teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

Colossians 3:16

The Sailor SaluteI pledge allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ, Whose name I love and Whose praise I sing. As a faithful sailor in Patch the Pirate Club, I will do my best to serve my Savior and obey His Word.

Ahoy, Mateys!Welcome aboard to a year of adventure and character-building fun!1 Timothy 4:7-8 teaches us to “exercise [ourselves] . . . unto godliness. For . . . godliness is profitable unto all things.”Your Patch Club lessons this year will help you learn godly character traits through daily Quiet Time devotions, Bible stories, Patch adventure music, Proverbs Scripture songs, and Willow Valley Kids stories with beautiful illustrations. In this Sailor Log, you will find a Learn at Home CD of all the Patch the Pirate songs for the year. Listen at home, and you will be able to learn your music very quickly. For much of my life, I’ve read a daily Proverbs chapter matching the day of the month. What a wonderful habit to begin in your own life! I hope it’s something you will try to do. Reading the Bible every day has helped me far more than I could have ever imagined! Don’t miss the boat! Join us each week as we study the book of Proverbs and seek to find treasure God has given to direct us through our lives! See you in club!

Rejoicing in the Lord,

Ron Patch HamiltonPhilippians 4:4

The sailors in Patch the Pirate Club meet every month for four consecutive weeks. At the end of the month they perform the song they have learned. A sailor must attend each of the weekly meetings and the performance and must complete the entire month of My Quiet Time Devotions to earn the award pins given at the end of each month.

If your child misses one meeting during the month, he may make up the absence by quoting the make-up memory verse to a club worker. If he misses more than one meeting and wishes to make up absences, the captain may (if he or she determines the absence to be legitimate) assign the child a make-up verse for each absence. The only way to make up incomplete My Quiet Time Devotions is to complete them and have them checked by the club captain or co-captain.

If a child is faithful in attendance and in completing his/her devotions for an entire year (and has thus earned all nine of his award pins), he/she is eligible to receive a Faithful Servant Award at the end of the club year. A very special Super Sailor of the Year Award is given to one boy and one girl who have exhibited a consistent testimony and faithfulness throughout the club year. The club captain will keep attendance records for your child. See the captain if you have questions concerning your child’s award eligibility.

Note: The award pins are to be attached to the sailor hat in neat rows on either side of the logo badge. See the previous page for a complete illustration of the uniform and awards.

READ & PRAY

My Quiet Time

It is important for Christians to be faithful in having a daily quiet time with God. This year we are going to help you develop this habit. A quiet time is a time when you listen to God and let Him talk to you through His Word, the Bible. It is a time when you praise God, tell Him you love Him, and thank Him for things He has done for you. You also pray about things you or someone else needs.

If you can read the Bible, you can have your quiet time all by yourself. This is the best way to grow up in your Christian life. If you cannot read the Bible yet, ask your father, your mother, or some older person to share your quiet time with you every day. Pick a time and place where you won’t be distracted. It should be a place where you can see well and where you can comfortably write.

Here is a plan for you to follow for your quiet time. You will need a Bible, a pencil or pen, and your Sailor Log.

1. Look up the verse in your Bible.2. Fill in the blanks in My Quiet Time daily devotional guide.3. Read the explanation of the verse.4. Think about what the verse means.5. Ask God to help you apply the lesson to your own life, and use

the prayer time suggestion as a guide when you pray.

I will have my quiet time with God _________________________.

* O Little Town of Bethlehem, Words by Phillip Brooks; Music by Lewis H. Redner* Angels We Have Heard on High, Traditional French carol

Page 16: SAILOR’S LOG

16 Christmas

Sailors 1-3 should stand together where they can easily be seen and heard when they speak. The performance may be presented in “reader’s theater style” with those speaking the parts actually reading from a script. It should be well-practiced so that the presentation is clearly understood.

Sailor 1 Ever since God created man and placed him in the garden of Eden, God has always wanted to dwell with and fellowship with mankind.

