REFLECTION ON THE WORDS OF GOD This week, Jesus tells us that we must examine our own inner selves, our attitudes and dispositions, virtues and faults, rather than judging others. What is in our hearts comes out in what and how we speak. If our hearts are filled with kindness and compassion, those qualities will be evident in our speaking, just as beautiful, whole-some fruit comes only from healthy trees. And vice-versa. The Wisdom writer Si-rach in the first reading agrees with this concept—that we will be judged by our words. Paul reminds us that the reward of discipleship is eternal life. Today’s psalm of thanksgiving and praise reminds us of God’s kindness and faithfulness, which we are to emulate in our thoughts, words, and deeds. We are known, each of us, by our own fruit. WORDS AND FRUIT What do these two things have in common? In Luke’s Gospel today, Jesus uses the image of a fruit tree to explain the importance of speaking with care. If the tree is healthy (that is, good), we expect to enjoy tasty fruit, but no one would pick the fruit of a tree that appears to be diseased. Good fruit is like good words that indicate one’s spiritual growth and maturity—a person whose heart and words are filled with goodness. We will be known as good or evil by the qualities—of mercy and com-passion, or pride and selfishness—that come from our hearts and enter the world through our mouth. We hear similar advice from the book of Sirach in our first reading. Just as the fruit will indicate whether or not the tree from which it came was healthy, so too do our words indicate what we think, how we view the world and our neighbors. Words are important, indeed. ACTIONS AND VICTORY But what about our actions? These surely are also signs of goodness or the opposite, aren’t they? Today’s psalm sings about the just ones who will be like trees flourishing in the house of the Lord, bearing fruit throughout their lives. Justice implies action—mercy, compassion, love. In the second reading, Paul advises the Corinthians to devote themselves to the work of the Lord, that their labors would not be in vain, because the reward of acting with integrity is victory over sin and death. The person of justice and integrity acts and speaks from a new heart, made possible by Jesus’ sacrifice. Do actions speak louder than words? Maybe between this Gospel and last week’s, when Jesus told us to love our ene-mies, Jesus is showing us that both are vital and essential aspects of following the life of discipleship. Ngày 7 Tháng 3—Thánh Perpetua và Thánh Felicity (Lễ Nhớ)

Trong những truyền thuyết mù mờ về đời sống các vị tử đạo tiên khởi, may mắn chúng ta vẫn còn được tài liệu về sự can đảm của Thánh Perpetua và Felicity từ chính nhật ký của Thánh Perpetua, của giáo lý viên Saturus, và các chứng nhân. Văn bản này, thường được gọi là "Sự Tử Ðạo của Perpetua và Felicity," được nổi tiếng trong các thế kỷ đầu tiên đến nỗi văn bản ấy đã được đọc trong phụng vụ. Vào năm 203, Vibia Perpetua quyết định trở nên một Kitô Hữu, mặc dù ngài biết điều đó có thể dẫn đến cái chết trong thời kỳ bách hại của Septi-mus. Người cha trả lời, "Dĩ nhiên là không." Và Perpetua thản nhiên tiếp lời, "Con cũng không thể gọi con bằng một cái tên nào khác hơn là bản chất của con -- một Kitô Hữu." Câu trả lời đã làm người cha bực mình và ông đã tấn công chính con mình. Nhật ký Perpetua kể cho chúng ta biết, sau biến cố ấy ngài phải sống tách biệt với cha ngài trong vài ngày, và sự tách biệt ấy đã đưa đến sự bắt bớ và tù đầy của chính ngài. Perpetua bị bắt với bốn người dự tòng khác, kể cả hai người nô lệ là Felicity và Revocatus. Người dạy giáo lý cho các ngài là Saturus đã bị bắt trước đó. Nhà tù đầy chật người đến nỗi họ ngộp thở vì nóng nực và không có một chút ánh sáng. Quân lính thì xô đẩy họ không một chút xót thương. Per-petua thật khiếp sợ, nhưng trong tất cả những sự ghê rợn ấy, điều đau khổ lớn lao nhất của ngài là phải xa cách đứa con thơ. Người nô lệ trẻ tuổi là Felicity lại càng đáng thương hơn nữa, vì ngài đang mang thai tám tháng và phải sống trong cái nóng nực, chen chúc, và thô bạo ấy. Hai phó tế phục vụ tù nhân đã đút lót lính canh để các ngài được ở chỗ tốt nhất trong nhà tù. Ở đó, mẹ và em của Perpetua đã đến thăm và đưa con đến cho ngài. Khi được phép giữ con trong tù, ngài cảm thấy "nhà tù trở nên như cung điện". Cha ngài lại nài nỉ ngài thay đổi ý định, ông hôn tay ngài và ngay cả quỳ dưới chân ngài. Khi dân chúng đòi hỏi Perpetua và các bạn ngài phải mặc y phục dành cho việc thờ cúng tà thần, Perpetua đã đối chất với các lý hình. "Chúng tôi tự ý chịu chết để được tự do thờ phượng Thiên Chúa của chúng tôi. Chúng tôi đã trao mạng sống cho các ông thì không có lý do gì chúng tôi phải thờ lạy thần thánh của các ông." Và các ngài đã được phép mặc quần áo của mình. Những người đàn ông thì bị tấn công bởi gấu, beo và heo rừng. Các phụ nữ thì bị bò dại tấn công. PALABRAS Y FRUTO ¿Qué tienen en común estas dos cosas? En el Evangelio de Lucas de hoy, Jesús utiliza la ima-gen de un árbol frutal para explicar la importancia de hablar con cuidado. Si el árbol es saludable (que es bueno), esperamos disfru-tar de un árbol delicioso, pero nadie cosecharía el fruto de un árbol que pa-

rezca enfermo. El fruto bueno es como las palabras bue-nas que indican la madurez y el crecimiento espiritual de una persona, una persona cuyo corazón y palabras están llenas de bondad. Seremos conocidos como buenos o ma-los por las cualidades, de misericordia y compasión, u or-gullo y egoísmo, que vienen de nuestro corazón y entran al mundo por medio de nuestra boca. Escuchamos un consejo similar del libro de Eclesiástico en la primera lectura. Así como el fruto indicará si el árbol del que viene está saludable, así también lo hacen nuestras palabras que indican lo que pensamos, cómo vemos al mundo y a nuestro prójimo. En efecto, las palabras son importantes. ACCIONES Y VICTORIA ¿Pero qué hay de nuestras acciones? Seguramente estas son signo de la bondad o lo opuesto, ¿cierto? El salmo de hoy canta acerca de los justos que serán como árboles floreciendo en la casa del Señor, produciendo fruto durante todas sus vidas. La justicia implica acción, misericordia, compasión, amor. En la segunda lectura, Pablo aconseja a los corintios a dedicarse al trabajo del Señor, que sus es-fuerzos no serán en vano, porque la recompensa de com-portarse con integridad es la victoria sobre el pecado y la muerte. La persona de justicia e integridad se comportan y hablan a causa de un nuevo corazón, hecho posible por el sacrificio de Jesús. ¿Las acciones hablan más fuerte que las palabras? Quizá entre este Evangelio y el de la semana pasada, cuando Jesús nos dijo amar a nuestros enemigos, Jesús nos está mostrando que ambos son vitales y aspectos esenciales del seguimiento de la vida del discipulado.
