Sahuarita High School
Principals Corner—John Kneup
Notes from Counseling
Sahuarita Mustang Community,
The end of the quarter is upon us and fall break is about to begin. Fall break is a great time to think about
and make plans for college and life after high school. Here is a list of things juniors and seniors should be
doing during fall break and the rest of this semester.
Seniors
ALL STUDENTS SHOULD complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Go to
FAFSA.ed.gov/ to complete the application. See what types of grants (free money!) and student loans
you qualify for.
Fill out your college applications.
Sign up to take the ACT or SAT. Go to ACT.org and/or collegeboard.com to schedule the test.
Send SAT scores to colleges you are applying for.
Use College Search to compare different colleges side by side and decide where to apply.
https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-search
Work on Application Essays and APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS!!!
Juniors
Begin looking for colleges you like and start a college list.
Talk to your family about how to pay for college.
Find out how colleges use admission tests.
Choose an activity to focus on. Let colleges see that you can follow through on a commitment.
Take the PSAT. This is administered at SHS on October 24.
Work hard!
The school year only gets faster and this is a great time to get these things done! Please contact me or your
counselor if you have questions about any of these items.
Regards,
John Kneup

The first few weeks of school were busy in the SHS Library! New math books were barcoded and distributed for student use. Following this, Library Orientation was in full swing with a Jeop-ardy-like review game for upperclassmen and a Kahoot (an online question game) for the 9th graders. Recently, a new Chromebook cart and Chromebooks arrived which are being readied for classroom use!

The SHS Mustangs Football Team is off to a great start. Currently, the Mustangs are 4-2 with half of the regular season yet to come. The crowds in the stands are proof that the excitement is definitely back both at home and on the road. The Roughriders make the most noise by far. SHS has only groups of its kind in the “Keepers of the Captain’s Bell” and “Dutch, the Air Raid Siren”. You can find them in the sidelines of every game! The remaining schedule: 10/5 (A) vs Pusch Ridge 10/12 (A) vs Catalina Magnet 10/19 (A) vs Sabino 10/26 (H) vs Tanque Verde We look forward to seeing you come out. Let’s fill the stands and support the Blue and Gold!
Mustang Girls and Boys Golf
Mustang Athletics
(Sept 26th) The golf team is winding down their regular season. The Mustangs have 4
matches left. The team is currently 10-1-1 in dual matches. Freshman, Luis Lopez is on pace to qualify for state and leads the squad with an average score of 38.2 for 9 holes. Freshman, Kaden Boyter is also on pace to qualify for state with an average score of 39.6 in qualifying rounds. For the girls, freshman, Rylee Koebnick is just outside the top 18 individuals that will qualify for state. Rylee currently is ranked 20th.
The winter and spring sports are always looking for new athletes. This would be a good time to work on improving your grades and meeting all of the physical requirements to go out for a sports team. Please see Mr. Stratton or the sports coaches. The front office has the athletic participation check list packets available. Go Mustangs!

Message from Officer Al Guest - SHS School Resource Officer
Mustang Nation,
We are now double digits days away from the holiday season. I want you to know that each and every one of you matter! Your lives are valuable and you all make up the very fabric that defines our community. I also look forward to seeing your future contributions to our society. With that said, please, please DRIVE TO AR-RIVE. Don’t allow your ego or a mentality of “I’ll show him/her” derail you from ar-riving at your location safely. Often when we are cut off in traffic or somebody turns in front of us we are quick to react in a volatile manner. Take a moment to process what happened and back away from whoever cut you off. Simply give them their space. Don’t get involved in showing the other motorist physical ges-tures or screaming out the window. Make sure your passengers don’t get in-volved either. Taking a couple minutes to cool down is a far better solution than getting connected to a motorist in a road rage incident. Fight the urge to have the last word and remember eight hours later the incident will be an afterthought and a story to tell over a good cup of coffee. Don’t allow anybody to control your emo-tions and throw you into a fit of rage. Once you have allowed a fellow motorist to “run you up the flag pole” emotionally you have placed yourself in checkmate status. Remember, you’re possibly going to make a mistake, and cut someone off by accident. Don’t let the SIMPLE MISTAKES SHAPE THE REST OF YOUR
LIFE.
Here are a few Arizona Laws you could potentially violate if you decide to clash with a motorist while either driving or parking your vehicle. A.R.S. 13-1202, Threatening or Intimidating A.) “A person commits threatening or intimidating if the person threats or intimidates by word or conduct.” Please see the aforemen-tioned Arizona state statue for additional information. A.R.S. 13-1203, Assault A.) “A person commits assault by: Intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causing any physical injury to another person.” Please see the aforementioned Arizona state statute for additional information.
Please be safe throughout the weeks to come and DO NOT ALLOW ANYBODY
TO DECIDE YOUR DESTINY.
“It is never too late to be what you might have been.” ~ George Eliot

(Sept 26th) Research, Research, Research!! Recently, Mrs. Bettis and Ms. Greer’s classes have been integrating 21st Century skills, Ancient Greek studies and the Big 6 Research proc-ess. While using databases, which were new to most 9th graders, students did a small research assignment in which they then had to summarize, analyze and reflect. The unit was packed with new skills and content as well as review of topics such as avoiding plagiarism and citing sources.
(Database that were used for this project can be integrated into any research!! A link to these can be found on the Library web page under “Research Resources” then Digital AZ Library-Databases)
(Sept 26th) Makerspace has been busy trying to troubleshoot an issue with their 3-D printer. They discovered a problem with damp filament. Designed items were not printing correctly. After searching the Internet, they discovered that using a food dehydrator, desiccant and keeping the filament in airtight boxes will help solve the problem. Members used problem-solving skills successfully! At our last Thursday meeting, project ideas were discussed. Some pos-sible ideas included building a DIY drone and creating a hydroponic gar-den. Potential fundraisers were also discussed.