Sailor 2 When Adam and Eve sinned, their sin made that close fellowship no longer possible. But God made a promise that He would raise up One Who would destroy Satan and would free mankind from the curse of sin. Genesis 3:15 tells us:

Sailors 1-3 “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

Sailor 3 Forward to the time after the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. God leads His chosen ones into the wilderness. It is here that God appears to them and to Moses on Mount Sinai and tells them of His desire to dwell with them.

Sailor 1 “And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, . . . And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.”*

Sailor 2 The tabernacle is only a temporary home for God. The word tabernacle means “to dwell with.” This was how Yahweh would dwell with His people. When the Israelites finally settle in the promised land, God allows Solomon to build a glorious temple. It is here that God sets up another residence among His people.

Sailor 3 None of these temporary dwellings are the same as the relationship God and man once had in the Garden of Eden. Sin still separated man from the sweet dwelling that God desired.

Sailor 1 God’s desire to truly tabernacle with His people would be fulfilled in Jesus Christ. John 1:14 tells us:

Sailors 1-3 “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” Sailor 2 Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s promise to again dwell with His people. Through

Jesus’ death and resurrection, believers have direct access to God. As children of God, we are now the tabernacle that God indwells through the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 3:1–12—“My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”

Matthew 6:9-13 —After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Sailor 4 stands behind a podium or table labeled with a large sign: “Information Desk.” Sailors 1, 2, 3, and 5 enter and stand at the side as though in line. Use props and costume items to present Sailor 1 as a scholar, Sailor 2 as a scientist, and Sailor 3 as an emotional thinker. Sailor 5 carries a Bible. After Sailors 1, 2, and 3 take their turn, they leave the information desk and stand off to the other side, their backs to the audience, until Sailor 5 begins to speak.

Sailor 4 (Calls out loudly.) Next!Sailor 1 (Approaching podium.) I want to know everything about God and His Kingdom!

Where should I begin?Sailor 4 (Pointing in random directions.) There’s the library, and the university is over there.

Get to work—you have a lot of studying to do!Sailor 2 I want to understand how everything works together. Why and how does this uni-

verse exist? I just want to understand and figure it all out.Sailor 4 The science lab is that way, and the telescope is up on that hill. Have at it!Sailor 3 Please! I just need to know why I’m here! What does it all mean? I mean . . . what’s

the point of everything? (Takes Sailor 4 by the shoulders.) I really, really nee-ee-eed to know!

Sailor 4 (Steps away from Sailor 3 and scratches his/her head.) Uh . . . maybe you should Google that. Wait!—Have you tried yoga?

Sailor 5 (Steps forward and speaks urgently.) Hold on everyone—you’re all looking in the wrong place!

Sailor 4 What are you talking about? This is the twenty-first century, and we are on the cut-ting edge of modern thinking.

Sailor 5 All of you are seeking after knowledge, understanding, and meaning—right?Sailors 1, 2, 3 Yes!Sailor 4 (Points to the sign.) It’s all right here! I’m telling you!Sailor 5 No. It’s not! Only the one true God offers what you are looking for. “But seek ye

first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Choir (Recites.) Proverbs 9:10—“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

What does the lower number 8 in the 6/8 TIME SIGNATURE located in the very first measure of your song tell you? (Reminder: the lower number 8 tells you that an eighth note receives one count throughout the song.) See the illustration above. There are two EIGHTH NOTES when you sing the word kingdom. An _____________________ note receives one count or beat in a 6/8 time signature.

The top number 6 tells you how many COUNTS are in each measure. So that means that there are ______________ COUNTS in each measure in this song.

Directions: In the musical excerpt (example) below, you will see music signs that help you sing correctly. Fill in the blanks to help you understand the first two lines of “The Kingdom of God.”

The number 7 above the very first measure tells you that there are ______________ full measures before the measure where you begin to sing. This is called the introduction when the piano or orchestra instruments on the recording play to introduce the song. In what measure do you begin to sing? (Clue: it’s the first measure after the introduction.)

Follow your captain to know exactly when to begin singing!

Directions: God has given us His Word to help us know why we were created. Match the questions below to the answers from the Bible.

