinary Time makes up most of the liturgical year in the Catholic Church, the fact that Ordinary Time refers to those periods that fall outside of the major liturgical seasons reinforces this impression. Yet Ordinary Time is far from unimportant or uninteresting. Ordinary Time is called "ordinary" not because it is common but simply because the weeks of Ordinary Time are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order. Thus, the numbered weeks of Ordinary Time in fact represent the ordered life of the Church—the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in fasting and penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ.

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 June 25, 2017

There was a time in my life when I loved Fall; the falling leaves, the cool air, pumpkins and nights when I could wear a sweatshirt and be near a fire. As I get older, while I still love the things of Fall, Fall is not really something I look forward to anymore. Not because I do not still love these things, but because I know what follows Fall…the brutal cold and snow of winter. This Fall is going to be different…for I am truly looking forward to Fall here at SJOC. The staff is working hard to plan for what I know will be an exciting time, a time full of opportunities for ALL of us to grow in our relationship with Jesus as well as consider ways that our relationship with God and others can be strengthened through the sharing of our gifts. I won’t go into detail here, but as we plan, I ask that you begin to pray now...pray that we, the staff, can allow ourselves to be directed by the Holy Spirit to give to this parish what we need to be strengthened in our faith and in our resolve to be true disciples of Jesus. Pray that our parish family responds to the opportunities that will be offered, pray for those that will not respond, and pray for those that we will serve. I have a vision for this Fall…that our parish comes together, perhaps in a way that it never has before…that we recognize our strength to do the work of Christ in our world, and how much stronger we are when we are ALL working as one. Whether you are very involved, or not at all involved, or somewhere in between, I pray that EVERY parishioner is willing to be a part of what I know will be a blessed time for our parish. We need everyone…God needs everyone, so that we can be all that God dreams that we can be. I’m not dreading Fall nearly as much as I usually do.

Saint John of the Cross Mission We are the Catholic Community of St. John of the Cross, established in 2009. Uniting the people of God as one family, we are rooted in, and empowered by, our sacramental life and Eucharistic celebrations. Living as disciples of Jesus Christ, we recognize our God given potential and challenge one another to share our giftedness, embrace our diversity, and engage in social outreach, service and education. In doing so, we seek to extend the reign of God in Euclid and the wider community.

Families of Phyllis Batchko and Matthew Urbas

May they know the peace and comfort of God’s love and find strength in the support of friends, family and our parish community.

Spiritual Wellness Center Recently I let you know about the newly formed Spiritual Life Committee. One of the group’s important initiatives is transforming at least part of our Gathering Area into a “Spiritual Wellness Center.” Look for more changes coming to that space. Meanwhile, feel free to provide suggestions for our consideration to me via email or phone regarding use of that place to enhance and deepen the spiritual life of all those who grace us with their presence at Mass. Thanks and God bless.

See you at Mass! Richard Grebenc, Pastoral Associate

Pope Francis request: Take the Youth Survey! The Catholic bishops of the world are planning to meet in October 2018 for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. The theme of this gathering is “Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment.” In preparation for this major synod on youth, Pope Francis wants to gather input from the Catholic faithful.

The Diocese of Cleveland has made available a survey questionnaire to gather information on the current state of the young in our diocese that will be included as part of the pre-synod discernment document. The survey can be found on the diocesan website home page, www.dioceseofcleveland.org. All are invited and encouraged to participate by taking this short survey.

The bishops of the United States pray that the results of this survey will help them more fully understand the experience of young people in our Church and in our country — their hopes, dreams, fears and struggles — so that the synod may bear fruit in offering more insight and direction to our ministry with young people.

Retrouvaille is a three-month program to help couples struggling in their marriages. It has three phases, starting with a weekend experience in which couples learn to re-establish communication and to gain new insights into themselves as individuals and as a couple. Post sessions are held over a period of 12 weeks to further develop and enhance the techniques learned on the weekend. A support group is available offering interaction with other couples who are

striving to improve their relationship. The next weekend is scheduled for September 8-10, 2017 at the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Beachwood. For more information go to their website www.helpourmarriage.com or contact Marce & Liz Gliha at [email protected] .
