From the Pastor’s Desk...
something to do with our Tradition placing Bernard’s feast day within an Octave of Mary and it was St. Bernard (d. 1153) who took our oldest prayer to Mary (“Under Your Compassion”) and developed it further into what we now call The Memorare:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection (splanchnon) implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.
THIS WEEK
SPECIAL COLLECTION – This weekend we will take up the annual collection for the support of the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Over the years a number of our own parishioners have received tuition assistance from this national appeal.
No 6 PM Confessions on Tuesday….
Thanks to the 83 individuals or families who in July used our online Sunday donation program through the parish website. The Sunday collection is our main source of funds that enable us to fulfill the core mission we have received from the Risen Lord: to seek out and serve those in need; to worship the Father; to share the Good News of Jesus.
If you appreciate the ease of online banking and bill paying, you will be happy to know that you can easily offer your regular Sunday donation to St. Ann with automatic online donations. Visit https://churchofsaintann.org/donations to learn more, make a one-time gift, or create a personal recurring gift account.
Thank you for your support over the years and especially in these challenging days of the Covid 19 pandemic.
TELLING TIME, SHAPING TIME – In our Tradition we structure time both to help us prepare for and also to wind down from major liturgical moments. We spend periods of nine day (“novenas”) to prepare for special celebrations and periods of eight day (“octaves”) to digest the Mystery we have celebrated.
OCTAVE - This Saturday (August 22) we will conclude the Octave of the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary (August 15) as we celebrate the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary. So what’s the Big Deal?
“FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE HEART” – At some point each one of us has said that we love someone “from the bottom of our heart”. The Greek verb splanchidzein expresses a movement that is occurs even deeper than the bottom of our heart; namely, in our gut. In the New Testament the verb splanchidzein occurs only in the Gospels and is used only to describe Jesus’ reaction to human suffering, eg.: “he was moved with compassion because they were like sheep without a shepherd” (Mt. 9:36; Mk. 6:34); “he was deeply moved and healed all who were sick” (Mt. 14:14); when he fed the 5,000 it was they were lost and he was moved with compassion” (Mt. 15:32); the Good Samaritan (representing God) was moved with compassion when he came upon the victim of violence (Lk. 10:33); and the Father (God) who saw his wayward son returning was moved with compassion and ran to welcome his prodigal son home (Lk. 15. 20).
GUT REACTION – Mary is the Prime Disciple in several senses: 1) she was the first to love Jesus; 2) she is the disciple who loves Jesus the most; and 3) she is the disciple who most faithfully does Jesus’ will. Hence it is not surprising that in our oldest prayer to Mary (c. 250 A.D.) we encounter the verb that heretofore had beenused only of her Son:
“Under your compassion (splanchnon) we take refuge, O Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in time of trouble, but rescue us from dangers, only pure, only blessed one.”
MEMORARE – This Thursday (August 20) will be the Memorial of St. Bernard of Clairvaux who was especially noted for his devotion to and connection with the Mother of God. I suspect this intimate relationship has

Holy Family School welcomes retired or “on a break” certified teachers to join our substitute pool. We value our substitute teachers, and they
quickly become part of our family! If you or anyone you know would care to join our ranks, please send your resume to the office at [email protected]. Be aware that both PA clearances and documentation of diocesan trainings are required in order to substitute teach at Holy Family School. Call the office at 610-933-7562 for more information.
JOB OPENING
Pope John Paul II High School in Royersford is looking for
an experienced facilities/maintenance person to join our
team. Please send a cover letter and resume to Ron
Williams at [email protected].
Altar Flowers: Thank you to Florence and Paul Tashjian and family for donating this weekend’s beautiful flower arrangement. (The flowers were purchased from Florence’s sister’s shop, which like many other local businesses, has been affected by the Covid Virus: Genuardi Florist, www.genuardiflorist.com, 215-855-3850)
Streaming to the "Mass"es
Since March, we have been fortunate to have Deacon Giblin livestream our Masses on Facebook Live. This has been a great worship aid to those unable to attend in person. Since we expect to continue livestreaming for the foreseeable future, we are looking to relieve our resident "camera-Deacon" from this task. If you are interested, and are 18 or older, and have basic computer skills, please contact the parish office (610-933-3732).

Eucharistic Congress Postponed - The Eucharistic Congress that was scheduled for October 9-10, 2020 at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul has been postponed due to COVID-19 virus. The Mayor of Philadelphia has issued a mandate “no large gatherings of 25 or more inside or outside." We will let you know when a new date has been set. Please continue to pray for an end to COVID-19 and may the Lord bring healing to our Nation and City. Prayer to Saint Michael, the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our defense against the wickedness and snares
of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do you, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.