I’m here to bring glory and honor to the Lord Jesus Christ.“All things were created by him, and for him: . . . that in all things he might have the preeminence.” Colossians 1:16b, 18b

Sinful people who are not obedient to God’s Word.“For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works.” Colossians 1:19, 21a

Through the death of Jesus on the cross and through the repentance and faith of sinners.“Yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith . . . and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard.” Colossians 1:21b-23a

I am the precious creation of God— His crown and glory!“What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.” Psalm 8:4-5

Invitation: Have you ever trusted Jesus to be your Savior? If not, you can believe and receive His gift of salvation today. Ask your Club Captain, a parent, or another Christian to show you from the Bible how you can know for certain that you are a child of God. Remember: True faith (and wisdom) begins at the cross!

24 The Kingdom of God

WHAT'S THE POINT?Why are you here in this world? What is the purpose for your life? These are very big questions to think about. How you answer these questions will affect all the choices you make throughout your life—how you spend your time and money, how you handle the bad things that happen, how you plan for the future, and how you face death. This week, you will look at some common beliefs people have about the meaning of their lives. Then you may answer this question: what do I believe?

Ecclesiastes 2:10a—“And whatsoever __________ eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy.”

What is the purpose of your life? Many people in this world believe their only reason to be alive is to please themselves. Like the writer of today’s verse, they try to get every pleasure possible. Nothing is off limits to them—as long as it makes them feel good. Life is all about them and what they want. Sadly, this way of thinking leads to emptiness and despair. Those who gain fame and fortune come to realize that happiness is not found there. Pleasing self is not the path to a satisfied, fulfilled soul. Do you always seek to do only what pleases you?

Ask God to open your eyes to a better way of living. Thank Him that He offers true joy to those who follow Him.

Ecclesiastes 6:12—“For who knoweth what is ___________ for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a ________________? For who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?”

Many people who do not believe in God think that when a person dies their soul just disappears and stops existing. If you don’t believe there is life after death, then it doesn’t matter whether you do good things or evil

things. Nothing really matters other than having a good time right now. Think of how sad death becomes for those who choose to believe this way!

Thank God that He promises eternal life beyond death. Ask Him to give you faith to trust in Him.

Exodus 32:1—“And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the ______________, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, “Up, make us gods which shall go before us; for as for this ______________, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.”

The children of Israel had very little faith in God even after He had done great miracles to save them from Egypt. When God called Moses up onto the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments, God’s people got tired of waiting for Moses to return. Today’s verse says they asked Aaron to make them new “gods” to worship. In today’s world, people do not want to bow to the one true God. Instead they worship their own idols—movie stars, sports heroes, money, and things they want—anything that comes before God. Are you following after a “god” of your own choosing rather than serving the one true God?

Ask God to help you see what idols are in your own heart.

Acts 17:22-23—“Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of _____________, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown ___________. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.”

The Apostle Paul was a great missionary who traveled to many cities boldly preaching the gospel. When he came to Athens, he found a

public square in the center of town where many different idols were set up. Just in case the people were missing an important “god,” they set up an idol named “the unknown god.” Clearly in Athens, people did not believe anyone could say for certain that one god was true and another was false. They didn’t believe anyone could really know what was true, so everyone just made their best guess. In today’s world, you will find this way of thinking all around you. Everyone should just let everyone believe whatever they choose, because no one can really know what is right. Is this what you believe?

Ask God to show you from His Word and with His Spirit that there is only one God—and this one God loves you!

Acts 24:25—“And as he [Paul] reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, _________ trembled and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season I will call for thee.”

The Apostle Paul was arrested and held in prison for preaching about the one true God. Felix ruled over the town where Paul was in prison. Sometimes when Felix was bored, he would call for Paul to come tell him things of God and Jesus Christ. Today’s verse says that after listening to Paul, Felix was greatly moved—so much that he was shaking. But instead of trusting in God, Felix put it off until later. Are you like Felix, thinking you have plenty of time to think about what you believe? You’re young, and you have your whole life in front of you. Why worry about trusting in God now? The Bible says that you cannot know what the future holds for you—now is when you ought to turn to God, while there is still time. If you have not become a child of God, talk to your parents or to a church leader about it today.

