Stained Glass and Other Updates As you read this, I am on retreat near Phoenix, AZ. I scheduled this retreat months ago, and it’s hard to break away from all the parish work that needs to get done. I am looking forward to some intense prayer during Pentecost, however, because I had my first Mass as a deacon and my first Mass as a priest on two consecutive Pentecosts. (June 12, 2011 and May 27, 2012) I get to spend this retreat reflecting on these and many other “firsts” since my ordination. God has been so good to me!

Director of Evangelization Position. The problem facing Catholic parishes is a decrease in Mass attendance and practice of the faith in general. Because I hate to reinvent the wheel, I turned to others who have spent much more time on this. I found three books that reflect hours of combined experience: Forming Intentional Disciples by Sherry Weddell, Rebuilt by Fr. Michael White and Tom Corcoran, and Divine Renovation by Fr. James Mallon.

Some common themes. First, business as usual isn’t going to turn things around. If most families that go through a Baptism, First Communion or Confirmation aren’t coming to Mass now, keeping everything the same isn’t going to change their participation. Second, we have to bury the false notion that bringing people back to the faith is only Father’s job. If this didn’t work when we had three priests for three parishes, how can it work if there is one priest for three parishes? Third, if a parish is serious about a culture change, it needs to put its money where its mouth is. This is why I opened up a full time position for evangelization. Evangelization is a fancy word for letting people know the Good News. God’s grace transforms lives! If we don’t know and/or live this, then it’s no surprise that many people aren’t coming to Mass.

Stained Glass Donation Update. Whenever I proposed the new adoration chapel, one question arose again and again: “How can we honor the memory of Fr. Clarence Waguespack who founded the adoration chapel?” I think that question was answered after I announced a donor drive to beautify the chapel with stained glass and a parishioner offered to donate the cost of a large stained glass window in his honor.

Fr. Clarence had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother, so this parishioner suggested that donating the large Annunciation window would be a good way to honor Fr. Clarence. Because so many chapel members wanted to have Fr. Clarence honored in some tangible way in the new adoration chapel, I feel it’s the right thing to give this parishioner the opportunity to donate the cost of the large Annunciation window before we hold our donor drawing this Tuesday. That means when we draw names for donors, there are still five windows left to donate. Thank you to all those interested in beautifying the chapel. I look forward to my return from retreat!

Peace, Fr .Matthew

New Marian Feast Day Pope Francis has made the devotion to the Virgin Mary a new fixed celebration in the Roman Catholic calendar. The Vatican published a decree in March in which Francis declared that the Mary "Mother of the Church" feast would be celebrated on the Monday following Pentecost. This year, it falls on May 21.The decree said Francis wanted the devotion to "encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as

well as a growth of genuine Marian piety.” (excerpts taken from US News & World Report)

Congratulations to all our cluster graduates. Please remember that wherever life takes you on the next part of your journey, you will always have a home at St. Philip, St. James and Our Lady of Peace parishes!
