Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks

to God?” Luke 17:17-18

Happy Thanksgiving this week! Though Thanksgiving Day is not spe-cifically a Catholic holy day, it certainly goes hand in hand with our life of faith. Spiritually speaking, we all know that gratitude is central to the Gospel message. Thanksgiving Day presents us with the per-fect opportunity to look at this particular aspect of our faith. We are called to be eternally and deeply grateful. How grateful to God are you? We all struggle in various ways with gratitude. It’s fair to say that we will never be grateful enough until we are perfected in Heav-en. But, for now, it’s important to look at gratitude and to try to let it increase in our souls. First, we will never be grateful unless we see clearly all that God has done for us. It’s so easy in life to focus in on all the struggles we face and, as a result, to get down, depressed, frustrated and even angry at times. What’s far more challenging is to look beyond the crosses and bur-dens we face each day to see the abundance of grace and mercy giv-en to us by our Lord. Unless we see that mercy and grace, we will struggle greatly with authentic gratitude. So on this Thanksgiving Day, reflect upon this simple question: Do I see all God has done for me? Do I see His abundance of mercy alive in my life? The Gospel passage above reveals that Jesus healed ten lepers, but only one of the ten returned in gratitude. Are you like one of the nine who failed in gratitude? If so, you most likely struggle with seeing all the true and abundant blessings from God. If you can humbly admit you struggle with total gratitude, you will have taken the first step to seeing more clearly and the first step to fostering the deeper gratitude you ought to have. Being grateful means you see the truth clearly. Be open to that truth and God will change your life as He fills you with joy!

A Gratitude Examen

Gratitude is one of the greatest spiritual practices. It opens our minds, calms our hearts, and rids bitterness of it’s power. The “examen” is a spiritu-al practice to reflect on how we have responded to God’s work in our lives. This Thanksgiving, consider your own reasons for thankfulness!

What Gifts have You given me?

How have I Received love from others?

How is grace at work in Aspects of my life story?

Do I Trust You to continue to bless me?

Where have I missed Your movements?

Have I used my Talents at the service of other?

Do I see a purpose for my life Underway?

How can I have the Discipline to thank You daily?

Help me give Everything back to You!

St. Edward, pray for us. Treu in Christus, faithfully in Christ, Fr. Rod

Sponsors Still Needed

St. Edward Church has committed to sponsoring Abby Johnson to speak at the Ashland Pregnancy Center’s Annual Fundraiser and is looking for donors to offset the cost of bringing this incredible prolife advocate to our community. Please contact Fr. Rod or Max Watson if you are able to contribute. Abby Johnson is an American anti-abortion activist who previ-ously worked at Planned Parenthood as a clinic director, but re-signed in October 2009. She resigned after watching an abortion on ultrasound, Her memoir, Unplanned, was made into the 2019 movie of the same name. Thank you for prayerfully considering supporting this initia-tive!

The Christmas Giving Tree

Last year, because of your generosity, St. Ed-

ward Parish donated many items to Associat-

ed Charities for the children of the Ashland

community. These items included toys,

games, books, sports balls, hand crafted

items and toiletries. The Christmas Giving

Tree has become a St. Edward Parish and

Knights of Columbus Christmas season tradi-

tion. The Christmas Giving tree will be dis-

played at all Masses beginning on the Friday

after Thanksgiving. If you wish to partici-

pate, any and all gifts for infants through

teenagers are appreciated. If you are looking

for ideas, please take an ornament from the

tree. There will be a gift suggestion on the

reverse side. Please return the ornament and

your gift during the first two weekends in

December so that they may be distributed in

time for Christmas. The gifts should not be

wrapped. We thank you in advance for your

generosity.

The Knights of Columbus is open to all Catholic men. Knights participate in any of our charitable pro-

grams or you could help us find new ways to serve the Ashland area. Please consider joining us.

Do you have a friend, neighbor, co-worker, or rel-ative who has been struggling with the loss of a

loved one, loneliness, cancer, a layoff, relocation, divorce, a spiritual crisis, recuperation, single

parenthood, or any of countless other life chal-lenges?

Our Stephen Ministers can provide them with the

focused care, encouragement, and support they need to make it through the crisis.

If you know of someone who is hurting, we can set them up to speak with one of our Stephen Leaders:

Ann Jacobs, Ray Jacobs, Len Leber. They can talk with you about how we can connect the person you know

with one of our Stephen Ministers. It’s a great way for you to show how much you care!

To arrange for speaking with a Stephen Leader, contact Ann Jacobs at 567-203-7494 or email: [email protected]