Pray for those you know who do not belong to God.

27The Kingdom of God

Ecclesiastes 1:2—“Vanity of vanities, saith the ______________, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.”

In today’s verse, the word vanity means without meaning. Everything in this life is without meaning, says Solomon. Nothing means a thing. Sadly, this is the thinking of many people in the world today. Don’t worry about anything—because nothing matters at all. This is how life in the world appears when you look at it without any belief in God. Is this how you view your life? Trusting in God adds meaning to your life in every way.

Ask God to help you fight against the attitude that says “whatever!” Trust in Him with all your heart.

1 Corinthians 8:5-6—“For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in ____________, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and ________ Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”

This week you have looked at several different ways people think about what their life means. Some people live only for their own pleasure. Oth-ers choose to serve a “god” other than the one true God. Some people just don’t want to think about it right now. And some believe that nothing has any meaning. What do you believe? In today’s passage, the Apostle Paul says that unbelievers have many “gods” to choose from. However, there is only one true God—the God who created everything and who sent His Son, Jesus, to save His people from their sins. Have you put your trust in this God? Is your heart bowed in obedience to this true Lord of all?

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PATHDirections: Read the Bible passage below. Using colored pencils or crayons, trace the path of the broad path and the narrow path.

Action: On which path are you headed? The Bible says there is only one way to heaven (see Acts 4:12 and John 14:6). If you have chosen Jesus to be your Savior, then pray right now and thank Him for making you His child. If you haven’t yet asked Jesus to forgive your sin and make you His child, you can do that right now. Be sure to share with others how you are God’s child. Everyone needs to hear this good news!

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Matthew 7:13-14

32 The Kingdom of God

WHAT IS THE PATH TO GOD?Last week you learned some of the different ways people answer the question, “What is the purpose of your life?” Many people live only for their own pleasure, choosing not to trust in the one true God. But what is the path for those seeking after God? Are there many different ways to God? This week as you study your Bible, you will discover what God’s Word says about finding the only way to God. If you have already become a child of God, the Bible study this week will help you understand your salvation better and help you be better able to explain it to someone else.

Matthew 7:13-14—“Enter ye in at the ___________ gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and _______________ is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

“You have your way to God, and I have mine,” Allen’s school friend told him. Some people believe there are many different ways to come to God. God teaches in His Word that there is only one way to come to Him. In today’s passage, the word strait means narrow. Today’s verses teach that the path to God has a narrow gate, and the way is hard. The highway that leads to death and destruction is wide and easy to find. Which path are you traveling on?

Thank God that He has given you His Word so you can learn the way to Him. Ask Him to give you faith to believe His Word.

Isaiah 45:18—“For thus saith the Lord that ________________ the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he ________________ it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else.”

33The Kingdom of God

Are you seeking God and His truth? In order to find Him, you must believe that He exists. Today’s verse states that truly there is a God over all—and this God created all things. “I am the Lord; and there is none else,” says the one true God. There are no other gods. The world did not make itself. Humans did not just appear one day. A powerful God created all things for His own good purposes.

Thank God that He is powerful and in control of all things. Thank Him that He is also good and faithful.

Habakkuk 1:13a—“Thou art of purer ___________ than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity.”

God is holy and pure. He is completely good and loving. No evil exists in Him. Today’s verse says that God is so pure that He cannot allow evil into His presence. Evil and sin entered this world when the first humans, Adam and Eve, disobeyed God’s rules. Adam’s sinful heart was passed to his children and to his grandchildren. In fact, every person born since Adam has inherited his sinful nature. Therefore, every person—including you—has a sinful heart that cannot approach God. Your own sin is the great barrier between you and the one true God.

Thank God that He is holy and pure. Ask Him to help you understand what you are learning.

James 2:10—“For whosoever shall keep the whole _____________, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of ________.”

