SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT When John proclaimed a baptism of repentance, as today’s Gos-pel relates, he called people to a deep change of heart. For John the Baptist, repentance was not simply regret for past failings, but a commitment to orient life around God’s desires and pur-poses. What might living in alignment with God’s desires look like? Our readings offer some clues. Baruch indicates that when mercy and justice are embraced like a royal garment, we may see the fruits of repentance. Paul notes how the Holy Spirit has been active within the church in Philippi, forming them to live in a loving and united community of faith, so they may witness to the love of God. And John himself suggests that a repentant heart clears a path for God to enter, leveling the mountains and valleys of our resistance, so that God might dwell within.

SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO Cuando Juan proclamo un bautismo de arrepentimiento, ası como lo relata el Evangelio de hoy, el llamo a las personas a un cambio profundo. THE BEGINNING OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR. It’s a time of great anticipation as we await the arrival of Christ on Christmas morning. In fact, the word Advent comes from the Latin word ad-venire that means coming or arriving. Just as in Lent, the liturgical color of Advent is purple. Both of the seasons prepare for great feast days in the Church year. The purple color also connotes the penitential dimension of the sea-son as Advent is a time of preparing, quieting and disciplining our hearts for the full joy of Christmas. The altar is also meant to be decorated in a more restrained manner during this season. The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. Right in the middle of Advent, several Marian feasts are also celebrated. They are the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep-tion of Mary and the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The inal days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus par-ticularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). “At Christmas, we on earth receive Jesus, the bread from heav-en. It is a bread that never grows stale, but enables us even now to have a foretaste of eternal life. . . I want to come to Bethle-hem, Lord, because there you await me. I want to realize that you, lying in a manger, are the bread of my life. I need the tender fragrance of your love so that I, in turn, can be bread broken for the world.” (Pope Francis, Homily, Dec. 24, 2019)

EL PRIMER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO MARCA EL INICIO DEL AÑO LITURGICO. Es un momento de gran anticipacion mientras esperamos la llegada de Cristo en la manana de Navidad. De hecho, la palabra Adviento proviene de la palabra latina ad-venire que signi ica venir o llegar. Al igual que en la Cuaresma, el color liturgico del Adviento es el purpura. A Gift of a Novena of Christmas Masses

Let us celebrate the Birth of Christ by offering a Novena of Masses for our family and friends, living or deceased. In your envelope package you have received a Christmas Flower envelope please use them by writing the names that you will offer the Mass too. Also, we will have a special Christmas Novena envelope for the same purpose. The Novena of Masses will begin on December 24th and conclude January1st Your donations will help in decorating the Church for our Christmas season.

FASTING BEFORE MASS

FastbeforeMass. It is Church law that one fasts for at least (1) hour before receiving Holy Communion. Water and medicine can be consumed, of course. The purpose is to help us pre-pare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. No Food andDrink in Church. The exceptions would be a drink for small children, water for the priest or choir (if dis-creet) and water for those who are ill. Bringing a snack into church is not appropriate, because we want to set the church apart as a place of prayer and re lection.
