ABOUT SAINT IGNATIUS HIGH SCHOOL President : Fr. William Murphy S.J.
Principal: Mr. Peter Corrigan, Jr, '69
The school was opened on September 6, 1886, by German Jesuits from Buffalo,
New York, who responded to an invitation from Bishop Richard Gilmour to provide advanced
schooling for Cleveland's Catholic young men. Known as Saint Ignatius College, it was
modeled after the German Gymnasium and French Lycee. Students were admitted after six
years of grammar school and received a bachelor’s degree after a six-year course of studies.
There was no distinction between high school and college. The first A.B. degrees were
conferred in 1894.
In 1902 high school and college departments were established, and the high school program was
extended to four years. In 1923 the college department changed its name to John Carroll
University and in 1935 was moved into new buildings in University Heights. Saint Ignatius
High School remained at the original location.

Alma Mater Saint Ignatius Fight Song
Our famed alma mater graces
Every shrine within our hearts
With her unforgotten faces
And the faith that she imparts.
Years in passing cannot sever
Ties of new days from the old.
We're Ignatius men forever,
As we hail the blue and gold.
On! Ignatius with your gold and blue,
You're the best team that we ever knew;
You've got what it takes to win this game,
Honor to your name! RAH! RAH! RAH!
Fight, you Wildcats of Ignatius High!
(Opponent)'s team can bid this game good-bye;
On the old beam now, you blue and gold team now,
And fight to victory!

2009 Varsity Coaches
Chuck Kyle ‘69 - Head Football Coach
Record: 262-58-1
Saint Ignatius English Teacher
John Carroll University ‘74
Coaching Style and Notes:
-Has won 262 games, including 54 OHSAA playoff wins. He has won 10
OHSAA state championships in 26 years of high school coaching.
-Led Team USA to a gold medal in their first appearance in the Junior
Football World Championships in the summer of 2009.
-Record of 54-11 (.831) in Ohio State Playoff Games.
-In 1989 and 1993, Kyle was recognized as National Coach of the Year by USA Today and
coached in the East-West All-Star Game in 1989.
-He received the Rossing Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1987.
-While at Saint Ignatius High School, he was an honor student and tailback during the program’s
1968 undefeated season before receiving his high school diploma in 1969. Kyle then enrolled at
Xavier University in Cincinnati for one year before transferring to John Carroll University.
Nick Restifo- Offensive Coordinator
Saint Ignatius Spanish Teacher
John Carroll University ‘74
Coaching Style and Notes: Runs a pro style offense that relies on a passer who
is proficient with the reads throughout the playbook. The Restifo offense has
commonly used a strong-armed pocket passer, but other passers have been
successful as well under center. His offense has produced both 1,000-yard
rushers, and 3,000-yard passers.
Dan Corrigan ’78- Defensive Coordinator
Saint Ignatius History Teacher
Princeton ‘82
Coaching Style and Notes: Runs a swarming 3-5 stack defense. His blitzing
schemes create pressure on opposing quarterbacks while relying on both zone
and man coverage from his defensive backs. His outside linebackers tend to
be athletic, as they usually bring the most pressure in this defense. He also
has moved players from the 3-5, down to the 4-3 and 4-4 defenses depending
on his player’s abilities. Stunt packages are a large part of the defense’s
strategy, and it requires the team to keep as many men in the box while maintaining sufficient
secondary coverage.