“But I’m a good person!” someone might say after reading today’s verse. Do you feel that you are good enough to come to God just as you are? Yesterday you learned that because of Adam’s sin, you were born with a sinful heart. Today’s verse says that even if you only mess up on one small part of God’s

law, you are as guilty as if you had disobeyed all of God’s law. No person alive has the power to perfectly keep God’s law because everyone has a sinful heart. Look into your own life—are you a sinner? Have you perfectly kept God’s law? Only those who are perfectly holy, without any sin, are worthy to come to God. How then can any person come to God?

Thank God that in His love, He provided a way for you to be accepted by Him.

John 14:6—“Jesus saith unto him, I am the __________, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by ________.”

No sinful person may approach God. Because you were born with a sinful heart, even the good things you do are stained with your pride and selfishness. This is the curse of sin. So how may a sinful person ever come to God? Today’s verse gives the wonderful answer. Jesus, God’s own Son, came to this world and declared that through Him you may come to God. Tomorrow you will learn how this is possible.

Thank God for sending His Son to make a way for you to come to Him. Ask Him to help you understand what you are learning.

1 John 2:1-2—“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an _______________ with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole _____________.”

Look at today’s verse again. What label is given to Jesus Christ? He is called Jesus Christ the righteous. No sinful person can claim to be righteous (without any sin). Jesus, however, was born with a pure, holy heart. He did not have Adam’s sinful nature. Jesus is God Himself. He lived a perfect life with no sin. Imagine there is a list somewhere of every wrong thing you have done or will do during your lifetime. When you trust in Jesus to save you, it’s as

though God super-glues the record of Jesus’ perfect life on top of yours and counts it as your own record. But that’s not all. Jesus took your sins upon Himself and paid for them by dying on the cross. Not only are you given Jesus’ righteousness, but your sins are paid for by His death. This wonderful exchange happens when you put your trust in Jesus as your only hope for being accepted and loved by God.

Thank God for the gift of His Son, Jesus. Thank Him that He has made a way for you to come to Him, even though you are sinful.

John 6:40—“And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and ____________________ on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Today’s verse tells what Jesus Himself said about those who believe in Him for salvation. He told His followers that whoever believed on Him would live forever and would be raised up to dwell with God when life on this earth is over. Jesus made this possible when He Himself rose from the dead and returned to heaven. Have you trusted in Jesus? Jesus is the only path to the one true God.

Dear God, I know I am a sinner and that there is nothing I can do to make up for my sins in Your eyes. You are the holy, true God. Please forgive my sins and adopt me as Your own dear child. I trust in Jesus, Your Son, to take my sins from me and to give me His own righteousness before Your face. From this day forward, I give to You my life and everything I am. In Jesus’ name I come to You. Amen.

MEASURE NUMBERS–In the musical excerpt below from “The Club Song,” locate the numbers above the left end of each staff system. Draw a box around measure numbers: 21, 23, and 25.

In our music lesson today, we are learning about MODULATION. In measures 30 to 31 of “The Club Song” on page 9, a key change leads the music a WHOLE STEP HIGHER. Using modulation, the song changes keys from B to C.

Listen as your captain plays “The Club Song” recording. When you hear measures 30-31, notice that the music goes higher. This is a beautiful effect to make the song sound more interesting.

SISSY'S MUSIC CORNER

Finding measures–Starting with measure 21 in the musical excerpt above, count measures across the staff systems (21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26) to practice locating measures that do not have numbers. Sometimes when your captain is giving instructions during rehearsal, you will need to locate measures very quickly.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I BECOME GOD’S CHILD?

After Jonathan prayed, he opened his eyes very slowly. Then he wiggled his fingers and toes and waited to see if he felt any different. He had just asked God to save Him. Would fireworks go off in the sky above him? Would he look or feel different now that he had trusted in Jesus to save him? Maybe you’ve wondered the same thing. As you have your quiet time each day this week, you will learn what happens when you trust in God for salvation—whether you feel it or not.

Psalm 103:12—“As far as the ____________ is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”

When you trust in God to save you, He forgives your sins. Today’s verse says He “removes” your sins from you. This is true not only of the sins you have already done but of all the sins you will commit during your entire life. On the basis of Jesus’ death in your place, God completely forgives your sins—past, present, and future. Even though you will still disobey God and fail to do all He commands you, in God’s eyes you are wearing Jesus’ righteousness and are completely pure.

