STEWARDSHIP: A WAY OF LIFE

O, what wondrous love is this! And oh, what a gift we’ve been given! The risen Christ transformed death into new life. For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven, suffered death, and was buried, and on the third day, He rose again, as foretold. We’ve been given the most extraordinary gift. Today, and everyday, we can rejoice in the very presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, who will sustain us as we strive to put our own talents and time daily to work for God. I can imagine no better way to thank God for the gift of everlasting life!

And while from death I’m free, I’ll sing on. And while from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be,

and through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on! This is the day the Lord has made!

Let us rejoice and be glad!

ADORACIÓN / ADORACJA

Could you not keep watch for one hour? —Mark 14:37

¿No has podido velar una hora? — Marcos 14:37

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. Alleluia! Easter is always, but especially in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the victory of God’s gentle but invincible mercy raising up Jesus, “faithful witness, the first-born of the dead” (Revelation 1:5), “first-born among many brothers [and sisters]” (Romans 8:29), conquering death in all its forms, in all of us in the human family. In Luke’s Vigil Gospel, heavenly messengers send the women forth: “Remember what [Jesus] said to you” (Luke 24:6). In John’s Gospel, the empty tomb likewise “sends forth” Mary Magdalene, Peter, and the Beloved Disciple, who believe though they do not fully understand. Finally, Luke’s evening “Emmaus” Gospel sends us forth, as “missionaries of mercy,” assuring us that we will encounter the Risen Lord, today and every day, in “the stranger” we meet along life’s journey, in “the Word that makes our hearts burn within us,” and “in the breaking of bread” (see Luke 24:32, 35).

YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER

Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!"

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

HAPPY EASTER Finally, the holy season of Lent is over. I say “finally” because after the Cross comes the Resurrection. Now we can rejoice in His resurrection and in the fruits of the penances we practiced during Lent. And now that we begin this Holy Easter may you see in your lives the Good and Merciful Lord who died and rose from the dead for our sake. May He allow us to see more and more the fruits of His resurrection. On behalf of Fr. Jordan, Fr. Val, deacon Martin and my self, Happy and blessed Easter.

GOD’S MERCY ENDURES FOREVER

How comforting John’s Easter Gospel. It proclaims not Jesus’ presence but Jesus’ absence, yet describes the presence of belief despite the absence of proof. What joy for serene believers! What comfort for anyone wrestling with doubt! What peace even for those simply wondering about it all! All of us renewing baptismal promises are reminded that the Jesus whom we seek is not dead in a tomb, but alive in all who need our love every day. Though we’ve not seen Jesus in person, as Peter did, we’ve seen Jesus in persons. Our life as disciples may be, as Paul says, “hidden with Christ in God,” but sharing in this Eucharist places us among those who “ate and drank with Jesus after he rose from the dead.” So Pope Francis’ Jubilee of Mercy bids us become “the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” for others, that is, living, nourishing witnesses of God’s reconciling, unconditional love in Christ, “broken and shared,” like the Eucharist, with others—all others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Company

Childish or Child-like?

The Gospel for Easter this year reminds me of little children. Mary of Magdala runs from the tomb when she sees it has been opened. Then Peter and the other disciple race each other to the tomb. The other one wins the race but Peter goes in first (John 20:1–5). I can picture the disciple stopping suddenly and Peter running into him, tripping and ending up in the tomb. But putting slapstick aside, there is another way they are like children. Remember the Gospel about St. Thomas, who would not believe Jesus’ resurrection until he could see him? Compare that to the disciple in today’s reading, who “saw [the empty tomb] and believed” (John 20:9). That is real faith. For all he knew, someone could have

taken Jesus’ body and left the cloths behind. But he must have remembered Jesus saying that he would rise again. That is the kind of faith we find in a little child. Children will believe in things they cannot see, especially if there is a good reason. We “bribe” them into believing in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy by giving them Christmas presents or money under the pillow. They will also believe in Someone real who they cannot see. If we teach them that God made them and loves them, if we love them ourselves and teach them to love others, they will have good reasons to believe in God. As they get older, we can teach them how to pray, save money for the poor, visit the sick, or volunteer to help the homeless. We can reinforce what they learn in religion class and

encourage them as they prepare for First Communion or confirmation. Jesus didn’t say that only children could enter the Kingdom. He said we must become like children if we want to enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3). What he means is that not only can we help teach children how to have faith, we can also learn from them about faith. Becoming like children does not mean being selfish or stubborn, throwing tantrums when we don’t get our way. Those are childish behaviors that we put aside. Instead, we can keep a child-like faith and trust in God. Teaching them about God is a great way to help our own faith to grow. By giving them real examples of God’s love for them, they will continue to believe long after they have given up the fairy tales of childhood. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
