FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

ITEM ONE: TERM LIMITS Term limits aren’t limited to politicians but encompass pastors as well. It’s been Bishop DiMarzio’s long-standing policy that pastors in the Brooklyn Diocese should serve no more than two six-years terms in any given parish. It’s hard for me to believe but I’ve already completed twelve years here in Bayside, and so will be ending my time as pastor here at Sacred Heart come November 1ST. My next assignment will be as pastor of Holy Innocents Church in Brooklyn (279 E 17Th Street, Brooklyn 11226) - the neighboring parish to where I grew up. I hope to express my feelings of gratitude toward all of you in a future column but first want to introduce your new pastor – Msgr. Thomas C. Machalski, Jr. Many of you are long familiar with Father Tom who has been very much a part of the Bayside community throughout the years. As a newly-ordained, Father Tom served as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and, more recently, as Pastor of St. Josaphat’s. Father Tom brings many gifts, talents and skills to Sacred Heart. Having completed his Theology degree at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, he went on to earn an advanced degree in Canon Law and has served many years on the diocesan Tribunal. A fluent speaker of Polish, Father Tom has been deeply involved in ministering to the Polish-American community throughout the United States, having just completed his term as Rector of SS Cyril & Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Michigan, preparing foreign-born (mainly Polish) seminarians for ministry here in the U.S. I have known Father Tom since seminary days and am delighted he’ll be succeeding me. I’m certain he will be a wonderful pastor to the well-deserving parishioners of Sacred Heart. Father Tom begins his ministry here at Sacred Heart on November 1ST.

ITEM TWO: FATHER BROSNAN’S FAREWELL Join me for a Farewell Mass of Thanksgiving, Saturday October 21ST at the 5:00pm Mass, followed by a reception with Buffet Dinner in the Church Hall.

ITEM THREE: BLESSING OF ANIMALS In honor of Saint Francis of Assisi we will hold our annual Animal Blessing Ceremony on Sunday October 8TH immediately following the 12:30pm Mass in the rectory garden.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

ITEM FOUR: HURRICANE IRMA SPECIAL COLLECTION

At the request of Bishop DiMarzio, all parishes in the diocese will take a special second collection to aid in the relief efforts underway in Florida after the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irma. This second collection will be taken next weekend (October 7TH – 8TH). Monies will be distributed through Catholic Charities Disaster Relief Services.

ITEM FIVE: MASS SCHEDULE A few months back, as a flyer in the weekly bulletin, we distributed a letter from Bishop DiMarzio concerning declining Mass attendance and the current Mass schedule. The bishop indicated that, if attendance at a particular weekend Mass is less than half the capacity of the church, the dropping of that Mass would be an appropriate and responsible action to take. Our weekly statistics concerning Mass attendance shows that since 2006 the overall Mass attendance at Sacred Heart has declined 30%. The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) studied these statistics which also indicated that of the five weekend Masses, the 12:30pm Mass on Sunday has been the consistently least attended Mass over the past ten years; attendance being well below 50% of the total capacity of the church. The PPC agreed that, in accord with the bishop’s directive, it would be appropriate to drop the 12:30pm Mass beginning in January 2018. In order to accommodate those parishioners who now attend the 12:30pm Mass, the PPC wishes to poll the parish regarding the change in schedule. (Please note: the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday and the 5:00pm Mass on Sunday will remain unchanged). To that end we will conduct an anonymous poll at all Masses this weekend (September 30Th – October 1ST). The poll will be simple and straightforward. It will ask you to indicate which Mass you usually attend. And it will ask you to choose either to keep the 9:30am and 11:00am Masses as they are or change them by 30 minutes. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to express your preference concerning our future Mass schedule.