Thank God that He looks on you and sees Jesus’ purity instead of your sinfulness. Ask Him to help you serve Him today.

Ezekiel 36:27—“And I will put my ____________within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”

Yesterday you learned that God forgives your sins when you become a Christian. Today’s verse says that God sends His Spirit to live within you. The Holy Spirit is with you all the time, so you are never alone or

separated from God. God’s Spirit helps you understand His Word and obey it. He comforts you with truth when you are having trouble and feeling badly. God’s Spirit also works in your life to make you more and more like Jesus. Do you feel God’s Spirit inside you? Probably not at first; however, as you grow in your Christian walk, you will come to sense His presence with you more and more.

Thank God for the gift of His Spirit.

2 Corinthians 5:17—“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new ____________: old things are passed away; behold, ______ things are become new.”

When you become a child of God, your personality doesn’t change, and you don’t look any different than you did before. However, as today’s verse teaches, you become a “new creature” on the inside. Through the power of His Spirit living inside you, God begins to change the things you love, your attitudes, and your goals for the future. These changes do not happen all at once but over time as you read and obey God’s Word.

Thank God that He changes you from the inside out. Ask Him to help you take time to read His Word and pray every day.

Galatians 4:4-6—“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the __________, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are __________, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”

How should someone approach the God of the universe? He knows all things and His power has no limit. With one word He could destroy all of creation. Should you crawl on your belly before Him in great fear and dread?

41The Kingdom of God

All of this is true about God. However, when you trust in Jesus to save you, God adopts you into His family as His own dear child. As the King’s adopted son or daughter, you now have the privilege of calling Him your Father, and you may come to Him freely at any time and without any fear. God delights over you and welcomes you always with great love and tenderness.

Thank God that He loves you as your Heavenly Father. Ask Him to help you love, honor, and obey Him as you ought.

John 10:27-29—“My sheep hear my ___________, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is _________________ than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

Jason stomped his foot and walked toward the front door. “I won’t clean my room!” he told his mother. “I don’t want to be in this family any more!” Jason’s actions were very disobedient and wrong. But did his sin cause him to stop being in his family? Of course not. The same is true for the family of God. Once God has adopted you into His family, nothing can take you away from Him—not even your own sin and childishness. Your soul is kept safe in the Father’s hand, and no power (not even your own) can cause God to let you go.

Thank God that your soul is safely kept in His all-powerful hand. Ask Him to help you obey Him in love all the days of your life.

Romans 8:38-39—“For I am persuaded, that neither __________, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to ________________ us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

42 The Kingdom of God

Have you ever been in a very crowded place where you were afraid of being separated from your family? It can be very scary to lose sight of the people you trust to keep you safe. God gives incredible comfort and security to His children by promising that nothing—NOTHING—can separate you from His love and care for you, not even death.

Thank God that you are safely held by His power. Ask Him to help you trust in Him today.

John 14:2-3—“In my Father’s house are many ________________: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a ______________ for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

Being in a family means you have a place where you belong. This place is called home. Home is wherever your parents and brothers and sisters are—whether it is a palace or a tent. Jesus promised His followers that He would return to heaven (His home) and that He would make a place there for each of God’s people. If you are God’s child, this promise is for you. No matter what your home is like in this world, God will take you to live in His glorious heavenly home when your life here is over.

Thank your Heavenly Father for the wonderful home you will enjoy in heaven. Thank Him for giving you eternal life.

The singer holds the final pitch for one and one-half measures on the word “God!” The song feels like it has two counts per measure. Count: 1 - 2 | 1 - Off. Watch your director to see exactly when to cut off!

KNOWING FOR SUREHow do you know you are God’s child? God’s Word tells you what to look for in your life to know if you are truly one of God’s own children. This week as you have your devotions, you will learn seven signs that help you know you are a Christian.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4—“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ ____________ for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he ___________ again the third day according to the scriptures.”

