The annual CROP Walk is sched-uled for Sunday, Octo-ber 7. Registration at 1:30 PM and the Walk begins at 2:00 PM at the court house. Please consider becoming a walker and collecting donations for this impor-tant effort to prevent and remediate hun-ger. Sign up sheets are in the Gathering Space. Twenty-five percent of donations will stay in Jasper County, to be divided between the Salvation Army and county food pan-tries. The rest will support hunger-fighting and clean water projects around the world. Something you may not know is that you can designate that your contribution goes to Catholic Relief Services. Please do this. One out of every 7 people in the world lives in hunger. Each day almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes- that’s one every 5 seconds. Please show your gratitude if you are not one of the hungry by helping to make this year’s CROP Walk a success. To participate in the walk or leave a donation, contact Barb Gannon at 792-4385.

Saturday Evening Mass Times

The decision has been made and has been approved by the Pastoral Council concern-ing the time for the Saturday anticipatory Mass. This is our newly adopted policy: On those weekends on which the Saturday or Sunday falls in the months of December,

January, or February, the Saturday afternoon/evening Mass will be celebrated at 4:00, with confessions being heard from 3:00 to 3:30. The first weekend in 2012 to be effected by this change is the weekend of December 1/2.

Marriage Moments & Parenting Pointers

"What were you arguing about?...If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last." (Mk 9:33, 35) This teaching of Jesus parallels the perennial marital argument about who is right. Arguments can often be shortened if you can give up the need to be right - every time. One of the Spiritual Works of Mercy is to "Counsel the Doubtful." Parents can some-times doubt whether they are being too strict or too lenient with discipline; too generous or too tight with giving their kids money... Check your doubts with other wise parents

Food Pantry Sunday Are you ready to fight hunger right here in our community? The first Sunday of each month has been designated as Food Pantry Sunday. Members of our parish are invited to bring nonperishable food items or monetary gifts on

the first Sunday of each month to donate to the food pantry. Place your donations in the shopping cart in the vestibule of the church.

The Library’s Latest

Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items in the library. The parish library has some books and many DVDs in Spanish for both chil-dren and adults. The librarian is available after both weekend Masses to gladly assist you in selecting some. From time to time we hear or see references to Eucharistic mira-cles. Joan Cruz investi-gated 36 ecclesiastically authenticated miracles. The earliest occurred in the 8th century and the latest in 1970. Cruz’s pur-pose in writing Eucharis-tic Miracles was to develop a deeper appre-ciation of the mystery of the Eucha-rist. Come check this out and see if she suc-ceeded. The Library is open after weekend Masses or by appointment. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

RESTLESS HEART The first feature-length film on the life of St. Augustine of Hippo, one of Christendom’s most beloved figures.

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 @ 7 PM Pella Opera House, Pella Iowa

Filmed in Europe, RESTLESS HEART is the first full-length fea-ture movie on St. Augustine. Born in North Africa, Augustine studied in Carthage, be-coming an accomplished but dissolute orator. Af-ter converting to Manichaeism, a guilt-free religion, he was called to the imperial court in Mi-

lan to serve as an opponent to the Christian Bishop Ambrose. But when the Empress Justina sent imperial guards to clear out a basilica where Augustine's mother, Monica, was worshipping, her constant prayers and the wit-ness of Ambrose won him over to Christianity. Serving in Hippo in 430 AD, Bishop Augustine urged the Roman gar-rison to negotiate with the Vandal King Genseric, but they proudly refused. He passed up a chance to escape on a ship sent to rescue him by the Pope, and stayed by the side of his people. Christian Duguay directed the film, and the cast includes Franco Nero, Johannes Brandrup, Monica Guerri-tore and Alessandro Preziosi.

What is convalidation? My sister was divorced last year after 10 years in an abusive marriage. She’s met someone and wants to marry him. She’s eager to start her new life and doesn’t want to wait for an annulment. She plans

to be married next month by a judge and then have her marriage convalidated after her annulment is granted. What does that mean? Is it OK?

Jean Dear Jean, When Catholics who were married outside the Church want to have that marriage blessed by the Church, the blessing is performed in a ceremony called convalidation. But don’t get the wrong idea—this isn’t a way around the rules. A convali-dated marriage is sacramental, so your sister must meet the requirements all Catholics have to meet before marrying in the Church: They must be baptized, they can’t be too closely related to each other, they need permission from their pastor, they must be legally free to marry, and they must be free to marry in the Church. That last require-ment means that if your sister was sacramentally married to her first husband and he’s alive, she needs an annul-ment before her new marriage can be blessed by the Church in a convalidation ceremony. If her new marriage takes place in a Catholic church and is presided over by a Catholic priest or dea-con, rest assured that her new marriage will be valid in the eyes of the Church.

September 30, 2012 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Nm 11:25–29 / Jas 5:1–6 / Mk 9:38–43, 45, 47–48

As the saying goes, “Nobody likes a tattletale.” True, but I always enjoyed being a tattletale. Whether reporting my brothers’ incessant teasing or a classmate’s misbehavior, I liked feeling “morally superior” to others. I felt proud to serve as the police officer for good behavior in my world. Perhaps you’ve known —and even enjoyed—that somewhat smug feeling.

Joshua in today’s first reading and John in today’s Gospel do a bit of tattling as they complain to their leaders about people who appear to be outsiders acting in God’s name. Their complaints are dismissed because Moses and Jesus affirm that God knows no human boundaries, and these “outsiders” are doing the Lord’s work. Not only are the tattlers’ complaints rejected, but Jesus issues a challenge to turn the eyes of judgment inward. His images of cutting off limbs and plucking out eyes are dramatic, but his point is simple: Remove from yourself anything that causes you or others to sin. Stop worrying about others’ behavior and focus on purging yourself of sinful thoughts and actions. Seeing others’ faults comes easily—it’s more difficult to be the police officer of our own behaviors. Yet we’re called to be vigilant about removing elements that lead to sin. Perhaps we need to stop associating with people who gossip. Maybe we need to stop consuming alcohol because we’re disrespectful or engage in risky be-havior after a few drinks. Perhaps we need to stop nursing grudges and forgive someone who begs mercy from us. Can we look at ourselves with the observant eye of the tattletale and ask God to help us eliminate what leads us to sin?
