What an audience Jesus has in today's Gospel! "A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon." Disciples, pagans, and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak in the Sermon on the Mount. All of these people had something in common. God was someone to be bargained with, and if God liked you, you were rewarded with good

fortune. This Sunday, Jesus tells us a different story. "Woe to you who are rich ? who are filled now ? who laugh ? when all speak well of you. Blessed are you who are poor ? you who are now hungry ? when people hate you and when they exclude you and insult you." Jesus completely flips the script on what it means to be blessed by God. What he proclaims as "woe" are states of life we often strive for, and "blessed" are the

states we work hard to avoid!Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the world to come, not the typical structures of power and privilege. The word "now" appears often in these statements. Why? If you are well "now," that's beside the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing on your immortal soul. If you're struggling "now," that's not an indication that God has forgotten you or that - in light of eternity - you're worse off than someone

else. In fact, it could be an indicator that you're enduring something that will bring you to a place of greater, eternal joy in the future.

This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we reject as not blessed, and thereby inflict woe upon ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in our own lives, do we see them as opportunities to

remember God and lean on His mercy and grace?

LIVE THE LITURGYINSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Getting ahead in the world is something many see as important. Success, a comfortable life, and worldly securities are seen as what is needed to achieve happiness. Whether or not we like to admit it, these

pursuits are operative in many of our lives. As much as we want to believe in the Gospel, we also find it hard not to cling to these other things. Unconditional trust in God must be first if we are going to perceive

the kingdom of God. And while God does not want us to go out of our way to be miserable, Jesus clearly gives preference to those who are poor, hungry, weeping, marginalized, vulnerable, and despised. When

people encounter these things, they touch God. It teaches us not to get too comfortable with our riches and that there is much more to true life than the stuff we find so important.

The Second Commandment

At the beginning of the year I wrote about the first commandment. It has been a while, and I do not want to forget that series. I return now to the second commandment, you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. The Lord’s Prayer is helpful for our understanding of this commandment. We begin by praying “hallowed be thy name.” When we make that petition, we do not add to the holiness of God by our prayer. We are praying for ourselves. Specifically we are asking that how we live may be a testimony to God’s greatness and supreme holiness. God revealed himself to Moses with a mysterious name, Yhwh. Knowing someone’s name gives us a certain power. We can call out to that person by name, and that person will respond. How often do we feel at a loss because we cannot recall someone’s name? Worse is when they know ours! God’s revelation of his name does not give us power over him. God’s very name instead conveys a mystery. He is infinitely above everything, and in his presence we recognize our finiteness. It was out of respect for God that the people of Israel did not presume even to utter the name of God. “In the reading of Sacred Scripture, the revealed name (Yhwh) is replaced by the title ‘Lord’” (CCC 209). Because of the greatness of God we hold God’s name and the name of Jesus Christ with respect. How far have we come from the respectful practice of the Israelites? How often throughout the day do we hear people abuse God’s name or the name of Jesus Christ? How often are we guilty? Taking the Lord’s name in vain cheapens the name of God. It takes away from the adoration that we owe God and is a testimony against the greatness that world so needs to see and experience. One practice I like to advocate in upholding the second commandment is to go directly against our sinful inclinations to use God’s name in a profane manner. To do this we can explicitly praise God’s name throughout the day. One prayer that gives praise to God is the divine praises. I am not going to replicate the entire prayer here. We probably know it, and it can be found online. It begins “Blessed be God. Blessed be his holy name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man…” The catechism lists our Christian name under our responsibilities to the second commandment. On the day we are made holy through the waters of baptism the practice of the Church has always been to give a name of someone who has remained faithful to Jesus such as one of the saints. This saint then becomes our personal intercessor throughout our lives. Similarly it is a worthy practice to name a child after a Christian mystery or Christian virtue. Please pray for young families to realize the importance of choosing a Christian name for their children, and let’s work on changing a culture that does not value the name of God. May God bless you, Fr. David Cybulski

a letter from Fr. Bryan

Happy Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time! Are we maintaining our Christian joy? As we move through this period between Christmas and Lent it can be very easy to fall into routine and forget to be joyful. Christian joy is the center of who we are and brings to the forefront the reality that Our Lord's Passion, death, and Resurrection must be at the center of our lives. How many of us get excited about football, baseball, or hockey? Or how many of us get excited about a new movie that is coming out? We might race to get tickets to our favorite game or movie and then wait in anticipation for weeks on end until the night comes to see it. Most of us have probably been in this position before, but are we this excited about the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ? Do we thank and praise Him daily for His gift? The joy of the Gospel will focus all our energies on doing just that, praising and thanking Him in joy. At the Easter vigil, when the men and women who are baptized come out of the font, their joy is very apparent. They have just been washed clean in Jesus Christ. It is an inspiring thing to witness, the joy of the Resurrection lived out in the life of a new Christian. You can tell that they had been made new. Let us strive to always hold this in our hearts. Let us ask Our Lord Jesus Christ to give us this same joy and to make us new today. He is truly Risen and this changes everything forever. In the Risen Christ, Fr. Bryan Shackett

