———CALENDAR OF THE WEEK———

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
This week marks the 45th anniversary of the legali-
zation of abortion in the United States, and as happens eve-
ry year, thousands went to Washington, DC to prayerfully
protest this decision with a solemn march past the US Su-
preme Court. While it is a Catholic and Biblical principle
to not take human life in any form for any reason, since all
human life is a sacred gift that comes from God and be-
longs to God, at present I am asking you to stand up and be
counted in protest of a bill that is coming before the New
York State Assembly that is, in my opinion, far more trou-
bling and far more dangerous than the original Roe v Wade
decision ever was.
First, Governor Cuomo is seeking to inscribe abor-
tion as a right in the New York State Constitution so that,
in the event of an overturn of Roe v Wade, it would still be
legal in New York. Second, he wants to extend the period
of time that an abortion can be performed right up to the
moment of birth. Third, in the even that abortion fails and
the child is born live, it would become legal to kill the child
outside the womb. And finally, abortions could then be
legally performed by any health care practitioner, whereas
currently it has to be a licensed physician. This is a horrific
bill that basically legalizes cold blooded murder, and I pray
we can convince our State Legislators to oppose it. Infor-
mation regarding this bill is available at all the church en-
trances, and you can state your opposition via email at:
www.nyscatholic.org/2019/01/abortion-expansion-act/. I
urge you to do so, as well as contact your state representa-
tive personally.
God bless,
   Fr. Michael

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
2019: Justice, Only Justice, You Shall
Pursue
January 18-25, 2019
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
was first proposed in 1908 as an ob-
servance within the Roman Catholic
Church by Fr Paul Wattson, founder of the Franciscan Friars
of the Atonement in Graymoor, New York. Since the founding
of the World Council of Churches in 1948, many other Chris-
tian denominations around the world have come to celebrate
the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
The international resources for the 2019 Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity have been prepared by colleagues in Indone-
sia. The 2019 theme, Justice and only justice you shall pursue
(Deut 16:18-20), calls us to move from shared prayer to shared
action. Drawing on the traditional values of Bhineka Tunggal
Ika (Unity in Diversity) and gotong royong (living in solidarity
and by collaboration), Indonesian Christians invite us to be a
united witness, and an agent of Christ’s healing grace in a bro-
ken world, by making specific commitments to justice, equali-
ty, and unity. For more information check out the USCCB
website

her son would make the best decision.
