From the Pastor’s Desk

My dear parishioners, The Gospel of this third Sunday of Lent speaks of the encounter of the Lord Jesus with the Samaritan woman at the well. At irst, there seems to be nothing unusual about it. But a deeper analysis shows some of the cul-tural and religious taboos that the Lord has broken. Thus, showing that he brings something new. The Gospel begins by saying that the Lord Jesus had to pass through Samaria. The reality is that Jews always bypassed Samaria by going across the Jordan river. The fact that the Lord had to go through Samaria takes a theological meaning. Even though “salvation is from the Jews”, as the Lord declared, but that salvation is not only for the Jews. It is also for all the nations. This is what is called the universality of salvation. It was only itting for the Lord to go through Samaria to bring them the gift of salvation, which is referred to in the Gospel as “living water.” Another taboo was the fact that the Lord was speaking with a Samaritan woman, asking her to give him water to drink. Jews regarded Samaritan women as impure, therefore everything they touched became impure. This explains the astonishment of the woman who asked, “how can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” And the Lord answered, “if you knew the gift of God.” What is that gift of God? It is the gift of salvation that embraces everyone; it is the amazing grace that saves all sinners; it is the Spirit of truth that quenches our spiritual thirst and satis ies the longings of our hearts. When we are able to receive and to appreciate that gift of God, we cannot help it, but to live as true disciples and to proclaim the message of salvation, as the Samaritan woman did: “Come and see a man who told me everything I have done.” The gift of salvation is not a gift we can keep for ourselves. It is a gift that is meant to be shared.

God bless you. always

Fr. Raphael
