Apocalypse, Catharsis, or Further Continuance?

According to prophecies coming from left and right, 2012 was supposed to be the year of the end of the world, as we know it. But we, Christians, Catholics, do not care about prophecies. We are not intimidated by pseudo information or catastrophic movies that reach us. “But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Mark 13:32) I started with a quote from the end of today's Gospel because these are the most impor-tant words. They are like a buffer of information that attacks us. The texts about the Apocalypse, about catharsis, are to arouse fear of the future in us. Let us not go crazy, we have our faith, our Christian consciousness, and although we often wonder how it will be after our descent from the earthly pit after this earthly pilgrimage, faith and the Scriptures explain this to us sufficiently. The time of earthly life is the time of trial, a time for fulfilling the task that God has set for us. A personal, individual task, not entrusted to any other person. It is worth it, maybe even necessary, for us to consider how our life goes. And our future life? Nobody knows but only one man who as God de-scended to Earth, lived among people, showed himself to his disciples after death to prove that the future really exists for us after a short period of wandering the earth. The Prophet Daniel announces that “And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlast-ing life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” (Daniel 12:2) So Daniel gives us information: How our life is, such is our resurrection, how our faith is, such is our future. The Liturgy of the Word also invites us to a good life and deep faith, which today, when the liturgical year is coming to an end, presents a great eschatological event - the glorious return of Christ and resurrection in the last days. “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified…Where there is forgive-ness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.” (Hebrews 10:14, 18). Our earthly time is given to us to read God's intentions for us and to not to fail our Father’s and Creator's hopes, that is, to fulfill his will faithfully and thereby achieve one’s own happiness. And although the time of earthly life in relation to eternity is a short time filled with hard work, a time of carrying the cross, suffering and renunciations, it is He who is the path to eternal glory. At the same time, Christ himself gives us an impor-tant message: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the an-gels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Mark 13:31-32) By giving us hope for eternal life, he also warns us to be vigilant and to do what God has commanded us.

Queen Mother of Mercy, please intercede for us with Your Son, pray for us sinners now and in the hour of our death. Through Christ, with Christ and in Christ.

Apokalipsa, Katharsis, czy dalsze trwanie?

Według przepowiedni ogłaszanych z prawa i lewa rok 2012 to miało być rok końca świata, jaki znamy. Ale przecież my, chrześcijanie, katolicy, nie dbamy o przepowiednie. Nie dajemy się zastraszyć pseudoinformacjami, filmami katastroficznymi, czy kartkami, które do nas docierają. „Lecz o dniu owym lub godzinie nikt nie wie, ani aniołowie w niebie, ani Syn, tylko Ojciec.” (Mk 13,32). Zacząłem cytatem z końca dzisiejszej Ewangelii, bo to najważniejsze słowa, jakby bufor informacji, które nas atakują. Teksty o Apokalipsie, o Katharsis, mają wzbudzić w nas lęk przed przyszłością. Nie dajmy się zwariować, mamy naszą wiarę, naszą świadomość chrześcijańską i chociaż zastanawiamy się niejednokrotnie, jak to będzie po naszym zejściu z ziemskiego padołu, po zakończeniu tej ziemskiej pielgrzymki, to jednak wiara i Pismo Święte dostatecznie nam to wyjaśniają. Czas życia ziemskiego to czas próby, czas na spełnienie zadania, które Bóg nam wyznaczył, zadania osobistego, indywidualnego, nie powierzonego żadnemu innemu człowiekowi. Warto więc, a może nawet trzeba, abyśmy rozważyli, jak przebiega nasze życie. A nasze przyszłe życie? Tego nie wie nikt poza jednym jedynym Człowiekiem, który jako Bóg zstąpił na ziemski padół, żył pośród ludzi, po śmierci ukazywał się swoim uczniom, by udowodnić, iż rzeczywiście istnieje dla nas przyszłość po krótkim okresie wędrówki po ziemi. Prorok Daniel ogłasza, że „Wielu zaś, co posnęli w prochu ziemi, zbudzi się: jedni do wiecznego życia, drudzy ku hańbie, ku wiecznej odrazie.” (Dn 12, 2). A zatem podaje nam informację: jakie nasze życie, takie zmartwychwstanie, jaka nasza wiara, taka nasza przyszłość. Do dobrego życia i głębokiej wiary wzywa nas też Liturgia Słowa, która teraz, gdy rok liturgiczny dobiega końca, w czytaniach na dzień dzisiejszy przedstawia wielkie wydarzenie eschatologiczne – chwalebny powrót Chrystusa i zmartwychwstanie w czasach ostatecznych. „Jedną bowiem ofiarą udoskonalił na wieki tych, którzy są uświęcani. … Gdzie zaś jest ich odpuszczenie, tam już więcej nie zachodzi potrzeba ofiary za grzechy.” (Hbr 10, 14,18). Czas życia ziemskiego jest nam dany po to, aby odczytać Boże zamiary wobec nas i nie zawieść nadziei naszego Ojca i Stwórcy, czyli spełniać wiernie Jego wolę, a tym samym osiągnąć własne szczęście. I choć czas życia ziemskiego w stosunku do wieczności jest czasem krótkim, wypełnionym pracą, trudem, niesieniem krzyża, cierpieniami i wyrzeczeniami, to właśnie on jest drogą do chwały wiecznej. Równocześnie Chrystus sam przekazuje nam jakże ważną wiadomość: „Niebo i ziemia przeminą, ale słowa moje nie przeminą. Lecz o dniu owym lub godzinie nikt nie wie, ani aniołowie w niebie, ani Syn, tylko Ojciec.” (Mk 13, 31-32). Dając nam nadzieję na życie wieczne, jednocześnie przestrzega nas, byśmy byli czujni i realizowali to, co nam Bóg przykazał.

