Sixth Sunday of Easter
May 17, 2020
FOCUS: If we do not speak and act for Christ, who will?
Saint Teresa of Avila once wrote that Christ has no body on
earth but ours. This 16th-century mystic understood what
Jesus meant when he said, If you love me, you will keep my
commandments. She believed we meet Jesus’ expectation by
becoming a voice for the voiceless, as Philip did in Samaria—
where his preaching, signs, and deeds brought great joy.
LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Philip
proclaims the Gospel in Samaria and many people are cured.
Peter and John follow and lay hands on the newly baptized
there, and they received the Holy Spirit. In the second read-
ing, Peter encourages the community to always be ready to
give reason for their hope, and be willing to suffer for doing
good. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that those who
love him will follow his commandments.
REFLECTION: The Advocate, the Spirit, is God’s perma-
nent presence in our midst, not only in us individually, but a
sustaining presence in our faith community. Jesus is true to
his promise. He has not left us orphans, but has gifted us
with his Spirit, our strength and companion for these difficult
days.
So we ask ourselves:
How is your faith being tested these days?
Does Jesus’ promise to give us "another Advocate" help
at all? How?
Sunday Masses are also available on these TV channels

2020 Census
The 2020 Census counts every person living in the United States on April 1—no matter where they are from, why they are here, and whether they are documented. When people complete their census form, they should count everyone liv-ing in their homes as of April 1, 2020. It’s easy, important, and safe to respond via mail, telephone or online.
The 2020 Census impacts our community.
The 2020 Census helps businesses, researchers, and
communities make decisions.
Your answers are important, secure, and confidential.
Funding for hospitals, schools, roads, and more is in-
formed by census data.
Shape the future for everyone from newborns to their
grandparents by responding to the 2020 Census.
Job Opportunity
St. William’s Rectory is looking for a cook to work 3 to 4 days per week. Please send your resume to Fr. Al at [email protected].
Contemplative Prayer
There are three major forms of prayer in Christian tradi-
tion—vocal prayer, meditation and contemplative prayer.
Perhaps the most difficult in our media saturated culture is
contemplative prayer. At its core, contemplative prayer is
spending alone time with God. More than just talking, con-
templative prayer is listening to God speak to us, away from
the distractions and hustle and bustle of life.
Many people have the false notion that contemplative prayer
can only be practiced by cloistered nuns or monks or saintly
mystics. Actually, we all need to engage in contemplative
prayer. Like everything, it is simply a matter of priorities.
In its beautiful section on contemplative prayer, the Cate-
chism of the Catholic Church puts it this way: “One does not
undertake contemplative prayer only when one has the time:
one makes time for the Lord, with the firm determination not
to give up, no matter what trials and dryness one many en-
counter.”
The Catechism quotes Jesus from Matthew 26:40 and says
that, “We must be willing to keep watch with him one hour.”
It also says that contemplative prayer is silence. Silence can
be a rare commodity. Why not take five or ten minutes of
your day to find some solace in silence and contemplate
God’s love and mercy for you?
A Minute in the Church by Gus Lloyd
Rosary Campaign Everyone is invited to pray the Rosary every night at 8:00pm asking a miracu-lous intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary to put an end to the coronavirus.
