M I S S I O N S T A T E M E N T St. George Parish in Waimanalo is a Community of many diverse people
joined together to proclaim God’s Word in Holy Scripture by celebrating the Liturgy
and building a Faith Community. Uniquely embraced by the majestic
Koolau and rolling seas we strive to be a Welcoming Parish and commit ourselves
to serve the people of God through Outreach, Unity and Renewal.
God loves everyone. He shows no partiality, but He is merciful and forgiving to all. Christ has commanded us to love each other as He Himself has loved us. Let us ask for God’s powerful grace which will enable us to fulfill His high command.
TODAY’S READINGS
1st Reading: Acts 10: 25-26, 34-35, 44-48 - The first Christians were Jews. They were afflicted with many prejudices of their ancestors. Today’s first reading tells of the first non-Jewish convert to Christianity. If God loves everyone without partiality, we must also be universal in our respect and reverence of each other.
2nd Reading: 1 John 4: 7-10 - Some people in the primitive Church thought that they had a higher kind of knowledge of God than anyone else. They thought they were closer to God because of their superior knowledge and they looked down on those who were not “in the know.” John wrote today’s epistle to combat this error: Love of God is higher than knowledge; knowledge without love is nothing; love is the gift of God that makes a person Christ-like.
Gospel: John 15: 9-17 - As the Father sent the Son, so the Son sends us. As the Son shows the Father’s love, so we must show the love of the Son. We are not slaves but friends of Christ, sharing His mission of love.

Today’s Reflection: Overcoming Our Prejudices It’s not often we’re caught in our prejudices. My moment of
reckoning came with the birth of my second daughter. My hospital
roommate was a teenager giving birth to her third child. My husband
and I were having trouble making ends meet, and even with
insurance we’d still have hospital bills to pay.
I resented the free care my roommate was receiving. Why can’t you
be more responsible? I thought. Because of people like you, my
hospital bills are higher.
Reflecting back, I’m ashamed of my attitude. I held the assumption that I had a “right” to this fine hospital
because I was working, could pay bills, and had insurance. Would I deny my roommate’s child the level of
care I wanted for my own?
The early Church wrestled with that type of question. Should Gentiles be admitted to the Christian
community? They were considered unclean, and any Jew who touched them or ate with them would be made
unclean.
In the encounter with Cornelius, Peter comes to realize that there is no clean or unclean when it comes to
people. God shows no partiality. The Holy Spirit makes a convincing argument to the believers by falling on
the Gentiles even before they’re baptized.
We often decide, out loud or in our thoughts, who is worthy of our care or God’s. But Jesus commanded us to
love one another and to dwell in love, because God is love.
It’s our prejudice that gets in the way.

Choose Life
Researchers in four states–TX, WA, CA, and NY– found they could order abortion pills on the internet to be shipped to the U.S. They were able to order 22 products from 18 different websites. None of the suppliers
required a prescription or any relevant medical information, in spite of the fact that certain physical conditions render use of the drugs ineffective or dangerous to women. Pills were shipped without any instructions on use, even though the pills are supposed to be taken in certain amounts and in a certain order. A recent article in a pro-abortion magazine reveals how the abortion establishment not only defends but promotes the online sales of these drugs as part of their long-term plans for expanding the use of the abortion pill in the United States.
