Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
“The Lord is kind and merciful.” PS 103 R
Welcome Father Victor Warkulwiz!
Next weekend our parish will host Father Victor Warkulwiz who is a member of the Missionaries of the
Blessed Sacrament. Father Victor’s congregation’s special charism is to help promote and spread the
good news about Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Three years ago Father Victor came to Sacred Heart to help establish our Adoration Society. At that
time many people generously offered to become adorers. Throughout the last three years these
people have remained faithful to their weekly commitment of one hour of prayer before the Blessed
Sacrament. Some of our other adorers have since returned to the Lord, moved or were unsure to what
they committed when they first signed up to become a member of the adoration society and simply
stopped coming.
Our Chapel which is attached to the rectory and is available for prayer 24/7 is a beautiful and peaceful
place. I have lost count of the number of people who have stopped me to tell me how much better
their lives are since they began praying in the chapel. I have heard some wonderfully powerful stories of
renewal, healing and the mercies of God experienced. Please know, also, that we have many visitors to
the chapel from around the area who come from other parishes and are grateful for our chapel.
It is my hope that Father Victor’s presence will help stir up within our people the desire to spend quality
time with the Lord whose Eucharistic Presence is both a gift and mystery. Next week we will be invited
to commit to a weekly holy hour. I ask that you give serious thought to accepting this invitation which is
really a call to a deeper holiness.
In today’s bulletin there is an insert which sheds some light on Eucharistic Adoration. I ask that you
kindly read and reflect upon the insert’s message throughout the week and then come to listen to
Father Victor with an open heart next Sunday. God is never outdone in generosity. The generosity
which we show toward the Lord is always richly rewarded.
God love you! Father DiMaria
Front Step Fund – Thank you! Incredibly we are almost half way there! Last Sunday’s collection for the Front
Step Fund brought in $9,500.00 which is a tremendously generous response for
the week following the announcement of the establishment of the fund.
I wish to thank everyone who has responded to this effort thus far and encourage
those who have not yet done so to consider assisting us in the next few weeks.
Each family is requested to donate $150.00 to this fund.
You may place your offering in an envelope with your name on it and then put it
in the regular collection in the ensuing weeks. Again, many thanks.
God love you! Father DiMaria
Lent with Our Lady - Throughout the centuries the Rosary has been called “The Catholic’s
favorite prayer.” The rosary combines both mental and vocal prayer as we contemplate the
mysteries of salvation. Join Father DiMaria each Sunday morning during Lent for the public
recitation of the rosary beginning at 7:30 a.m. on March 9.

Bulletin Course - Bishop . . . Priest
Over the weekend we had 109 young people from our PREP and regional school, Holy Cross, receive the
Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Daniel E. Thomas, an auxiliary bishop in this
Archdiocese, administered the sacrament. As we prepared for his visit, I began to think about what it
means to have a bishop present in our midst and to have a priest serving as pastor of our dear parish, Sacred
Heart. So, as we begin this little consideration via our bulletin, allow me to go back in time to when I was
a young girl growing up in Flushing, New York. We lived about one block from a very large parish, Saint
Andrew Avellino on Northern Boulevard. Four priests were assigned to the parish and it was common to
see one of them walking up or down our street praying the Divine Office from the breviary. One day we
were told by our parents that Father would be paying a visit to our home for the annual block collection.
Well, you should have seen my brothers, sisters, and me killing ourselves to get every bit of the house
clean and ready for the visit. Of course, we were reminded about our manners and warned about our
behavior. We figured it would be a good time to scram when Father arrived. Later, when I asked about the
visit, wondering why all the fuss, my mother responded: “God has visited his people.” Now, I didn’t
know that she was quoting a scriptural passage (Luke 7:16) which refers to Jesus, the great prophet and
miracle worker. Somehow I did get a sense that the visit by a priest was a special blessing and that she
understood something I did not. Now, after many years, I think about who the priest is - especially in the
celebration of the Mass and the administration of the sacraments. This appreciation is enhanced by my
understanding of who the bishop is.
Usually our experience at the celebration of the Mass is with a priest presiding, not the bishop. But, think
about this. Behind every priest we need to see the bishop who has ordained him and sent him to a particu-
lar community to lead the Eucharistic celebration. Actually, there is really only one priest, Christ himself.
The bishops and priests represent the one and only priest, Jesus Christ. When a bishop visits a local parish
he comes, not as one who is “in charge” of a diocese, but as one who represents Christ the head, Christ the
leader, Christ the teacher. Every bishop across the world acts in the person of Christ and teaches the same
faith. Likewise, a priest is not the ordinary person who is simply put in charge of a parish. He represents
his bishop who in turn represents Christ as head of the community. All of the priests in a diocese, because
they are in communion with their bishop, are charged to teach the same faith and to celebrate the one and
only Eucharist. This is where we get the title for our seventh sacrament, Holy Orders. It comes from an
ancient tradition – a holy order – and it is this order of communion between a priest and his bishop that
ensures that a given parish liturgical celebration is not a celebration of its own invention but authentically
derived. We may see the bishop or we may see the priest as the head of the celebration, but it is Christ
who is there. Remember, however, that a priest and the bishop are still very much human beings with
weaknesses like all of us. But, this special order that they have certainly deserves our respect. And, tucked
in the back of my mind, I still like to think that when the bishop came to Sacred Heart this past weekend
God truly visited his people! Let us pray that we will grow in our appreciation for the gift of priesthood
and that many young men will answer the call to serve Christ’s Church as priest – and perhaps even
someday, as bishop. God bless you! Sister Marganne Drago, SSJ

Marion Cooper - Mercy Hospice - I was 12 years old when I became an addict. I would steal my
mother’s cigarettes or sneak cans of beer. These things don’t sound awful, just the common experiments of some teen-
agers. But, pretty soon, my behavior became habit. My life started to spiral out of control. I did things I knew I wasn’t
supposed to. I smoked marijuana. Then I started popping pills.
My addiction continued even after I had my first daughter. Then things got worse. When she was eight, I discovered crack cocaine. I loved
how it made me feel, and that was all I was concerned about. I had another daughter, but I cared more about crack. I neglected my children, my
home and myself. My family held an intervention. They saw the problem that I was blind to. They told me that I had to get help; if I didn’t,
my daughters would be taken away. The thought of losing them scared me and so I signed up for a thirty day treatment program. It didn’t help.
My problem was too big.
Five months ago I realized I needed to make a choice. I had to either say that life is not worth living and just give up, or I needed to get real
help. That was when I was led to Mercy Hospice.
I arrived at Mercy broken, sick and scared. I arrived ready to accept that it was over; to give up my family, my
children, my life. Mercy wouldn’t let me do that. They gave me the proper treatment and the power to overcome my addictions. They saved my
life. They saved my family. They gave me hope.
I thank God for leading me to Mercy Hospice. I thank Mercy for giving me a tomorrow. I thank the Catholic
Charities Appeal for supporting Mercy Hospice. I lost my family and my life. Mercy gave it all back to me. They gave me the power to take
control and realize who God wants me to be.
