The Boulder History Museum provides engaging educational experiences for people to explore the continuing history of the Boulder region. The Museum collects, preserves, and presents Boulder history in order to connect them with the past, provide a context for the present, and inspire a vision for the future.

OUR MISSION

INTERPRETIVE VALUES

All programs must advance the Mission and Vision of the Museum: The Museum’s Mission and Vision form the basic standard of measure for evaluating the appropriateness of any potential Museum exhibition or program. Respect for Research and Inquiry: The Museum will use a process of rigorous inquiry in the development of all its exhibitions and programs to assure that they are deeply grounded in sound research. In carrying out the research and planning of the Museum’s exhibitions and programs it will use the perspectives of both academic and creative disciplines and the skills and expertise of collaborative partners, both individuals and groups, that can help the Museum shape content rich, memorable, and engaging exhibitions and programs. Respect for Its Audiences: Residents and visitors to the Museum will be diverse in their backgrounds, education, and interests. Respectfulness of this diversity, and of their individuality as people will be an integral part of the welcome, hospitality, and overall visitor experience of the Museum. Every Museum exhibition, program and activity will be designed to connect to the lives and interests of audiences with different cultural traditions and learning styles, and will be delivered in a way that is accessible, engaging, and interactive. A Commitment to Making the Development and Implementation of all Museum Programs and Activities a Team Process: Museum exhibitions and other programs will represent the combined resources of the Museum’s historical collections, staff skills and expertise, the expertise and perspective of outside collaborators and partners, and the needs and values of museum audiences. For this reason the Museum will use a collaborative, team process to ensure the highest quality and broadest reach for all its programs.

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW In addition to the permanent exhibit, Storymakers, the Boulder History Museum presents two to three new exhibits every year in the Harbeck House galleries. Some of these exhibits are developed by the Museum staff and focus directly on the people, events, businesses and activities of the Boulder area. Others are traveling exhibits that are on loan from other museums. While these may have a broader historical focus, we use artifacts and photographs from our collection to illustrate the connections to our local history.

Only in Boulder: A Sesquicentennial Celebration

Science Stories. In the Spring and Fall of 2010, the Museum coordinated two collaborative projects that matched local middle school students with scientists in the Boulder community. The students were charged with creating short videos documenting their scientists’ stories. The results were both entertaining and a wonderful demonstration of the power of video to engage kids and adults in science and storytelling.

K-12 FOCUS

7th and 8th grade Launching Space program participants from Horizons Middle School filming at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP.)

Launching Space was funded by an SCFD special project grant. Above, a Horizons student is working in the school computer lab on edits to her film.

The Earth Explorers project was funded by a 2010 NOAA Heritage Grant. Scientists from NOAA, as well as NCAR, LASP and project NEON met with Trail Ridge Middle School MESA program students throughout the fall to share their stories and help create videos featured in the Museum’s “Treasures of NOAA’s Ark” exhibit.

Earth Explorer participants toured NOAA, NCAR and LASP labs to learn and to film.

THE COLLECTION

Collections Care

The Collections Department was very active in 2010 with much progress made at the Christensen Storage Facility. The space was organized to clear aisles between shelving units. Three new shelving units with 126 cubic feet of storage space were added to accommodate incoming donations. 1,700 artifacts were photographed and properly documented in the Museum’s database and a total of 253 new artifacts from 23 donors were brought into the collection in 2010.

The Collections Department benefited from the hard work of a steady team of very dedicated volunteers. They provided about 80 hours per month of valuable assistance in processing and documenting artifacts in the collection. Much of the volunteer time was spent repacking the Museum’s large clothing collection. The clothing was taken from cardboard wardrobe boxes and placed horizontally in acid-free textile boxes. This is an example of the conservation measures the staff and volunteers do on a daily basis to protect the Museum’s collection of more than 38,000 historic artifacts.

This red velvet dress and jacket with white fur trim was worn by Kate Crowder in 1958 when she was Miss Merry Christmas. Ms. Crowder donated the dress to the Museum in 2010.

This Brakeman armband and switch key were used on the Switzerland Trail Railroad in the early 1900s. Donated to the Museum by Doris Hanson.

VOLUNTEERS In 2010, more than 70 Museum volunteers logged 2,666 hours helping with school tours, scout and outreach programs, special events, research, exhibits, collections documentation, and serving on the Board of Trustees and Museum committees. We are very lucky to have such dedicated and capable volunteers.

2010 BY THE NUMBERS

THANK YOU!

900,000 documents and photographs in the collection at Carnegie 128,838 visits to the website www.boulderhistory.org 38,000 historical artifacts in the collection 11,100 people served through programs and events 8,214 visitors to the Museum 2,886 participants in outreach programs 1,470 students served 696 attendees to Conversations with Extraordinary People 288 members 253 artifacts donated to the collection 70 volunteers

DAYCAMPERS

In 2010, the Museum embarked on a new collaboration with the Lifelong Learning program through the Boulder Valley School District to offer day camps for local families. 15-20 students in K-5th grade spent the day at the Museum on four different occasions exploring a variety of topics like aviation and aerospace history, winter holidays and gingerbread house techniques. The Museum plans to pursue this fruitful partnership for many years to come!

Whittier Historians Writers Project. The Museum assisted the Whittier History Club and Historic Boulder in creating a book based on oral histories the 5th grade students completed with Whittier alumni. This is just one example of the special projects the Museum engages in to support history education in the schools!

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Day campers listen to live air traffic control on a portable pilot’s radio.

Columbia Cemetery Biographies. With recent changes to the BVSD curriculum, the Museum heard from our Teacher Advisory Working Group that more 8th grade Boulder History programming was needed—and we responded! A new Historic Biography project challenges students to explore Museum-created biography kits detailing 15 Columbia residents, and then present findings to their peers on a Museum guided tour.

ADULTS AND FAMILIES

Conversations with Extraordinary People

This very successful speaker series presents the innovative people, events, research and businesses whose connection with Boulder has helped shaped this community as a remarkable place. The Boulder History Museum hosted nine Boulder Conversations with Extraordinary People programs in 2010 with nearly 700 people in attendance. The series was held once a month between September and May at the Chautauqua Community House.

History Talks

Throughout the year the Museum offered a variety of history talks at the Harbeck House and in partnership with the Carnegie Library for Local History. Subjects included ‘Finding the Switzerland Tail of America’ and ‘The Music and Instruments of the Power of Music Exhibition.’ More than 350 guests attended these programs.

“A Tour and Tea”

A Tour and Tea was a new adult program offered in 2010. Guests received a 45 minute guided tour of the Museum exhibits followed by a personal and informative tea tasting of three varieties of teas courtesy of Celestial Seasoning. The Museum hosted six Tour and Tea programs for 71 guests.

The Museum’s September family event celebrated Boulder’s enthusiasm for aerospace and aviation history. Representatives from the Civil Air Patrol, Wings Over the Rockies Museum, the Boulder Aeromodelers Club, and space shuttle astronaut Joe Tanner offered engaging activities for adults and kids alike!
