LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR 2018 Ash Wednesday and Good Friday: Days of Fast and Abstinence. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine inclusive are bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day Ash Wednesday and All Fridays in Lent: Days of Abstinence. All Catholics who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to fast. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are recommended. Easter Duty Obligation: After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist,

Catholics are bound by the obligation of receiving

Communion at least once a year. This precept should be

fulfilled during the Easter Season. Catholics are also bound

to confess serious (mortal) sins at least once a year, but this

is not limited to the Lenten/Easter Season.

Grace and Peace to my Parish Family!

The season of Lent is almost upon us; This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. As we are prepare to draw more closely to the Lord during this time of spiritual penance, healing and renewal, let us see the example set for us in today’s readings. In our first reading, from the Book of Leviticus, the Lord God directs the Israelites, through Moses, that those people afflicted with the deadly and infectious disease of leprosy must dwell apart from the others and announce that they are “unclean.” This is to protect the rest of the community from contracting the disease. Those inflicted must live on the outskirts of society, no longer a part of it. They will continue to do so until they heal or, most likely, die. Today’s Gospel continues this theme. It focuses on a leper who believes that Jesus can heal him. Jesus rewards his faith by granting him the healing. He reaches out and touches the leper (something that no one else would dare to do), and the man is cleansed. Jesus then instructs him to go to the priests to con-firm his healing, as instructed by Moses in Leviticus, but to tell no one else. The former leper, however, rejoicing, tells everyone about his miraculous healing received from Jesus. The result is that the former leper is able to live in society freely again. Jesus, however, is now inundated by people who want to see miracles. He must live apart from society, outside in the deserted places. In a way, Jesus himself now lives the life of the leper he had healed. He takes up the burden that he removed from the former leper. Like Jesus, we may take up others’ burdens in order to bring healing. As Lent approaches, there are many penances that we may offer up to the Lord. Some people “sacrifice” for Lent, like giving up cigarettes, desserts or things we enjoy. Others “give of themselves” by embracing people in need, or assisting at hospitals and charities. Still others take up holy practices, such as attending Weekday Mass, praying the Rosary and attending the Stations of the Cross. In all of these methods, the Lord will greatly bless and reward your efforts. I have one additional “penance” I would like to suggest. It is a “giving up” and a “gift of self” and a “holy practice”, all in one. It is known as the Heroic Act. St Gertrude the Great gave this gift for the benefit of all the Holy Souls in Purgatory. She prayed: “O Holy and Adorable Trinity, desiring to cooperate in the deliverance of the holy souls in purgato-ry, and to testify to my devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, I secede and renounce, in behalf of the holy souls, all the satisfactory value of all my works during life, and all the suffrages which may be given to me after my death, consigning them entirely into the hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that she may apply them according to her good pleasure to the souls of the faithful departed, whom she desires to deliver from their sufferings. Deign, O my God, to accept and bless this offering I make to you at this moment. Amen.” This Lent, while cleansing our own souls and caring for others, let us not forget the Holy Souls in Purga-tory. At the very least, let us be sure to aid those for whom we are most responsible: Family members, friends and benefactors. In assisting those who have gone before, we will grow quickly closer to God, and Souls will enter the Kingdom, in purity and joy, forever.

Blessings and Peace,

Fr. Kevin Thompson

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

LENT SCHEDULE

Friday February 16th @ 8pm Presentation of Journey Cross and Crucifixion

@ St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

The Journey, Cross and Crucifixion is a journey back through time. It is an opportunity to walk with Christ and become one with Him and the people who walked with Him. For many who have shared the Journey it is almost as if it were happening now for the first time. The music, narration, dialogue and poignant silences all add to the power of this prayerful meditation. To be part of The Journey, Cross, and Crucifixion is to experience the complete and utter frustration devas-tation of Mary, the frustration of Simon, the loneli-ness and desolation of John, Pilate’s struggle between justice and expediency and the excruciating pain and degradation Jesus suffered on the way to Calvary and His ultimate death on the Cross.
