“Toma, Señor, y recibe toda mi libertad, mi memoria, mi comprensión y toda mi voluntad.
Deacon Kevin
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 26 2020
[ 3 ] SAINT CLARE of ASSISI PARISH
On January 12th we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The focus was on our Lord’s baptism, but tucked in the passage was an important exchange between John the Baptist and the Lord. He struggled with baptizing Jesus, whom he saw as greater than himself, but he ultimately did. Jesus humbled himself by not only being baptized, but doing so in public, joining the other repentant sinners. Jesus tells John, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”
To fulfill all righteousness is to willingly submit to God’s salvation of the human race. They knew what each was being called to do. Occasionally, though rarely, does any of us have the degree of consciousness that John and Jesus had that day.
This week’s Gospel is about the calling of the first four disciples, Peter, Andrew, James and John. Unlike John the Baptist, these men did not know with his degree of certainty, who Christ was. Yet they followed him. They dropped everything and unwittingly picked up their crosses.
This in a way was a foreshadowing of Christ’s saying, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” What is being offered? Come after me…to where, how long, can I sell my business, say goodbye? They ask nothing, they just go. What is a fisher of men exactly? In time they understood, but in that moment, they didn’t.
Would they have gone knowing what was to be experienced and endured? Hardship, isolation, and in ten cases, martyrdom.
In baptism we died to sin, became members of the Body of Christ, his Church. We received the Light of Christ, having been born in light and Spirit. We were anointed priest, prophet and king and given a role to “fulfill all righteousness.”
We too, like Peter, Andrew, James and John, are to be fishers of men. Unlike them, we should be less confused about what that means, in general. How we are to do that as individuals will be revealed by living lives of hope, faith, love and perseverance. Every day we are called to set our hand to our plow, looking forward, not behind.
Jesus calls us to humble ourselves and always seek to do God’s will. We will receive all we need to live our faith through his Word, the Eucharist and the Spirit. But first, we must surrender by dying to ourselves as we did in baptism so we may live in Christ and he in us. Giving ourselves over to Jesus is a truly liberating experience because by relying on Him we can know true peace and freedom. Sounds nuts, but it’s not. This prayer by St. Ignatius Loyola says it all:
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, All I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace, that is enough for me.
Surrender, and put your hand on the plow knowing all will be well.
Deacon Kevin

Every few years, the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord is celebrated on a Sunday. This feast marks 40 days after the celebration of Christmas. The date of
the feast is February 2. We join Mary and Joseph, and Simeon and Anna, in recognizing Jesus Christ as a light of the world. This is the day that the church blesses candles. We invite our parishioners to bring a candle from home to Mass that day. The candle can be scented or unscented; a pillar candle, a taper candle, or a candle enclosed in glass. Perhaps the candle might be your special prayer candle for the coming year, something that you can light as you spend a few minutes reading the Bible, or praying the rosary; or simply meditating on God‘s goodness to you. Like the blessing of palms on palm Sunday, this blessing will happen at the beginning of each Mass. We will provide a petite taper candle for those who do not bring their own can-dle to church on that day, so that they can join in the candle-light blessing. Small Group Faith Sharing will provide an opportunity for parishioners to get to know one another in a unique, comforta-ble, and casual setting. This small groups help participants deepen their faith and integrate more fully into their everyday lives including work and relationships. The groups are kept small in number to facilitate relationship building. As secular-ism gains influence and religion is seen as dull and backward, the small group expe-rience helps illuminate the beauty, intelli-gence and relevancy of our Catholic faith and tradition. To be truly Christ’s Church in the world is the vocation of every be-liever. The small faith community, as a vital part of the greater parish communi-ty, provides knowledge, encouragement and enthusiasm to Catholics to live out this call.

Matthew 4:22
Just as Jesus called the first apostles, He calls each of us to
follow Him in Stewardship. Not everyone is called to leave their
business or family behind, but we are expected to put God first in
everything. Everything from our time in daily prayer, our talent in participating in one of our parish
ministries and our treasure to support the financial needs of our
parish mission.

The planned repair was completed in the Spring of 2019. However, there are two more sections that need repair; The lower manual (Great) of the pipe organ and the foot pedals. Hopefully these repairs will be completed, with the money from fundraisers.
St. Joseph Church will be a 100 years old in 2025. The organ was purchased sometime after the church was built. Hopefully all repairs will be completed by 2025, and this glorious instrument will continue to be used for the Glory of God. Thanks again for your generosity,
