GOD’S MERCY Today’s reading from the second book of Chroni-cles contains a sort of “mini-history” of Israel. It highlights God’s mercies in choosing Cyrus the Persian to be an instrument of deliverance when the people were in captivity in Babylon. Despite their sinfulness and the deserved punishment they were undergoing, God’s mercy was lavished on the people in the form of a miraculous act of liberation. The Letter to the Ephesians, in much more the-ological terms, gives a similar account of a God “who brought us to life with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” The author stresses that it was when we were “dead in our transgressions” that God saved us, an act of pure grace. He emphasiz-es that it is not our own efforts that freed us from sin (“this is not from you”); rather, “it is the gift of God.” This, of course, is the heart of the entire Pauline corpus, that salvation comes to us by faith in God’s mercy, revealed in the death of Jesus.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

God is great all the time, all the time, God is great!

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. FRANCISCO RIOS, PAROCHIAL VICAR…..

During Lent, before the pandemic, we used to have what we called “The light is on.” We even had billboards with this sign and buses with them too. So, every Wednesday during Lent all the parishes of the Diocese made the sacrament of Reconciliation, or Confession, available to the faithful. The pandemic changed that; the light was off. Later on we started to have regular Confessions on Saturdays, keeping social dis-tance, six feet apart and wearing a mask; the light was on again. This is what we are doing now, Confessions on Saturdays , six feet apart and wearing a facemask. For the last couple of weeks we have heard Confessions of our chil-dren in faith formation, CCD and School chil-dren. “The light came into the world …” and these children came to the Light, Jesus Our Lord, in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When I heard them saying “My God, I’m sorry for my sins “With all my heart”, in choosing to do wrong and failing to do good…” I felt that the light of God’s mercy and forgiveness was entering the soul of these little ones. It was a joy. At the same time I felt humbled and in need of reconcil-iation too. I felt the need of that light in my soul. We need during this Lenten season to let the light of Christ come into our souls; to repent from our sins, to rid ourselves of the works of dark-ness and start the works of the light so “may our works, by the grace of God, be seen as done in God”. Let’s come to the light, through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The light is on.

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

We celebrate the fourth of the five Sundays of Lent today. The journey continues, Jesus’ on the way to Calvary and to the rapture which Easter resurrection brings. Such suffering and such joy. It isn’t easy to take in, we know the outcome of course but like our life journey many trials will challenge us. The only way to bear up under these emotional moments asks that we remember the person of Jesus, the one who endured slings and arrows so that we might begin to bear our burdens. Jesus lived knowing that God was his guide. In our humble lives on whom do we rely? When it is just ourselves our struggles can seem disconnected, even punishment. We must take consolation from our belief in Jesus’ call for us and in the Father’s ever present care. That connection provides a vision of love so certain that we can place our challenges in the proper context. I’m reminded of a Gospel Choir singing Glory, Glory Halleluiah whose faces are beaming with present joy despite what awaits its members outside their church. During our Lenten journey we need Glory, Glory moments to help us keep our spirits centered on the life-giving love that Jesus was and is. Our failures and turmoil will still be with us and even beset us but the truth that we know allows us to soldier on, to suffer but also to let prayer be solace for our woundedness. Our Lenten practices are meant to be moments in which we are consoled and even anticipate Easter joy. It’s not that we’re able to expunge the sadness failure brings but rather we are able to see light beyond the darkness that we sometimes feel. Lent is indeed a journey, a journey with a certainty in the promise that we are Easter people. It’s almost that the light is too bright for us to remain in it for more than moments. But the gift those moments provide frees us from sorrow and despair. We have more time to walk as Lenten journeyers, time to feel not just our concerns but those of the larger world. As we come to grips with our own needfulness perhaps we can look outward to the needs of others, even of the world at large. Jesus, our lodestar and guide, came that all might be one. One not just in the good times but one in all times. How easy it is to make our focus too narrow, centered on our own person. We need to emulate Jesus, however imperfectly, in staying aware of the larger world. The world awash in uncertainty and crushed by divisiveness wrought from factions between countries whose vision is only of the needs of immediate fellow citizens. As we walk with Jesus during these Lenten days, feel free to take his hand, to weep and find hope in the love that has no limits.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK The rain has brought weeds back; before they get too big try pulling them up by hand. We’ll need mowers soon but save some non-renewable energy by using some that’s renewable… ours :-).

