    SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Preface: This document provides systemapplication information on VPSDistribution Bay Model 1231V1, Spec.

No. 582121901. The following is ageneral description of the completesystem which includes distribution baysand power bays.

Description: A -48VDC @ up to 10,000 amperespower system (eight power bays plus amain and supplemental distribution bay,the system may contain up to threeadditional supplemental distributionbays).

    The Vortex

    product line is a complete

integrated power system containingpower conversion, intelligent monitoring, and distribution. This Vortex

    Power

System (VPS) typically consists of ...

    VPS Power Bays

The VPS Power Bays (Spec. No.582121100, 582121300, 582121700,or 582122100) house the PowerConversion Units (PCUs). Thissystem can consist of one (1) toeight (8) power bays, each of whouses up to seven (7) PCUs. This

document does not describe the VPSPower Bay. Refer to VPS PowerBay System Application GuSAG582121100, SAG582121300,SAG582121700, or SAG582122100.

    SAG582122100).

    VPS Power Conversion Units(PCUs)

The PCUs provide load power, battery float current, and batteryrecharge current during normaloperating conditions. This documentdoes not describe the PCUs. The

PCUs are described in the VPSPower Bay System ApplicationGuide (SAG582121100,SAG582121300, SAG582121700, or Main Bay

    VPS Meter-Control -Alarm(MCA) Panel

Houses the MCA. The MCAcontrols the operation of up to fifty-six (56) PCUs and providessystem metering, control, andalarm functions. The MCA islocated in the main VPSDistribution Bay. This documentdoes not describe the MCA. TheMCA is described in the VPSPower Bay SystemGuide (SAG582121100,SAG582121300, SAor SAG582122100

    VPS Distribution Bays

The VPS Distribution Bay providesDC distribution through fusesand/or circuit breakers. Thesystem can consist of one (1) tofive (5) VPS Distribution Bays.

The VPS Distribution Bays aredesigned to accept VPSdistribution bus modules and VPSbattery disconnect modules. Thedistribution bus modules provide achoice of fuse and circuit breakertypes and sizes. The batterydisconnect module provides aconnection point for a battery

string and a battery disconnectcontactor for that battery string. Aswitch is provided to manuallyconnect or disconnect the batterystring from the system. Provisionis made for connection of anemergency shutdown and firealarm disconnect switch. Refer tothe LIST DESCRIPTIONS sectionof this document for illustrations ofthe available VPS distribution busmodules and VPS batterydisconnect module.

This power system can consist ofup to five (5) VPS DistributionBays. One (1) main bay and up tofour (4) supplemental bays. Themain bay accepts up to six (6)modules (distribution and/orbattery disconnect). Eachsupplemental bay accepts up toeight (8) modules (distribution

and/or battery disconnect). The bays are split in a Side A and Side Bconfiguration. Distribution and battery disconnect modules cannot be installedon the same side of a bay. Each type may be installed on separate sides of a bay.

    Integrated LMS1000Monitoring System

The distribution bays contain an integrated LMS1000 Monitoring System. The LMS1000Monitoring System consists of an LMS1000 Main Cabinet, optional Expansion Cabinet, and Expansion Assemblies. The LMS1000 Main Cabinet is always mounted in the mainDistribution Bay. Each distribution bay (main and supplemental) always contain twoLMS1000 Expansion Assemblies. The Expansion Assemblies are factory wired tomonitor the left and right sides of the distribution bays (all distribution shuntmeasurements, CB/FA alarms, and control fuse alarms). The LMS1000 Main Cabinet isfactory wired to the LMS1000 Expansion Assemblies in the main bay. Simple LMS1000network cable connections interconnect the supplemental bays' Expansion Assembliesback to the LMS1000 Main Cabinet. In addition, the LMS1000 Main Cabinet accepts upto ten input/output (I/O) cards of various types to monitor external points. An optionalLMS1000 Expansion Cabinet can be provided which also accepts up to ten I/O cards foradditional monitoring points. Refer to the LMS1000 System Application Guide

    (SAG586505000) for additional information.
