Fr. Don’s Message

Some of you may have seen an article in the paper or seen it on your phones or computer, a story about the fact that priests who have been accused of abuse of children after they are dead are not included on our archdiocesan lists of those who have abused children. The story started with a deacon who says he was abused by a priest many years ago, and wants to have this priest’s name included on our website list of priests who have abused children or young people, even though that priest is dead. While I think we can all agree with his sentiments, and the sentiments of many others who are in similar circumstances, we also have to look at some of the issues that are involved. The most obvious issue is that the priest (or anyone else) in this situ-ation has no way to defend himself against the charge as he is no long-er living. One of our rights (both human and civil) is that we have a right to defend ourselves when we are accused of something. Even the state will not investigate an abuse case in which the person accused has died, simply because there is no way to get both sides of a story. This is not to say that the accusation is credible or not, it is just to say that a balanced judgment cannot be made. It is truly unfortunate for those who have been abused that they have no way to prove their case. It would also be unjust to defame someone who is innocent after their death. Not just the church, but other insti-tutions like schools, sport teams, and others, are looking for just ways to make an accusation known, but also protect someone who may be innocent. We need to pray for wisdom for all those involved to arrive at a just solution and for healing to take place for those who have been abused.

Puede ser que algunos de ustedes hayan visto un artículo en el periódico o en sus teléfonos o computadora, acerca de que los sacerdotes que han sido acusados de abusar a niños no son incluídos, después de que han muerto, en nuestras listas arquidiocesanas las cuales indican esos nom-bres. El artículo comenzó con un diácono que dice haber sido abusado por un sacerdote hace muchos años y que quiere que el nombre de ese sacer-dote sea incluído en la lista de nuestra página web, no obstante ese sacer-dote ya ha muerto. Si bien pienso que todos podemos estar de acuerdo con sus sentimientos, y los sentimientos de muchos otros en similares situa-ciones, también tenemos que ver que circunstancias están envueltas. El punto más obvio es que el sacerdote (o cualquier otra persona) en esta situación no tiene manera de defenderse en contra de los cargos ya que no está vivo. Uno de nuestros derechos (tanto humano como civil) es que tenemos el derecho a defendernos cuando somos acusados de algo. Inclu-sive el estado no investigará un caso de abuso en el cual la persona acusa-da esté muerta, simplemente porque no hay manera de tener ambos lados de la historia. Esto no quiere decir que la acusación sea creíble o no, es solamente que no se puede hacer un juicio equitativo. Es verdaderamente desafortunado para quienes han sido abusados que ellos no tienen forma de probar su caso. Sería injusto también difamar a alguien después de muerto siendo este inocente. No es tan solo la iglesia, sino también otras instituciones como la escuelas, los equipos deportivos, y otros, que están buscando la forma de dar a conocer alguna acusación, pero también maneras de proteger a alguien que sea inocente. Nece-sitamos orar para que todos los que estén envueltos en este tipo de situa-ciones tengan sabiduría para llegar a una solución justa y también por la recuperación de aquellos que han sido abusados

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

2 Kgs 5:14-17; Ps 98:1-4; 2 Tm 2:8-13; Lk 17:11-19

Sanación y salvación Las lecturas de hoy hablan de sanación y salvación. En el segundo libro de los Reyes, Naamán, un comandante del ejército del rey de Siria, se enferma de lepra. Él va con un extranjero, un profeta de Israel cuando nadie más puede curar su enfermedad. Para su sorpresa, después de un simple baño en el río, él sanó. En el Evangelio de Lucas, Jesús sana a diez leprosos y los envía con el sacerdote. Solo uno, un samaritano, regresa a agradecerle a Jesús por haberlo sanado y él solo es-cucha las palabras: “tu fe te ha salvado”. El Salmo y Timoteo nos recuerda que la salvación involucra la justicia, la bondad y la fidelidad y nos vincula para siempre con Jesús. Healing and Salvation

The readings today speak of healing and salvation. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, after a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, “Your faith has saved you.” The psalm and Timothy remind us that salvation involves justice, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus.
