In the Gospel this week Jesus continues to define the law and what it means in our lives. The Law said that if one were injured, one could seek compensation but only to the level equal to the injury. Hence, “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”. Without this restriction revenge could be without limit: “a heart for an eye and a leg for a tooth.” It was a sort of Mosaic Tort Law. Jesus proposes tort reform: do not seek revenge at all but be detached from worldly things. Justice belongs to God ultimately. Short term gain is fleeting and not satisfying. It is a waste of time and only causes grief, tragedy, gray hairs and ulcers to constantly keep grudges for every little slight. Take road rage, for example. It seems that in Jamesburg people are more laid back while they drive. We have this strange intersection up the road and people seem to be instinctively courteous. It may be because they are intimidated by the “near occasion of accident” although Deacon Patrick tells me that accidents are extremely rare in that location. Venture further into Monroe Township and all courtesy goes out the window. People telling each other they are “number one,” honking horn if there is a delay of 2 seconds when the light changes. crossing over double yellow lines if there is a slow poke truck in front, only to be stopped by a red light up ahead. Another example is civility. Listen to differing points of view courteously. If you disagree with somebody don’t set fire to his house and kidnap his dog. Don’t scream and yell and kick him in the shins. Just listen and ask questions politely. There may be some misunderstanding or they may have a valid point you may be missing. It’s like children who cover their ears and start singing and saying, “I can’t hear you…” Love your neighbor. Your neighbor is not your enemy. Even if your neighbor were your enemy Jesus proposes the ultimate in tort reform: “Love your enemy.” Holy Lent is almost here. One resolution for Lent would be to RELAX, love your neighbor and be kind. Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta was asked how to be a better person. She said, “Be kind, be kind, be kind.”

WORD OF LIFE
“We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us.” - Pope Francis
Page 4
Ama a tu prójimo.

Catholic Trivia
This week we celebrate the feast of the Chair of Peter. What does that mean?
Last week’s answer: There tend to be two purposes to liturgical things, one corporal and one spiritual. The former is simple, to keep out external contaminants such as flies. The spiritual purpose is to recall Christ’s sacrificial death and burial. After the deposition from the cross Christ was anointed and covered with a cloth for his body and a separate one for his head. (Jn 20:6-7). The sacrament of Christ’s sacrifice is likewise covered with the corporal underneath and the pall above as Christ was covered with the shroud.

HAVE YOU LOST A LOVED ONE? When a loved one dies, our world is forever changed. For the heart-broken, daily life is overwhelmed with sadness. The simplest of tasks becomes a monumental challenge as our minds and hearts are clouded with sadness, loneliness, fear and possibly anger. If you are suffering over the death of a loved one, The Immaculate Conception Bereavement Support Group may help you during this painful time. Our trained and caring facilitators will guide you on your journey through grief beginning on Monday, February 27 at 7:30 PM in the Rectory basement conference room and will continue for the next seven Mondays. The rectory is located at 18 South Street, Spotswood. Each session focuses on a stage of grief and offers a safe haven during a difficult time. For information or to register, please call the parish office at 732-251-3110 during office hours or email [email protected].
Please watch your mailbox for a letter from Bishop Checchio coming to you this week announcing the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. You will be interested to know that Bishop Checchio, after a number of meetings and in consultation with many of the pastors and staff, has made some changes to the Appeal. The first, as you probably already noticed, the Appeal has been moved from the fall to a Lenten campaign. The active phase has been condensed and the number of solicitation mailings has been reduced. Another significant change is the reintroduction of Parish Rebates. To allow parishes to share in the success of the Appeal, Bishop Checchio is offering parishes a rebate of 50% of the amount collected over goal. Through your support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal you help those in our diocese whose needs are the greatest—the poor, the homeless, and those struggling with illness or grief. Among other needed pastoral ministries, your gift also supports our priority ministries of evangelization, promotion and support of religious vocations and enhances the work of forming our youth. The many pastoral, educational and charitable ministries of the Diocese of Metuchen would not be possible without a generous contribution from every household. Please be as generous as your means allow.
