STEWARDSHIP CORNER

In today’s readings we see how the simple act of “welcoming” someone builds the

Kingdom of God, and the builders are re-warded. Be kind and welcoming to all.

Eucharistic Congress During the early summer, we continue to look forward to our annual Eucharistic Congress, taking place at the Charlotte Convention Center on September 8-9, and the speakers who will be present. Since last week’s bulletin was put together, there has been a change to the first Saturday English speaker. Instead of Fr. John Paul Mary, the first Saturday English speaker, speaking at 12:30 PM, will be Mario Enzler. He is a former Swiss Guard who served St. John Paul II for three years in the dou-ble capacity of soldier and conductor of the Swiss Guard Band. After finishing his time of service at the Vatican, he worked for 18 years in investment banking and corporate finance. He then left the financial indus-try for a full-time work in Catholic education at the classical-curriculum academy he and his wife founded in 2008. When he is not in his office or with the stu-dents in a classroom teaching music or ancient Greek, he can often be found speaking at retreats and confer-ences where he shares about the role the Holy Father had in fostering his commitment to the New Evangeli-zation and his love for the Liturgy and helping shape him into a being a better man, executive, and leader.

Be on the lookout for our fundraiser,

coming Sunday, August 13!

Holy Father’s Prayer Intention of the Month

Lapsed Christians: That our brothers and sisters who have strayed from the faith, through our prayer and witness to the Gospel, may rediscover the merciful closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian life.

PRAYING HEARTS, a St Joan of Arc prayer ministry, welcomes prayer requests from all parishioners for them-

selves, a loved one or a friend in need. The person may have medical problems, upcoming surgery or other life issues. On the other side of the coin….Any adult members of the parish, who feel led to join this ministry, are invited to join our group of Praying Hearts by receiving periodic emails with a list of those in need and offering pray-ers for those who have requested them. Please feel free to contact Elaine Lovelace or Linda Gaines if you have a prayer request or wish to join. Their contact numbers are in the bulletin or you may speak to them in person.

THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST

Today we have the beautiful story of the woman promised a child, the wonderful exhortation about life in Christ, and a powerful instruction from Jesus. An embarrassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many chal-lenges and blessings offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoicing, and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be enjoyed and shared generously with others. Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole ap-ostolic instruction received by candidates for bap-tism at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its im-portance as a core belief, and as a means of compre-hending the story of the Resurrection. Christ's resur-rection is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a time, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other members of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but raised to eternal life with Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

It’s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth trac-ing between the Declaration of Independence and the lan-guage of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catholics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning “Charles Carroll of Carrolltown”—a defiant “come and get me if you dare” postscript aimed at the British. Carroll’s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task formally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our lit-urgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world.

Pancake Breakfast

We apologize for all the confusion about previously scheduled dates for pancake breakfasts. Hopefully we have it right this time. This month, please join us Sunday, July 16, after both the 10:00 and 12:00 Masses for the pancakes and sausages you all love. Join with your fellow parishioners for food and fellowship.
