———CALENDAR OF THE WEEK———

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
Today is the Feast of the Epiphany, which is
the origin of gift-giving at Christmas. While we have
conflated the Feast of St. Nicholas (who became Santa
Claus) with the gifts borne by the Magi to the Christ-
child in our American Christmas tradition of giving
gifts, in many places around the world, Christmas is a
church day and a family-dinner day, but Epiphany is
the day that gifts are exchanged.
Here, at OLGC & St. Ambrose, to celebrate
Epiphany, our parishes will be hosting a “Epiphany
Party” Sunday, January 6, from 1 until 3 in the OLGC
Parish Hall. It will take the form of a Baby Shower.
After all, the Magi traveled all that way to give gifts to
a baby, and nowadays, Baby Showers can be a lot of
fun, with games and prizes and food. All Middle-
school and High-School students and their friends are
invited to come and bring with them a baby gift—
diapers, baby-wipes, baby clothes, books, toys, etc—
and these items will be donated to Mom’s House,
which support those in our community who may be
single parents, but despite the challenges, chose life.
What a great way to continue in the tradition of the
Magi and honor the Lord and Giver of Life by taking
care of others of God’s children. And, it should be a
lot of fun! I hope to see you there.
God bless,
Fr. Michael

Our Sunday Bulletin is the primary way we com-
municate with our parish members. Through arrangement
with Liturgical Publications, the parish does not pay for
the bulletin printing, which saves us thousands of dollars
each year. Our bulletin is supported through the generosity
of the advertisers, many of whom are our own parish mem-
bers or members of the local community. We urge you to
support our advertisers with your patronage. Tell the busi-
ness owner that you appreciate their support of our parish
through their advertising in our bulletin. This is one way
we can work to create a vibrant community. A strong, en-
gaged parish is good for our community and a strong busi-
ness community is good for our parish.
Are you looking to learn more abut your Catholic faith?

The Epiphany of the Lord
Epiphany is one of the Church’s major and spectacular
feasts. It occurs on January 6th, the final day of the 12
days of Christmas (in some locations it is transferred to
the Sunday between January 2 – 8). In some places it
is also called Twelfth Night or Three Kings Day. This
is the day the Church commemorates the Magi arriving
to give homage to the newborn King of Kings with
their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, symbolic
of all the Gentile nations coming into the Kingdom of
God. In many places around the world, this was the
traditional day of gift-giving in celebration of Christ-
mas.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE from
the Office of Family Life Education (A
Hope Appeal Agency)
After meeting Jesus, the Magi returned home
by “another way.” What in your family needs to be done
“another way?” Do you need “another way” to resolve dif-
ferences, to communicate or show affection? This is a new
year, time to change what isn’t working. Take a tip from some
wise men, there’s always “another way.”
