Dear friends,
Here is the rst annual report of the Swiss
organization Sagarmatha, which gives anoverview of its activities in 2011.
Our main goal is to promote and protect theexistence of the orphanage Sagarmatha inKathmandu (Nepal). This welcome centreprovides shelter and education for more than50 children and teenagers who come fromfamilies in a difcult situation.
After several eld visits made by students from
the International School of Geneva (LaChâtaigneraie Campus) it was decided to setup a Swiss branch for the organization, inorder to provide support to the orphanage. Our General Assembly took place on 12thDecember 2010. Our nancial support and our
involvement complement the activities of 2other organizations involved in Nepal: Association Médecins Toit du Monde andSagarmatha Aide aux Défavorisés (the latestbeing the one which set up the orphanage.)
This year, a visit from the students from theInternational School in Kathmandu wasorganized for the third time (please see www.sassnepal.org.np for the report). That visitincreased their awareness of living conditionsmuch harsher than the ones in Switzerland. This mission was the most successful one, by
far. Once in the orphanage, a lot of students worked to improve the livesof the children, and back in their country they continue to maintain anddevelop fund raising activities. A big thank you to all of them.
There will be numerous challenges in 2012 : building an extension to the
existing structure, with a new kitchen and refectory in the basement, along with new dorms on the rst oor, preparing the new mission of
April 2013, setting up a website for the Swiss branch, etc. I’d like tothank all the people who helped us in 2011 : the students’ parents, ourdonors, our volunteers… I hope that next year many of you will keephelping the children of Sagarmatha!

The “Children of Sagarmatha”orphanage
Nepal is one of the poorest countries in theworld. The life expectancy is 62 years for menand 63 for women, which is below the worldaverage rate. According to UNICEF, themortality rate for children under 5 years old was50 % in 2010, with about one million orphans(3,4 % of the Nepalese population), and thegure is constantly increasing.
Children of Sagarmatha is an orphanage set upin October 2002 in Kathmandu. The goal is toprovide care and support for children who wentthrough challenging times (abandoned childrenliving in the streets or in women’s prisons, victims of trafc, prostitution, violence, etc.) The
orphanage provides them with a stablesurrounding which resembles family life, andwith a comprehensive school education. In thisorphanage, children can live a well-balancedlife, have a future and later become “actors ofchange” in their own country.
There are 52 children, aged from 5 to 18 years, currently living in the orphanage. They are fed, housed, taken careof and taught inside the sameinfrastructure. The orphanageoperates under the supervisionof a local NGO named SASS(Sagarmatha Asahaya SewaSangh), that manages allmatters related to theorphanage. Since 2005, theInternational School of Geneva
(La Châtaigneraie campus) hasbeen providing support to theorphanage. In December 2010,the Swiss branch of theorganization Sagarmatha set upa partnership with theorphanage.
Children who joined the orphanage Children ofSagarmatha come from all castes and allregions in Nepal. They all led a difcult life,
having to look every day for means of support, until they had the chance to be taken in byChildren of Sagarmatha. The orphanage isactually more a real family than a welcomecentre. Children consider the director Phinzoand his wife (and co-director) Beena as theirsurrogate parents, and all the people living inthe place have nicknames like Brother, Uncle,Sister, etc.
Partnerships
The political crisis which has been raging inNepal led to many deaths in the remote areasof the country. That situation increased theneed for care for orphans who had no means ofsupport. As a result, the orphanage Children ofSagarmatha is trying to set up nancial
partnerships to continue its activities and givethese children a real future. These partnershipsare expected to cover the daily costs of thislarge family made of 55 people. Several

different projects have been submitted toprivate funding, such as sponsoring children, nancing construction work to extend the
existing facilities, paying for the adjustment ofthe kitchen and the refectory to meet hygieneregulations, etc.
Children sponsorship
Sponsoring a child has a huge impact on his/ her life. With 60 euros per month donated byhis or her godfather/godmother, the child canlive in the orphanage in good conditions andfollow a comprehensive cycle of studies until
the end of high school. The sponsor iscommitted to sending 60 euros to theorganisation on a monthly basis, along, ifpossible, with a letter. In turn, Sagarmathasends a report with mails and pictures whichkeep him/her informed about the progressmade by the child. A monthly direct debitoption is offered to make the management ofboth the sponsor’s and the orphanage’sresources easier.
Today, less than 10 children are sponsored via
the Swiss branch of Sagarmatha. Assponsorships are supposed to cover almost50% of the orphanage’s nancial resources,
there is a crucial need for more of them. In2011, several children left the orphanage aftercompleting their high school education, andnew children will be taken in to replace them. However, due to the economic crisis, attractingnew sponsors bas been increasingly difcult.
The Swiss organization is trying to do its best topromote the orphanage’s activities, especiallythrough the International School of Geneva (LaChâtaigneraie campus) and its humanitariantravels. Each eld mission reminds us of the
vital importance of the support, both nancial
and emotional, provided by sponsorships.
Assessment mission : April 2011
Following the partnership established betweenthe International School of Geneva and theorphanage, an assessment mission wasorganized in Kathmandu in April. The goal wasfor some “Ecolint” students to be involved in a
humanitarian activity. 28 students and 4teachers spent 12 days in the orphanage, fromthe 8th to the 20th of April, met the children, spent some time together, evaluated theirneeds and also helped them to prepare thestart of their new school year.
The preparation of the mission was led by thestudents themselves, under the supervision oftheir teacher Olivier Revaz. During the schoolyear 2010-2011, fundraising events like theBike The Lake race were set up along withregular information meetings. These effortsenabled the students to collect US $ 18’000and to prepare their mission in the best way.
One of their goals was to bring schoolstationary (bags, pens, notebooks and schoolbooks) to the children who lack basic schoolmaterial, and to manage the costs of the nextschool year. The students also brought 10computers in order to provide children with an

access to technology to increase theirknowledge via Internet. 5 PCs were donated tothe children of the orphanage, 5 others werebrought to a school in Solukhumbu, a remoteand very poor area of Nepal. The childrens’other needs (such as shoes, clothes, vitaminsand medication, private racks) were also takencare of. Francis Laune, President of the Frenchbranch (Sagarmatha Aide aux Défavorisés),organized the students’ daily activities oncethey arrived in the orphanage.
Several other projects were also offered to thestudents, on a volunteer basis. The number ofprojects shows how deep the students felt
concerned about the children. All of thestudents asked to be involved as much aspossible into the life of the orphanage, byundertaking tasks like painting the doors, thecorridors and the stairs of the house, repairingthe basket panel or buying some washingproducts, setting up drawing, music and gamesclasses, buying a new TV set and organizing abig farewell party with the children. All theseactivities created a strong relationship betweenthem all, and the children of the orphanagenamed the students after their own family by
calling them « big brother » or « big sister ».
All the children spent some very exciting daystogether. The projects were important, and thelinks established between children from thewestern and the eastern part of the worldremain unforgettable. This mission gave them
the opportunity to share strong and lovingmoments together, where the mere presence ofeveryone was a reason for smiling, for cryingalso when it was time to leave, and above allfor having fun and being happy together.