“I’ve always been a Christian,” said Mark to his friend, “but I don’t really believe the stuff about Jesus being God and rising from the dead.” Is Mark truly a Christian? First sign: to be a child of God, you must believe the doctrine that is found in today’s passage: that Jesus died for your sins, was buried, and rose again. Do you believe these events truly happened and that Jesus died for you?

Thank God for His grace and love towards His children. Ask Him to give you courage to tell others about your Savior, Jesus Christ.

John 8:42—“Jesus said unto them, If ___________ were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent ____________.”

Kylie fell down and hurt her knee. Many people stopped to help her, but Kylie got up and ran to a tall man nearby. “Daddy, I’m hurt!” she cried, throwing herself into his arms. Where do you turn when you are in trouble? Today’s verse says that if God is your Father, you will love Him. When you love someone, that person is often on your mind. You think

of ways to please and spend time with that person. Second sign: do you love your Heavenly Father?

Thank God that He is your Father. Ask Him to help you love Him more every day.

Psalm 119:14-16—“I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all _______________. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy ______________.”

“Daddy sent me a letter!” shouted Marcus waving it in the air as he ran to the porch. His father was a soldier and had been gone from home for many months. Every letter from him was read and re-read with great love and interest. If you are a child of God, the Bible ought to be even more precious to you than letters from your loved ones. God Himself has given you His Words of love and His promises of care for you. In the pages of the Bible you can come to know God and His plan for your life. Third sign: loving God’s Word is a sign that you belong to Him.

Thank God for the gift of His Word. Ask Him to help you read it every day.

1 John 3:14—“We know that we have passed from ______________ unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth _____________ his brother abideth in death.”

Last week you learned that God gives His Spirit to those who trust in Him for salvation. Together, all of God’s people are called the “body of Christ,” and God’s Spirit living within them binds them together in love. Fourth sign: if you are truly God’s child, you will feel love for other Christians. You will want to help them when they are in trouble, and

you will want to be around them. This is not an action that you “put on” or fake. It is a special work that God does in your heart to change you, and it is very real to those who have experienced it. Do you love other Christians?

Thank God for the work of His Spirit in your heart. Ask Him to help you love those around you today.

Psalm 27:4—“One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may _____________ in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the ______________ of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.”

“Do we have to go to church?” Brandon asked his parents. “A lot of my friends do fun things on Sundays.” Although a child of God may sometimes feel this way, those who belong to God grow to love going to church and worshiping Him with their church family. Sundays ought to feel like a family reunion for God’s people as they gather around God’s throne, share their burdens and joys, and raise their voices to praise their Heavenly Father. Their souls are fed and comforted as God gives His Word to them through the preaching of their pastor. Fifth sign: you should desire to gather with God’s people.

Thank God for your church family and for your minister. Ask God to help your pastor faithfully preach the truth of God’s Word every week.

2 Thessalonians 1:3-4—“We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith _________________ exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; So that we ourselves ______________ in you in the

churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure.”

In today’s passage, Paul wrote that the Christians in Thessalonica were growing greatly in faith, love for one another, and patience. However, this growth was happening at the same time the church was suffering great trouble and persecution. This is a very important lesson for you to remember: those who truly belong to God will turn to God and grow when trouble comes—rather than turning away from Him and blaming Him in anger. Sixth sign: Are you suffering any trouble, and does it draw you closer to your Heavenly Father—or drive you away from Him?

Thank God that He uses the very hard things of life to cause His children to grow. Ask Him to make you a faithful child who trusts in Him even in trouble.

Psalm 37:23-24—“The ____________ of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast _____________: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.”

One-year-old Jaycie was learning to walk. Even though she was doing very well, her father still held her hand when they walked places. If she stumbled, he could keep her from falling down. Today’s verse says this is how God cares for His own children. They may stumble and fail, have bad days, and become weak in their faith. However, God will not allow them to remain fallen if they belong to Him. He will always draw them back to Himself, rescue them from their sinful choices, and restore their faith in Him. Seventh sign: when you stumble in your Christian life, do you find God restoring you and bringing you back to Him?