God our Father, you have called us to be witnesses to Jesus and have commissioned us to lead all people to encounter him. Send your Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds so that your will may be clear to us and that we may accept it. Dwell within our souls and make our hearts your own. Transform us into a band of joyful missionary disciples embracing the fruits of Synod 16 so as to share the good news of Jesus Christ in Southeast Michigan through joyful evangelization and service. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Amen. Saint Anne, pray for us.

Enter the Journey! Celebrate the Dream!“Enter the journey, Come to the song,

By God you are chosen, by name you are calledTo follow the vision, carry the cross

Enter the journey of faith as the family of God!

M. Friedmanm J. Vogt

Several weeks ago, I discovered this song by Mark Friedman and Janet Vogt. Now, I’m a BIG fan of musical lyrics. There is nothing more engaging than when words and melody speak to us! These lyrics

not only spoke to me; I felt that they jumped off the page! I am beginning this journey with you and that is a cause to celebrate!

Last Sunday I was privileged to join our parish journey at the Dynamic Parish Dream Event. As I prayed about our journey, I thought about the journey that I am embarking on with you; it is one of dreams. I

hear and see your faith expressed in both I word and song. I am humbled and inspired, and I am grateful to be here.

I know that I have dreams for our music program to grow and serve the needs of our parish members of

all ages. But as one small aspect in our parish life, my dreams can only come to fruition, if they mirror the wants and needs of the people of St. Isaac Jogues. Please help me to discover our musical dreams as

we praise God together. I hope that you will “follow the vision and carry the cross, “ for dreams can only develop through prayer, people, and hard work, too.

Thank you for letting me be part of St. Isaac Jogues’ journey of faith as a family of God, especially

through sung prayer. May we walk in His light and love, ~Carole [email protected]

In today’s gospel, Jesus says “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.  Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you

will laugh.” It is these that we of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society serve in his name. Thank you for your donations that make that possible.

The pantry needs: Peanut Butter, jelly, tuna, pasta, spaghetti sauce, diced tomatoes, ravioli, soups,

macaroni and cheese plus toilet paper. Your help is greatly appreciated.

If you or someone you know needs help or if you would like to join us in our mission, please call 586-778-5100 ext 107 or (1-877-788-4623).

Last week I wrote about the Entrance Procession of the Mass. This time I want to go to the next step. After the procession, when servers, deacons, and the priest reach the sanctuary, they bow before the altar or kneel if the Blessed Sacrament is present in the tabernacle in the sanctuary. Then the deacon and priest go to kiss the altar. Next, if incense is used, the priest with the assistance of the deacon or another minister go around the altar and incense it. The priest also incenses the cross, and relics or holy images connected with the celebration of the day.   After this, the priest and deacon go to presider chair, and servers go to their places. Mass starts with signs of reverence to God. We all come to His holy presence. Like in the Jewish temple, they had separated a sacred area for the altar, which was reserved only for consecrated people, the same is happening now. God wants us to be close to Him, but still, He reserves this space just for those chosen for His ministry. It enables the celebration to be in order and reverence necessary to worship God and receive grace from Him. A deep bow or genuflection are signs of respect, which are reserved only for God and in special occasions for the bishop and priest. Every time we come to the church, and when we see the tabernacle or exposed Blessed Sacrament we should genuflect. If there is no tabernacle in the sanctuary, we should bow before the altar. Of course, if someone cannot do it because of health or age, it is acceptable to do any sign of respect to the altar or tabernacle. Then is one of the most beautiful moments of the Mass, when the priest kisses the altar. It is a symbol of adoration. Ad os (to mouth in Latin) - these two words are the source of the Latin and then English word - adoratio/adoration. To adore means to be close, to focus only on the person we want to worship. Adoration is the best type of prayer because we finally forget about ourselves and focus on God and only on him. When the priest kisses the altar, it symbolizes the Bride - Church kissing her Groom - Christ because the altar is a type of Christ. Incense has two meanings. First, we use it as a sign of respect and worship; we incense only holy things in which we believe God is present: Blessed Sacrament, the altar, Book of Gospel, sacred images, relics of saints, the priest, and holy people gathered for the celebration of the liturgy.  Second, the incense's smoke symbolizes our prayers and sacrifices going up to heaven in front of God's presence.Next time we start from the sign of the cross.