Overall: 14-1

2008 Season in Review Team: 2008 was considered a return to prominence for the St. Ignatius Wildcats. They completed their
championship campaign against a talented Elder Panthers team at Fawcett Stadium, securing their tenth
state championship. The Cats played a physical style on defense and utilized a balanced offensive attack
that has become a hallmark of St. Ignatius football over the years to garner their first crown since 2001.
The 2008 campaign ended with the Wildcats riding a 14 game winning streak (14-1).
OFFENSE: Offensively senior quarterback Andrew Holland was able to open up the field with 167
completions in 285 attempts. Holland threw for 2,270 yards and 28 touchdowns as Cats’ offensive
coordinator Nick Restifo used a potent passing game to open up the ground for senior tailback Mike
Anter. Anter led the Wildcats in rushing, totaling 964 by season’s end with ten touchdowns as the team’s
primary rushing option. Behind him were change of pace back Kevin Johnson (302 yards, 4 touchdowns)
and short yardage back Pat Hinkel (10 attempts, 8 touchdowns.) Receivers Connor Ryan and Joey Parris
gave Saint Ignatius options on the outside to throw to. Ryan totaled 999 yards and 14 touchdowns to lead
the Wildcats in receiving yards. Parris, meanwhile, caught 54 passes for 906 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Restifo was able to create mismatches with junior tight end Brendan Carrozonni and senior slot back
Frank DeSico. DeSico, a special teams standout, used his incredible speed to put up 407 receiving yards.
Carrozonni was able to block well for the running game but also had the athleticism to catch 16 passes for
226 yards. An all-senior offensive line was banged up for much of the year, but their overall depth was
showcased all the way to the state championship behind the leadership of Bryan Connolly, Jerod Kedzior,
Adam Gordon, Stewart Ross, Frank Whitaker, and Keith Posendek.
DEFENSE: Defensively the Wildcats were able to hold opponents to just 127 points (in fifteen games) as
they played a hard-nosed physical style reminiscent of the many great defenses of the program’s past.
High expectations were placed on the secondary of the 2008 unit, but they backed up those expectations
with great play. The team allowed 1,719 passing yards and just 1,417 rushing yards on their way to the
state title. Safeties Pat Hinkel and Dan Fox were able to play sideline to sideline because of the great
corners on the outside. Hinkel finished with 133 tackles and led the team in interceptions, as Fox was able
to use his big play ability to intercept 5 passes. Also playing from the secondary were Sean Fisher, Sean
Fitzgerald, Tommy Hunt, Kevin Hopkins, Steve Siemborski, Anthony Luvison and Kory Gillisse. Fisher
finished with 135 tackles, good for second on team. This secondary proved to be nearly unstoppable
swarming to the ball and causing nightmares for opposing quarterbacks (40.0 QB rating against). Junior
outside linebacker Scott McVey led the linebacking core with 17 sacks. McVey had 140 tackles while on
a constant double team. Seamus Siefring found his place in the middle totaling 143 tackles (led the team)
and 7 sacks. Jake Ryan provided a solid presence at linebacker with 49 tackles for the Cats. Kolin
11
Sullivan rounded out the linebacking core with 120 tackles to his credit. The defensive line was anchored
by senior nose tackle Ryan Carr. Carr was a leader on a consistent line that held its own against the state’s
biggest offensive fronts. Carr had 62 tackles and sacked the opposing quarterback 8.5 times. He made 17
tackles behind the line for the Cats last year. Also on the line the Cats benefitted from the consistent play
of Gerry Ramella, Ted Kraft, Pat Dowd, as they held down both ends of the defensive front.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Special teams were a major part of the Cats return to
the state championship game. Frank DeSico scampered for 213 kickoff
return yards and 719 punt return yards as he scored 3 special team
touchdowns. Opponents were held to just a 3.2 yard average on their punt
returns and on kick returns opponents faired little better averaging just 19
yards per return. Seamus Hennessey was 9-13 in field goals and 51-60 in
extra points for a total of 78 points from the senior place kicker. Jesse
Franklin was used on 83 kickoffs for an average kick of 51.2 yards. He also
was useful on extra points, proving to be an accurate 8-8 on the PAT. Mark
Myers (pictured) was the teams starting punter for most of the year (though
Pat Hinkel did fill in due to injury for two weeks) kicking 51 times for a
35.5 yard average. He placed 8 kicks inside the 20-yard line.

Teammates Scott McVey (40), Pat Hinkel (25), and Dan Fox (3)
carried the Wildcat defense to its tenth title. The three combined
for over 200 tackles, 19 sacks, and 13 interceptions in 2008.
Wildcat wideout Joey Parris
shows how elusive he can be in
the open field in a playoff win
against North Canton Hoover.
Parris caught 54 passes for 906
yards. The Air Force recruit
pulled in 10 touchdowns from
quarterback Andrew Holland
with the help of fellow wide
receiver Connor Ryan. The
contrasting styles of the two
senior stars gave the Cats a
brilliant passing game in 2008.

Mark Myers, who returns this
year as the team’s starting
quarterback and punter, gave the
Cats defense plenty of field to
work with. Opponents were
pinned inside the 20-yard line 8
times last year.
Kevin Johnson (24) played
running back and corner back last
year. Johnson ran for a season
high 127 yards against Massillon
Washington last year. Johnson is
entering his third season on the
varsity squad, and looks to play
both ways again this year.