Królowo, Matko Miłosierdzia, prosimy, wstawiaj się za nami u Syna Twego, módl się za nami grzesznymi teraz i w godzinę naszej śmierci. Przez Chrystusa, z Chrystusem i w Chrystusie.

At that time your people shall escape,

"Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall

awake;

some shall live forever,

others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace.

"But the wise shall shine brightly

like the splendor of the firmament,

and those who lead the many to justice

shall be like the stars forever."

SECOND READING: HEBREWS 10:11-14, 18

Brothers and sisters:

Every priest stands daily at his ministry,

offering frequently those same sacrifices

that can never take away sins.

But this one offered one sacrifice for sins,

and took his seat forever at the right hand of God;

now he waits until his enemies are made his footstool.

For by one offering

he has made perfect forever those who are being

consecrated.

Where there is forgiveness of these,

there is no longer offering for sin.

GOSPEL: MARK 13:24-32 Jesus said to his disciples:

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the “dwelling place of the Holy Spirit,” and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one’s “birthday to life,” the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Chris-tians were allowed to build places for worship, they relo-cated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. —Rev. Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time As we near the end of the Liturgical Year, we have more “end time” readings. On the Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear about being ready for the end of time. “In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that he is near, at the gates.” It is the good news that we can stay alert and will be ready when it is our time to recognize the Lord’s coming in our own life’s chal-lenges today. Wednesday is the Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thurday in the U.S. is Thanksgiving Day with its own readings. For the rest of the world, we remember Saint Cecilia, virgin and martyr. Saturday is the Memorial of the Vietnamese Saint Andrew Düng-Lac, priest and martyr, and his companions, martyrs. During these last two weeks of Ordinary Time, the first reading is from the Book of Revelation, with its mystic imagery. Written for readers who were familiar with apocalyptic writings, the writings send a hidden message of salvation to the earliest communities of Christians, and to us. Luke's Gospel continues with the story of the blind man who hails him, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!” An unpopular tax collector, Zacchaeus, climbs a tree to get a glimpse of Jesus and is given personal recognition as Jesus says, “Zacchaeus, today I must stay at your house.” Luke's version of the parable of the talents offers praise for the servant who has invested the ten coins and earned another ten. “Well done, good servant! You have been faithful in this very small matter; take charge of ten cities.” In Jerusa-lem, Jesus weeps over the city, foreseeing the destruction that is coming, “because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.” Jesus drives out the sellers from the temple while the chief priests plot against him. Religious leaders try to trap him with a trick question about a woman who marries seven brothers but Jesus refutes them. On the Thirty-Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time, we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. In the first reading from the Book of Daniel, we read of a vision he has of “one like a Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven.” In John’s Gospel Jesus tells Pilate, “You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth lis-tens to my voice.”

Daily Prayer This Week Making changes in our lives and the fear of making those changes are both themes in this week's gospels. Zacchaeus boldly reforms his life after he allows Jesus into it. The servant who is given a gold coin hides it in a handkerchief because he is afraid of his master. He has a chance to be given responsibilities but his fear keeps him from doing anything. We are often afraid when we consider making a change in our lives. We can see habits that are not healthy, a benign neglect of those we love and patterns that are deeply set in our lives. We may know deep down that we want to change them but we don't have the confidence to believe we can do it. This week we are invited by Jesus to know that while we can't make those changes alone, we can if we allow Jesus to be with us in them. Where do we start? With a small prayer. In those tiny pockets of time during our week, when we travel, ride to work, do dishes or even in the shower, we can take these reflective moments to ask for help. Just as Jesus asked the blind man, “What do you want me to do for you?” he is asking us the same question. What do we want Jesus to do for us? Where do we want to make changes in the patterns of our lives? What changes are we afraid to make? Dear Jesus, I ask for your help. Heal my fears. You have asked how you can help me and I am afraid to answer. I know what changes need to be made in my life but it seems overwhelming. Help me to open my heart to what you are asking - and to what I know I need. Be with me when I don't always know how to live in these new patterns and give me the humility to keep asking you for help over and over. Let me feel your presence in my life and that will give me the strength and courage I need to live my life more faithfully.