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL MSGR. FRANCISCO RIOS, VICARIO PARRO-

QUIAL……

“Miren, estamos subiendo a Jerusa-lén... (Mt 20,18).

Discovering God in the Everyday

Fourth Sunday of Lent:

Laetare Sunday

On Laetare Sun-day (similar to the Third Sunday of Advent’s Gaudete Sunday) the Church expresses hope and joy in the midst of our Lenten fasts and pen-ances. We get a glimpse of the joy that awaits us at Easter, just before hear about the Passion of Jesus in the weeks that remain.

John’s Gospel teaches us that Jesus was the light that came into the world. In this light we know ourselves to be sinners, but we are not condemned. Instead we have been saved be-cause we have been forgiven through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

FAMILY CHALLENGE Make a John 3:16 sign and place it in a promi-nent place in your home. Invite each family member to memorize John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”

St. Vincent de Paul The St. Vincent de Paul Help Line (408-778-2928) is answered every day by parish volun-teers. Local people in need contact us for help with rent, utilities, food, gas, etc. This ministry is for everyone in the community, including YOU! Feel free to call if you need anything. In this COVID season call volume is high, mostly for help with rent, as so many have experienced economic hardship; but financial assistance is available, thanks to generous donations from parishioners and the community. If you’d like to help with a donation or as a Help Line volun-teer, it would be appreciated. Thank you to all who have been so thoughtful at this time of hardship.

Safe Car Park Hosts up to eight homeless households, living in their cars, at a site in town that offers show-ers, laundry, food, and most importantly, a dedi-cated case manager to help families clear up debt, improve job skills, and secure affordable housing. They can stay with us as long as they are working diligently on their case manage-ment plan. This health crisis has been a real setback for families in the program. Donations are welcome for ongoing needs. You can find a periodic updates for items requested by the families in the bulletin. JOAN LOCSIN It is with great sadness we inform the Parish Community of the passing of Joan Locsin. Joan was the Music Director at St. Catherine’s for many years. She will be truly missed.

Joan Emily Locsin was born on January 5, 1953 on a kitchen table on the island of Guam. Her family moved to California when she was fourteen in 1967, and they ultimately settled in San Martin. She is sur-vived by her #1 son Phillip, her daughters Leyana and Lani Rae, their spouses, Jeremy and Pricilla, and

grandchildren Andre, Mika, Lily, Eligh, Noah, Irie, Jericho and Joey. She will be missed by family members, her community of faith and music, and those she’s touched with her kindness, generosity, infectious laugh, and unwavering spirit. It was her vision to make a positive contribution and impact on humanity. She lived and breathed that vision of love. She truly accentuated the posi-tivity of life. You knew her through her lovely, col-orful, all organic antioxidant / anti-inflammatory salads, the sharing of her holistic ways, in her laughter, her music, and her vibrant presence. Si Yu’us Ma’ase! Thank you, Mom for blessing us with your serenity, courage and wisdom to resume a healthy and holy life. We will tickle the kids for you and forever connect with your awesome ener-gy. And the gift goes on. Amen, Nana! Milele-Amina, Hu Guaiya Hao, with all our hearts. Please join us in song and prayer for an outdoor celebration of her joyous life as we honor and sing her name Saturday, March 20, at 12:00pm at St. Catherine’s Church followed by a sacred burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery. There will be a private cele-bration reception to follow. Her wish was that we all come in jeans, barefoot with percussion!

Distance learners in second grade had scheduled times too.

Afterward students commented how good they felt.

Lent… A season to

fast, pray and give alms.

A Legacy of Faith 2020-2021

The 17th Annual Appeal is well on its way! The school’s goal is to raise $65,000 this year. We are moving in that direction. You can still help! For more information about the Appeal, please contact Jennifer Laws, Development Director at [email protected] or 779-9950. Funds raised from the Annual Appeal help bridge the gap between tuition and the cost of educating each student as well as providing funds for new programs and tuition assistance.
