When we breathe, we are absorbing the gas (Air) into our bodies through our

lungs and into our bloodstream and to our tissues…

Of the Oxygen (gas) we breathe (around 20.9%) is absorbed But only 4-5% is used by our bodies the

rest is expired when we breathe out…

Every Cell in the Body NEEDS OXYGEN to survive…

But in the Air we breathe there is another gas… (N2) Nitrogen and this gas is NOT used by our bodies and

is referred to as Inert…

All Diving has risks and understanding these risks can help you to better

manage them…

The First and MOST Important thing to understand is that when we descend in a

Water Column….

We are under Pressure

We are on gassing… This simply means we are absorbing the gas in

our breathing mix at a rate proportional to the surrounding pressure..

Why is this important?

This is important because the amount of gas that is dissolved into your blood and

tissues…

Will determine your safe rate of ascent back to the surface…

AVOIDING INJURY….

As when we ascend again (as we must!) Our bodies release the excess absorbed gas at a

rate proportional to our ascent (Drop in Pressure)

This process of ascent is the action of “DECOMPRESSION” and it is the most important thing to fully understand…

On ascent the amount of gas that remains in your body…

Needs to expand slowly and be released.

This process is called Off-Gassing

Overview of Dive Safety

• Always descend at a rate that is “Comfortable”• ALWAYS ASCEND FROM DEPTH IN A

CONTROLLED MANNER• If we ascend too fast we risk two problems…

– An Uncontrolled Ascent (Coming up too Fast)

–DECOMPRESSION SICKNESS or INJURY

• ALWAYS MAKE STOPS• KNOW AND PRACTICE SAFETY DRILLS

• Know and Understand your Equipment• Dive in a Calm and Controlled way

– Do NOT Over Exert Yourself (Work too Hard)

–AVOID SKIP BREATHING / BREATH HOLDING

• Understand the Principles of Self Rescue• Learn as Much as Possible about Physics• NEVER DIVE with or accept responsibility for

others with less experience then yourself.

• Learn as much as possible about dive theory• Learn and Study about…

– Risks Assessment & Accident Prevention

–CPR First Aid & Dive Medic First Aid• Understand Diving Physiology• Get as much diving experience as possible• If you are serious about diving, get serious

about Dive Safety – Share this with others…

• Study and Practice Dive Planning• DO NOT EVER DIVE IF….

– The Dive is beyond your experience & training

–You or any member of your group feel unwell

The more you know and understand about Dive Theory will make you a better and Safer Diver but Only practice and training under supervision will

give you the SAFE EXPERIENCE….
