THE GLASTONBURY THORN I have never lost my childhood fascination with the legends surrounding Camelot and the Holy Grail. On my first tour of England in 1972, I spent the greater part of a day at Glastonbury. The ruins of the great Abbey recall Henry VIII’s disbanding of England’s monasteries and Oliver Cromwell’s wholesale destruction of Catholic monuments a century later. But some things are not easy to destroy. Legends die hard! The legend of Glastonbury takes us back to the Apostolic age. Joseph of Arimathea, who claimed the body of the crucified Lord and buried it in his own tomb, has an important role in the legend. After the Resurrection, the Bible tells us nothing more about Joseph of Arimathea. His story is identified with the Holy Grail—a chalice sup-posed to have caught the blood and water flowing from Jesus’ side as He died on the cross. During a persecution of the followers of Jesus, Joseph fled from the Holy Land. He travelled to distant Britain in a small boat with eleven disciples. Jo-seph carried with him the Holy Grail. When he and his companions came to Glastonbury, they built a small church of twisted woodwork filled in with clay. Arvigus, the local king, donated the land upon which it was built. Glastonbury was chosen by Joseph because, in a dream, he was told to choose a site that was near a hill that re-sembled Mount Tabor. That hill was Glaston-bury Tor. Near the Tor is “Wirral,” where Joseph, weary from travel, struck his staff.

The staff bloomed, and came to be known as the “Glastonbury Thorn.” The thorn bush survived for centuries until it was uprooted by the Puri-tans in the 17th Century. Fortunately, a sprig from the thorn bush was saved. It still blossoms every Christmas. A cutting is sent to the Queen of England every year! The Glastonbury Thorn evokes a sense of won-der. Guides will point out the burial site of Ar-thur and Guinivere and speculate on the Grail legend and what it really means. During Christ-mastide, a thorn in bloom, may make us dream or, at least, wonder about a healing chalice and the possibility of Camelot in a world like ours! -Fr. Luczak

The Birthday of a King

Our Music Ministry will present a concert of holiday music on Sunday, January 3 at 3:00pm in the church. Our adult choir, youth choir, praise singers and cantor ensemble will provide you with an entertaining and joyous afternoon of beautiful music and a bit of laughter, too. This is a concert the whole family will enjoy. Now that the rush of preparation is over, sit back and let the peace of the Christmas season and its music surround you.

Come one, come all!

The St. Isaac Jogues Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative body that discerns the needs of the parish and advises the pastor how best to respond to those needs. Prayerfully, the council helps to empower the parish to carry out the Mission of Christ. Membership includes representatives from parish commissions, parish staff, and St. Isaac Jogues parishioners at large. Each council member is interviewed by the pastor and goes through a process of discernment and formation. The bylaws of the Council specify term limits. Three members of our Pastoral Council now need to be re-placed. If you are interested in becoming a council member, please submit your name to the SIJPPC8149 mailbox or inform one of the current members. Applicants will be required to complete a brief questionnaire. The questionnaire will be reviewed. The selection will be made with parish diversity and representation of all commissions in mind. Openings on the council are limited and not everyone who applies will be selected. Know that your interest and willingness to serve on the council are greatly appreciated.
