The Wisdom of the Cross
The Book of Wisdom is attributed to King Solomon,
son of David. Solomon asked God for the gift of wisdom
rather than longevity or power. To be a good ruler, he
desired to know the truth, to have depth and
understanding. He knew this was the strongest
foundation a ruler could have. Even if he were a king
appointed by God, he would one day have to render an
account at his own judgment.
The Roman Emperor Constantine also learned this
truth. The fresco
here is dedicated to
the moment of his
vision of the cross.
The historians
Eusebius of
Caesarea and
Lactantius tell us of
how— ahead of the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in which
Constantine would attack Maxentius to reunite the empire
under himself—he had a vision of a cross in the heavens
and heard these words: “In this sign, you will conquer.”
Constantine was not a Christian, yet he had this sign
emblazoned on the breastplates and shields of his
soldiers. They won that battle against great odds.
Archeologists have uncovered shields, helmets,
breastplates, and coins with this symbol, attesting to the
truth of his vision.
Eventually Constantine, the most powerful figure in the
world, was baptized a Catholic and built several large
churches in Rome, including St. Peter’s Basilica. This
was not to his political advantage, and the risk he took in
promoting the faith showed the sincerity of his
conversion. He understood the wisdom of the cross, and
it was worth selling all to follow Jesus and receive the
treasure of eternal life.

WORDS OF WISDOM
The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today’s first
reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like
the word of God, carries a message of consolation as
well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews
tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of
God, is “sharper than any two-edged sword.” We cannot
shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that
has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus,
the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has
strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man
who comes to him seeking answers to his most
profound questions. Just when the young man thought
he had done enough to fulfill God’s commands, more
was asked of him. This is no less true for us.

Dinner Prep volunteers needed for
SGG’s Family Promise ministry,
supporting local host congregations that
provide shelter
to homeless families
Family Promise is an interfaith non-profit organization
committed to helping homeless families achieve lasting
independence. They help families accomplish this by
providing shelter, meals and support services for them,
and by offering programs designed to address the
underlying causes of homelessness. Their promise is to
link those in need with those who want to help. Those
who benefit from the efforts of Family Promise are
considered guests.
Saint Gregory the Great participates in the network of
Family Promise by being a support congregation,
providing additional volunteers to augment existing
teams in the facilities of 2 specific host congregations:
Grace Coastal Church
(on Hwy 170, about 1.3 miles north of 278)
Church of the Palms
(on Hwy 170, just south of Argent Blvd intersection)
How can you help?
Right now we are looking for volunteers to cover 1
dinner shift every 8 weeks at one of our host
churches. The shift at the host church runs from 5:30
– 8:00 PM in the evening, and involves preparing a
dinner for 8-12 people at home, then bringing it to the
host church in microwave-safe cookware for re-
heating. The dinner is then served buffet-style, with
the dinner hosts dining with the guests and offering
fellowship and support where needed. Left-overs are
brought home with the dinner hosts.
Two hosts are needed for each dinner shift.
Orientation will be provided.
We invite you to respond to Jesus’ message in
Matthew 25:31-46 when Our Lord said:
“. . . Whatever you do for even these least brothers of
mine, you do for me. . .”
We invite you to join 50 of your fellow parishioners
who now serve as evening dinner hosts, and overnight
hosts.

YOUTH MINISTRY
SGGCC is streamlining communications with Flocknote – an exciting form of communication that will allow our
church and church ministries to connect with the “flock” at great ease via text and email. One simple text and/or

Not only can Flocknote reach parishioners as a whole, but Ministry Leaders can contact their “flocks” as well.
Flocknote will allow you as an individual to select which groups you want to hear from. Our current list of ministries
signed up to use Flocknote in the near future include:
• Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP)
• Greeter Ministry
• Music Ministry (Cherubs, Handbells, Joyful Singers & Ringers, Schola Cantorum, SGG Chorale, Teen/
Young Adult Choir)
• Perpetual Adoration Society
• Prayer Shawl Ministry
• Rosary Makers
• Ushers
• Women of SGG
• Young Adult Ministry
• Young Men’s Spirituality
• Youth Ministry (Elementary YM, Junior High YM, High School YM)
SGG is planning to launch Flocknote for our church family during “Flocknote Sign-Up Weekend”, October 27-28.
